No he wasn’t a finalist but like I said Cal made that wise decision because the other candidates wanted to pick their own staff. And Nick was taking too long to make a decision.Lovie wasn't a finalist
No he didn't. At least I never seen or heard this
Then I would expect him to be in Houston as the QB coach. After three interviews he had to be interested in what the Texans were offering.
Since he is not, I'm pretty sure that's not the job he was onterviewing for
Lovie Smith, Texans HC < Gary Kubiak, Texans HC 2006 - 2010Depends on your expectations. I've learned to lower mine.

You don't have to welcome me back. When the time comes, we will welcome you back with open arms.
This is the only point I'm making. Cal decided to do what he hired Nick to do.No he wasn’t a finalist but like I said Cal made that wise decision because the other candidates wanted to pick their own staff. And Nick was taking too long to make a decision.
Right. He's not going to be a coach if he can't be HC, which is a serious character flaw imo & speaks poorly of whoever wanted to make him the HCMcCown said he wasn’t taken any other coaching position.
This is the only point I'm making. Cal decided to do what he hired Nick to do.
For whatever reason.
Right. He's not going to be a coach if he can't be HC, which is a serious character flaw imo & speaks poorly of whoever wanted to make him the HC
& before you go after some rabbit hole, Pep is the OC, McCown is not the QB coach
I'm not the only one. Many do not believe the Texans will win a championship with the McNairs meddling the way they have from day 1. David Carr, which plagued two coaching regimes. Schaub/Keenum, Clowney, Hopkins, and a bunch of others we don't know about.Thunder the Texan was not trying to make him the Head Coach.
The owner makes the final decision correct?
Look here I just bumped up a level. My coordinator approved it but it had to go to the head boss for final approval. Brother there’s a thing called chain of command. Cal and Mama McNair has to signed off on any hire. The problem was they wanted to keep both Lovie and Pep. Therefore, no GM would be able to come in here and convince them to do any other way is my main point.
Agree, but that saw cuts both ways. You say Nick and Lovie are the best combo since the team’s inception. What??? I mean technically I guess that bar isn’t very high so it’s possible, but what have either done to make anyone make a comment like that? And give me something better than Lovie taking a team to the SB SIXTEEN years ago.
This guy was the DC here last year and that defense was one of the worst in football. BTW, he’s the DC here again this year, but now he has other things on his plate because he’s HC too.
Then there’s Caserio and the misconception that he had a good draft last year. There’s still a chance that Mills could trump it all, but other than that, he traded up for a WR who didn’t play ball the year before and I think it showed last year when Nico had one of the worst catch rates in football. Then there was the obligatory TE who didn’t even dress for the 1st 7 weeks. Then trading up twice to get a LB who barely saw the field with a group who wasn’t all that. That was a good draft?
And not to mention the 2 HC search disasters already under his belt. Lovie wasn’t even in the running until that got screwed up six ways to Sunday.
I think we’re so caught up with things being sooooo bad with O’Brien that anything else looks like the greatest thing ever, but come on. Let’s at least have these guys accomplish something first before anointing them best in franchise history.
Same style and recipe, hire friends, family and buddies as your coaches and turn the draft into a backyard BBQ letting friends, family and buddies draft the players they fell in love with.A different kind of mediocrity.
Thunder every owner meddles. It’s their business. Why are y’all so worried about them being a owner. Y’all keep saying meddling, man that’s the wrong term.I'm not the only one. Schaub/Keenum, Clowney, Hopkins, and a bunch of others we don't know about.
It's been a hope that the McNairs would bring in someone they could leave the football operations to while they do what they are good at. An Ozzie Newsome, a Jimmy Johnson, a Bill Belichick.
I thought you were in that group. I guess I was wrong. For those of us who are in that group I'm saying, the McNairs haven't found that guy yet.
Whatever good Caserio might be able to do he's going to be blind sided by the McNairs & we'll be here again. Top 3 draft pick 3 years in a row
& every owner backs off when they find someone they believe in.Thunder every owner meddles. It’s their business. Why are y’all so worried about them being a owner. Y’all keep saying meddling, man that’s the wrong term.
You’re being a little to be extreme over the semantics. Every business owner will have a say into their day to day operations and above.
No they do not . They still voices their concerns in those day to day meetings. Prime example Jerry Jones always meddling. It’s his team and everyone knows he’s going to be heavily involved. The main reason why you don’t hear anything is because they’re probably winning a lot of games. But let them start losing, every last one of them will get involved.& every owner backs off when they find someone they believe in.
Cal made a good call, this time. If he can be that guy making sound football decisions that would be ideal
Fine. You win. We're doomed until the McNairs sell the teamNo they do not . They still voices their concerns in those day to day meetings. Prime example Jerry Jones always meddling. We shall see. And it’s not about me or you winning.Fine. You win. We're doomed until the McNairs sell the team
And who gives a buck if he was considered or not. The report was Cal was talking to him all along. I know one thing he was a better option than the candidates we interviewed. So it was the offense that made them have the 5th fewest sacks, 3rd fewest pressures, 3rd fewest QB hits, 4th most air yards allowed, have the 5th worst yards per carry against, 3rd most yards per play and 6th worst percentage of drives ending in scores? I get that some yardage totals can start climbing when you're on the field a lot, but when the percentages are just as bad, that's not a good thing.
The defense was bad because the offense was bad. Yeah, whatever. They were both bad. It was a bad team, period.
Again, it's about proving it to me. I don't give a flying **** what Lovie did in Chicago so long ago. That means nothing. But he went to the playoffs just once in 8 seasons after that SB run if anybody wants to go there. Hell, O'Brien has been to as many playoff games as Lovie has.
Yes, Lovie and Caserio have both come into a situation where this thing has to be built from the ground up. That's going to take some time, and to me, that clock doesn't start ticking until this year. Last year Caserio was basically in salvage mode.
They just had a full draft with some high picks that they need to hit on to get this thing moving forward. Hopefully that happens, but there's still a long way to go and a lot of questions that have to be answered, with one being is Lovie the guy? I'm not going to just trust everybody all of a sudden because he's the HC now, who BTW, wasn't even being considered until the Texans backed themselves into a corner.
& every owner backs off when they find someone they believe in.

