Texans 1.3 Pick Derek Stingley Jr.

Maybe he misses NC?
Linebacker was a need heading into the draft, and the Patriots didn’t pick a single one. Vice president of player personnel Matt Groh expressed confidence in the linebackers on the roster, but both inside and outside linebacker are still question marks on the roster.
Meanwhile NC selected Christian Harris, LB Alabama #75. Bellichick took Houston Cougar CB Marcus Jones #85 because he passed on the #3 CB in the draft Trent McDuffie to trade back then squander those selections. Which was to your point they don’t always draft well.
I don’t think that glorified filed clerk Eliot Wolf is an adequate replacement for a real GM like Caserio…

Sauce might have faced 2-3 1st round caliber WR’s his entire career at Cincy.

Stingley faced that many in practice from his own team in 1 year….lol. not even counting who he faced within in his own conference. Hell alabama alone he saw like 5 1st round talents at WR in his career.

Not even a question Sauce will have something to prove…& maybe that manifests itself into a chip on his shoulder that makes him great…but he’s about to see the biggest step up in competition he’s ever faced & it will be consistent & relentless. Hes about to see:

Stephon Diggs X 2
Tyreke Hill X 2
Jamarr Chase
DK Metcalf
Justin Jefferson

& thats not even counting guys like Amari Cooper & Courtland Sutton who aren’t slouches either.

He wont have weeks off at a time or get weeks to prepare like he had in the AAC & like he had before the game against Williams and Bama.

Playing for the Giants.

He signed a 3 year $43M deal, this was going to be his last year. $30M was already paid out, so... he would have brought in $13M or so this season.

I wonder what he'll end up signing for.
Would he have had to be brought to Kirby in an ambulance? If not, that might have been a plus.

Khan is a minority. There are very few minorities in position to be hired as GM. Khan has good relationships with black players. Probably an acceptable hire for Watson’s camp.
Now don't you think that's just a little bit too hokey!

Well that's what it's all about
Well darn, was gonna post this, but guess I was too pokey.

This kid found some holes in Stingley games/coverage.

Interesting film review. One thing I noticed, at the 2:22 mark, the analyst says it could possibly be a hold call, but probably not because there was hand fighting. Well that "hand fighting" occurred more than 10 yds past the LOS............definitely a defensive illegal contact penalty in the NFL.

For those not familiar with the college rules, in college, the 5-yard window doesn't exist. Defenders can't initiate contact with receivers while the ball's in the air, but they can hand fight with them all the way down the field until the QB throws. This change in rules is something that some great college DBs have real problems with transitioning to in the NFL.

This is a case of over analysis, Stingley will be fine. This is something that you would have to worry more about if you had drafted Sauce. You can find bad plays for every player in this draft. See: Stingley against Smith in Stingley's freshman yr. Overall Stingley played very well against top competition as a freshman. (Very consistent)

We're all looking forward to seeing how his technique transitions to the NFL and how much his repaired lisfranc may affect him. Keep in mind that a player with a repaired lisfranc very classically may do decently (or may not) the first season back, but again classically does not fare well beyond that.............as it is a "wear down" injury. All of the answers to our questions will come in time.

The biggest reason imo they chose Stingley over Gardner:

“Finally, there was Stingley's versatility.

"I think there is a feeling that Stingley is a little more versatile," Trotter said, via Texans Wire. "If you talk to scouts around the league and whatnot, they will tell you primarily that Sauce Gardner is primarily a press corner. Derek Stingley has shown the ability to do both: to play press and play zone, and we know Lovie plays some zone with Cover 2, Cover 3."”

This makes a ton of sense to me right up until the injury history. The injury history is why I wouldn't have drafted Stingley.

So what if Sauce tears his ACL or gets significantly injured in his rookie year? Does that automatically rendered the pick riskier?

People using stingley’s injury history as a reason to not draft him where we did act like sauce or any other player with a clean bill of health coming out couldn’t be injured immediately in the NFL and thereby compromise or add significant risk to the pick.

we saw this with Clowney who had no significant injury concerns coming out, but tore his meniscus & wound up needing microfracture surgery in his rookie year & it was pretty much over for him.

Bottom line is **** happens and noone can predict whats gonna happen with these guys once they enter the NFL.

Not really. Anything strike you in this video?
There is no doubt that he is avoiding full impact and full weight on his left foot. High stepping the right leg, places full weight on the left foot. High stepping height determines impact when landing. By decreasing right high step height, there is decrease weight placed on the left foot. By decreasing left high step height, there is decreased left impact when the foot hits ground. As compared to all others participating in the drill, his compromised high step height is quite evident bilaterally.........but especially on his left. These are observations we as surgeons look for in evaluating post operative lisfranc repair status.

