How to fix Texans run game?

OptimisticTexan

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
So we've all got Deculus pretty much playing a position he hasn't played? Great.
Not so quick. After giving this some thought, this would my lineup:

LT- Tunsil
LG- Howard
OC- Britt
RG- Green
RT- Deculus

Howard stays on the left side with Tunsil. Some are going to say that starting 2 rookies on the right would be suicide, but it’s not suicide if they earn the opportunity to start. Maybe they make bringing Pierce and Mack to the right a good option.

I was, before retiring, in engineering. I prefer things to be quantifiable. I am assuming PFF does have a quantifiable system of analysis.
It's a set of numbers hiding that it's a beauty pageant behind the scenes. They make it look as though they've done quantifiable analysis, but what they're really doing is having some guys watch some games and give a subjective grade to the players based off whether they thought the player was doing what he should have been doing and if he was doing a good job at it. Then they grade them with numbers and dress the numbers up to make it look like it's objective and scientific, but ultimately, it's a subjective beauty contest.

I'll grant you it's not going to be "quantifiable" from an engineering perspective. But I doubt it will be "subjective", without any standards, as you imply. There will be observable metrics and there will be, as much as possible, consistancy.

Nice!!
That’s very intriguing and a real possibility.

Why are we putting Cann at LG when he's played RG for most of his career, and Green at RG when he's mostly played LG?
Agree. Let these guys adjust to the NFL in their familiar, customary positions before you start mixing and matching.
Solidify one side of the line with your big boys and send your best blocking TEs to the weak side for support.

You’re not just starting two rookies you are also moving Howard to a position he’s never played and will have to learn from scratch.

Didn’t Howard pull LG duty on multiple occasions last season?
Just looked it up and we’re both wrong, last season he played 10 games at RG then shifted to LT after Taylor came back from injury to be guard again and Tunsil went out on injury. Howard only played LG for one game.

As with always on our line they need stop playing musical chairs and just let guys get comfortable in their role. I get injuries happen but good Lord I can’t keep up with who has played what any more.

Here’s the first game of the year.

I heard a presser where Nick said he liked the RB room, which caused me to scratch my head. However, upon further review, after drafting Pierce, singing some free agents and releasing Scottie Philips I'm almost OK with the current RB room. From what I can tell our current (at time of post) RB room is as follows:

Rex Burkhead - current age 31 (32 before season)
Dameon Pierce - 22
Marlon Mack - 26
Darious Anderson - 24
Dare Ogunbawale - 27
Royce Freeman - 26

I think we have improved the competition at RB a great deal. With the addition of drafting OL Green, extending Howard and signing Cann we should have a much better running game. Not to mention a real OC.

They should only keep 4 rb vs something dumb like last year with 6 duds

Under NRG
Better OL, better blocking TEs and WRs, a fullback can help and a good RB. According to the draft, we are only missing a FB. But, one UDFA RB is the size of a FB...

As the song sort of said " you put your left guard in then you take him out.
Then you put him in the Right Guard spot. You take him out then you shake him all about! That's what it's all about!"

Yessir .... in our case, we bring these miseries on ourselves. The art of team building is predicated on the notion that you are able to employ intelligence along with your talent evaluations !

Yep, of the TE"can block better than Pharaoh did last yr without getting penalties the run game should be much improved.

How many years did they sign Cann for?

I think the better question is .... how much better is Cann than it would appear .... being as how he wasn't valuable to a previous team. Of course we'll probably be okay .... what with roster cuts just around the corner .... having to sit on hands again !!

Cann is a Warhop guy.

I'm Ok with this. But if he doesn't perform up to expectations then it will be time to move on quickly next draft.

I would guess cutting the worst players from the current roster and adding those that suit your scheme better is making the team better.
If they can get fixing this Oline right, our O should be much improved - especially the run game.
Fingers and toes crossed!

Right.

Bringing Cann in is just like Lovie bringing “his guys” in. Just like Pep bringing “his guy” in.

When Warhop says, “I want you to blah, blah, blah.” They can look at Cann to know what he means.

Of those, Burkhead and Freeman each would have greater than $1M in dead money if cut and Pierce should be a given to be on the squad. The rest could very well not make it out of camp although I'm pulling for Mack.

I think Cann was valuable to Jags. He injured his MCL Oct 4th 2021 and went on IR then missed that season. From SI
Following left guard Andrew Norwell having his best season as a Jaguar and right guard A.J. Cann having a career year in 2020, the Jaguars' guard duo has earned its fair share of fans.