And we likely won't see the best of Lovie and this team until we get another off-season after this one including a draft and FA period, and then a full season after that under their belts. And who gives a buck if he was considered or not. The report was Cal was talking to him along. I know one thing he was a better option than the candidates we interviewed.
I watched a little bit of the 1st Titans game, & the Colts with Tyrod. Then I watched the 1st half of the Seahawks game. And we likely won't see the best of Lovie and this team until we get another off-season after this one including a draft and FA period, and then a full season after that under their belts.
That is if we want a truer idea of the strength of this team and it's heirarchy.
Ummm no, a saw only cuts in one direction.Agree, but that saw cuts both ways.
Ummm this is because Cal has seen enough to know he created a real circus and has hired a clown to sit on his right and a joker to sit on his left. Cal was stuck in the middle. Cal has seen enough over the last 15 months and told his clown his new job description is to do for the new head coach, Lovie Smith, exactly what he did for Bill Belichick in NE. And Cal told his Joker that Lovie Smith would now take on the duties of Executive Vice President of Football Operations, but he, the Joker could stay on to minister and counsel with the players, staff, and employees on an as-needed basis only. Cal and Hannah were well pleased with the Clown and his performance in his new job assignments. Cal is not really going for winning here, he's trying for respectability. Winning would be a bonus.Yep, not letting your GM make final calls on personnel/HC's etc...
Ever heard of a cross cut saw?Ummm no, a saw only cuts in one direction.
With Pierce and Burkhead sharing the reps, I can see our run game becoming a weapon to be reckoned with.I watched a little bit of the 1st Titans game, & the Colts with Tyrod. Then I watched the 1st half of the Seahawks game.
The Texans were pretty competitive in those games.
A run game would definitely help.
I'm not saying the Texans are going to win 10 games but most of the teams we'll face won't be much better than those three teams were last season.
I think 4.5 is way to low.
I believe Mack will be the starting running back. I’m predicting a bounce back year from that injury. With Pierce and Burkhead sharing the reps, I can see our run game becoming a weapon to be reckoned with.
Christ I'll be glad when preseason starts so we'll have something real to argue over.![]()
Dude, I completely forgot about Mack!I believe Mack will be the starting running back. I’m predicting a bounce back year from that injury.

Burkhead was too slow to the hole. He’s a tough runner though & got some tough yards. He doesn’t have the build, but if he’s going to have a role on this team it will be those short yardage, goal line situations.I believe Mack will be the starting running back. Mack… can’t imagine.
Ogunbowale is going to have to be an amazing Cinderella story, or we need to get someone else in here
No, not really. Those smart enough recognize that it was a takeoff and having a little fun with the song "Stuck in Middle With You", by Stealers Wheel. The Clowns and Jokers would not. What?
This is some of the best fictional writing I have seen in a long time.
Nah, he was being interviewed for the head coaching job.Again that’s what the media stirred up . From what I heard McCown was not being interviewed for the HC position. I believe Nick said that in one of his interviews. The problem was they took too long to make a decision. Mainly because a few of the top candidates were defensive type coaches and they did not want to keep Lovie on staff. They also didn’t want to keep Pep either.
Yes but you didn't say crosscut, you said saw.Ever heard of a cross cut saw?

I’m going off of what Nick Caserio said in one of his interviews.Nah, he was being interviewed for the head coaching job.
Good argumentIt's pretty simple. Cal hired Caserio to make football decisions.
When the Flores situation was blowing up in their faces, Cal stepped in and made a business decision.
The type of decision Caserio was never hired to make.
At some point, when lawsuits start to become a threat to your business, it's appropriate to take the decision out of your subordinates hands and make the best decision for your business.
Then we need to get more RBs in hereBurkhead will also handle 3rd downs.
Ogun will be a ace ST's guy,
Then we need to get more RBs in here
Semantics.Yes but you didn't say crosscut, you said saw.
Yes but you didn't say crosscut, you said saw.
Well, most saws only cut in one direction. It was an erroneous comment. It's called a Commitment to Excellence. Something the Texans, the Clown, the Joker, and the Kool-Aid Brigade are not familiar with. The quest for being right has come to this?
SMDH
Mods, can we start an Stupid Arguments About Hand Tools section and move the saw discussion there please?
I mean, I'm all for a spirited hand tool discussion, but they get me so fired up that I lose track of my thoughts on football

Instead of the quest for being right, maybe the right thing to do is for one to man up and admit that you got this one wrong. The quest for being right has come to this?