I think I watched it 15 times and just couldn’t see it, of course I have 0 medical background. I thought the camera angle could be causing difference looking at thighs but if I stared at feet the looked about same in distance off ground. If he is favoring foot due to pain with that simple warm up exercise then we may be in trouble.

So where is he at in the recovery process then Doc? Should he be going through that drill without worries?

We saw another player (Metchie) out there going through the motions but not yet a full go until TC. Could Stingley be in the same place?

Most players would be ready for full game play anywhere from 5-6 months post surgery. Stingley is not there at 7 months 3 weeks.

If you run a 4.37 on your first attempt at your pro day you are not running on your hands. My take is that you are pounding and stretching your foot more than dancing to Lovies music.
Not if you're running with carbon fiber insoles, which is common for runners coming back from a lisfranc.

But he ran a 4.37 40. Ok Doc
That's already over 6 months post repair. I've explained why he could run straight line like that to other posters and how it does not necessarily translate into game play. I guess I'm going to back off trying to educate about injuries, because everyone already seems to know most everything. And I'm not saying that in a sarcastic mode. No doubt, dropping out of this conversation will help relieve any potential controversy.

And his vertical too?

And his vertical too?
The vertical jump is a whole body movement with certain muscle groups playing a more important role in the overall force production. The most important muscles involved in the vertical jump are the glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves.

In addition, arm swing has been shown to increase vertical jump height as much as 25%, due to the pendulum-like inertia effect.

Understanding how an arm swing enhances performance in the vertical jump

Abstract
This investigation was conducted to examine the various theories that have been proposed to explain the enhancement of jumping performance when using an arm swing compared to when no arm swing is used. Twenty adult males were asked to perform a series of maximal vertical jumps while using an arm swing and again while holding their arms by their sides. Force, motion and electromyographical data were recorded during each performance. Participants jumped higher (0.086 m) in the arm swing compared to the no-arm swing condition and was due to increased height (28%) and velocity (72%) of the center of mass at take-off. The increased height at take-off was due to the elevation of the arm segments. The increased velocity of take-off stemmed from a complex series of events which allowed the arms to build up energy early in the jump and transfer it to the rest of the body during the later stages of the jump. This energy came from the shoulder and elbow joints as well as from extra work done at the hip. This energy was used to (i) increase the kinetic and potential energy of the arms at take-off, (ii) store and release energy from the muscles and tendons around the ankle, knee and hip joint, and (iii) ‘pull’ on the body through an upward force acting on the trunk at the shoulder. It was concluded that none of the prevailing theories exclusively explains the enhanced performance in the arm swing jump, but rather the enhanced performance is based on several mechanisms operating together.

The feet do little more in the vertical jump than add a stable base (which in a case such as we are discussing is re-inforced by a stiff carbon fiber insole).

so what was he wearing while high stepping in the video? Would they have made a difference?
It could have cushioned the repeated trauma impacting the ground. But there is a significant percentage of post lisfranc repairs that remain tender and painful for months, years and permanent, which the inserts could only partially mask.

Wearing these rigid carbon fiber insoles would not lend itself well to cutting, changing direction, "playing on your toes" to following WRs as they try evasive sudden moves by changing speed and direction.

I can see he was not high stepping to 100% of his range, maybe 95%. I know you're basing this on your experience in evaluating this motion countless times, so yeah I'm concerned now. Eager to see if this changes in three months.

It could indeed change......and we are all hopeful that change is for the better rather than for the worse. But, for now, it's honestly much less than 95%. In this evaluation (and in comparison to the other players), don't try to look look at how high the feet come off the ground, look at how high the knees comes up in relationship to the hips, especially on the left. That is what previews foot take-off stress and impact.

The high step drill is meant as a warm up explosive drill. The purpose/understanding of the drill is actually better illustrated by this next stage high step drill using a low box [1-minute video].

I guess I’m just trying to understand all this. In his pro day he beat the target figures in the vertical jump and three cone drill. Are these less strenuous than hi stepping? Did he regress from his pro day? could Mo Town just have moved him in a different way? Does his type of injury absolutely require him to feel no pain without subjecting him to further discomfort? What is your gut feeling where he is at right now?

It's amazing how much videos can tell you if you know what you are looking for.
i mean….ok…but who didnt expect him to still be on the mend? ….B..this is probably the 1st time since his surgery that he’s really about to get out there and put some high impact weight on his foot…expect the dude to be cautious in what hes doing…similar ti a guy who tears his ACL and is learning to trust his knee again….IOW’s it could be all mental.
