Nick Caserio - New GM

Moving from 13 to 15 brought us excellent value. That brought my grade of round 1 up from a D to a C.
I was a little more generous. That said, I'm not as optimistic about the rest of this draft as I was before the first round concluded.

What about not taking the trade back with Pittsburgh at #20 that would have added a 2nd RD #52? Did that do anything for you?

That would have more value, but would we have missed out on Green? We moved back, still got our man and added 3 picks - works for me.
NC stated he was concerned about the five players that would come off the board by pick 20. Obviously there was a player or players he wanted and assumed they would be gone. He drew his line at 15 after a good trade. trying to be too cute with trades is like holding a stock too long trying to get that last dollar. Texans wanted that spot just as bad as those wanting to trade for it.

Agree. We can split hairs all day on how somebody should been taken higher/lower but until we see how they perform after at least one full season in the NFL, it's all just nit picking.
I like that Green is a local boy with his family here - his adjustment period just had a big chunk lopped off of it.

Nit picking is what you do on the day of the draft. It's six months later that you begin to worry about people going back and reading your posts. LOL

LOL… with all those “not who I would have picked” posts of yours, I can see why you’re nervous.:D

I think Caserio proved his talent in working the draft. Getting the players the coach wants and most importantly not giving up the farm to do it. Rick Smith was not good at that. Sad that’s the best we got to compare to. Comparing the other 3 GMs aren’t weren’t mentioning.

I think if Caserio wasn’t drafting out of desperation to fill so many holes at once he could really work the draft that much better.

I would like to see how many picks we had prior to the trade with NewEngland to move up, then how many we added and traded away. Then how many picks we netted out. It would be interesting to know.

That may change things.

Poor Gaine, I don’t think he made a single trade as GM for two drafts.

Lovie is happy because his Admin was able to do everything he needed him to do to get Lovie and his coaches thru the draft. Now Lovie's draft operation and the plan is a discussion for another day.
Call him what you want and speculate as you wish. As long as they win together nothing else matters.

Having a GM fulfill the requests of the coach is hard to get. I think that is what we are seeing.

Based on Caserio's late Thurs night press conference I agree, that's exactly what we are seeing. The fact that Lovie and coaches were still debating and discussing who to take right up until the #3 pick is somewhat troubling for me. And Caserio's comments that if they (the coaches) had decided to go in another direction it wouldn't have bothered Lovie and he would have been fine with it if they had, does bother me. This indicates to me that Lovie really did not have a plan and this draft was not that well orchestrated or planned out.

I commented earlier that the Texans draft room sounded more like a backyard BBQ and Nick was the waiter. I was also troubled to see Easterby's bald head at the draft table. I have always said Nick has done a good job as an administrator. That's what he did for Belichick. He's just not prepared or very well educated in how to be a good GM and it shows. This is not a condemnation of Nick Caserio. For me this is sounding the alarm on Lovie's leadership. It looks like we are getting the Tampa Bay and Illinois Lovie Smith.

This draft reminded me a lot of a Richard Smith drafting Amobi Okoye or Frank Bush drafting Brian Cushing or Kareem Jackson. I see the same movie playing in my head. Lovie sitting at the head of draft table passing out draft picks to his assistant coaches. Some of those assistant coaches were able to go to local (Texas area) Pro Days and the Texans Draft looks like players they fell in love with. Much like when Kubiak went to the Texas Bowl and fell in love with Jacoby Jones.

Yet somehow they added much needed speed to the back 7 and the best OG inthe draft. Plus a bunch of guys that run 4.4 or better that are from proven schools. I count 6 players that I think will be starting and playing well by the middle of next yr.

With this said plus the post I made in Stingley thread concerning Thibodeaux being told he was the pick, seems like a bit of indecision.. or perhaps Texans knew several players available and perhaps no adequate trade down offers someone just said "go with Stingley as LSU fans travel well."

Where was there necessarily indecision though?

The Thibodaux story could've just as well have been them trying to manufacture a small move down to gain more assets while still taking the guy - Stingley - they wanted all along.

If you listen to Stingley he was extensively recruited by Lovie. I think he mentioned at least three interviews where they talked football and how Lovie wanted to use him. I think that pick was made weeks ago.

This draft is at the moment a B+ have to wait until we see Stingley moving around to see if he is 100% but that WR took it from A to high B Metchie...just not a fan. Got a steal and then some in Pitre. This kid is going to be very good

Agreed about Stingley, I think you're underrating Metchie, he will be the best slot this team has ever had. (. If healthy)

It says alot that in the RZ/3rd downs that Young's preferred choice was Metchie over Williams. Metchie pre ACL had some great quickness off of the line he was almost impossible to jam and he was also very quick in and out of his breaks.
