2022 dead money

This blew me away; Texans 2022 salary cap: Houston will owe dead money to 11 players (usatoday.com)

I can understand some of them are debt from bad contracts of the previous regime, but many of these are on Caserio - Ingram, Roby, Lawson, Cobb.

All of these will be off of the books by 2023.

So 2 draft classes from now talent will be added through the draft and there should be plenty of cap room to work with. This is a long rebuild, I expect the team to suck next yr as well. But things should start getting better by 2023 and hopefully true contenders by 2024.

Vandermeer and the rest of the team at Texans All Access will be working overtime to sell this team to the fans until 2024!

The cap doesn't look good now. Anyone making a big deal about it now are trying to rile you up.

Cap will go up. We'll still be in a bad situation. But we expected as much. 2021 & 2022 were going to be bad.

Just like we know the team is going to be bad. In fact, one of the reasons we know the team will be bad, is because we know the cap situation is going to be bad.

Granted Caserio didn't do it the way any of us would have liked. But the reality is the same.

Unfortunately, I'm losing faith that he's the guy. Too many gambles (so far) he came out on the wrong side.

True,

What gambles has Caserio taken that have set this franchise back? Trading a 5th for Anthony Miller is a big setback? LMAO

yep Obrien is like an ex-wife and those situations often leave negatives. Bills show up and expected or not sometimes are devastating but what you gonna do? No Ghosts Busters in the NFL; gotta take your lumps, spit out a tooth and some blood and move on. I guess you can moan and groan to your buddies and call her names but does that change anything?

Perhaps the mother in law (Easterby) played a part? Same thing applies accept the MIL still living in the apartment over the garage. Hopefully nothing more comes from that quarter but we just have to see.

$35 million in 2022 but as of now.. only Cooks two voided years of 2.5 million each for 2023. I do not see any significant free agents for this off season or any extensions we cannot handle.. so.. yeah if it continues we have a problem.

I didn't say they set the Texans back, only he lost on them.

Cannon & Britt were injured, not injury proned, but they got injured again. Took forever to get Lane Taylor on the field... was that injury as well?

Very minor gambles.

Actually the type of gambles that need to be taken at this point.

But he's got to get something right.

I don't expect him to be 100% but... which ones did he get right?

Offensively none of the vets he brought in, including Tyrod "worked"

I guess it depends on your expectations. I expected Caserio to add 3-4 pieces through fa this off-season and another 3-4 through the draft. Mission accomplished.

As far as adding to the offense, he tried.

Taylor is starting and technically Burkhead is also starting.

Cannon and Amendola would be starting if they weren't hurt. So it's not as bad as it seems.

Injury was part of the gamble with those two

So you really haven't lost anything.

Unless you actually excited to have a winning team this year.

I'm glad that, if they're going to be bad, that they're going to be real bad. It helps the rebuild.

This doesn't mean I want a total tank at this point in the season.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/2022/

Texans currently sit 13th in projected cap space going into 2022 free agency.

Despite having a ton of dead money, they will have the space to resign players they like from this years roster, churn some more value pickups as they hope to build a core team, and, crucially, take on Watson’s dead space also.

If they nail this draft and get another3 or 4 good cheap FA’s, they will be looking much improved heading towards 2023 and the rebuild will be on track.

Alot of the rebuild will be about whether Mills is the future at QB.

He's looking very good today.

Interesting. But, the Texans only have 20 some players under contract for 2022, so I’m not sure how good/bad the cap situation is.

to be clear, I want the Texans to be able to have a full roster & $20M+ in cap space to roll over with Watson’s $35M (if he goes on CEL), that we can then roll over to 2024 & spend.

I thought Tyrod looked fairly good before he got injured. Of coarse all I have been able to watch were the first couple of games but based on all I have read here and seen in stats he regressed quite a bit. I wonder why?

I’m losing confidence that our GM can asses talent, the medicals involved, and properly acting on that information.

Injuries have alot to do with luck.

There was no way to know that Cannon was going to suffer his injury.

A 5th isn't a bad gamble on a talented guy like Miller with his injury history. If you hit you've gota starting level NFL slot. If you miss you lost a 5th.

strange definition of talented - Chicago was going to cut him if they couldn't trade him and Texans cut him.

Did he start for the Bears last season?

Usually talented guys are starting for playoff teams in the NFL. His shoulder injury history is why he was cut from the Bears. Caserio took a very small risk and lost. Very simple

Jags know how to tank much better than Texans. Jags get Thibideaux or Hutchinson and the Texans get to do that hand thing.

The Texans, whether they're picking 1st/2nd (Hutchinson/Thibodeaux) or 4th/5th (Stingley/Neal/Hamilton) will get a very talented player in this yrs draft. I'm more interested in what they do at 2-34and 3-66 if they cant trade down.

Settling for 3rd, 4th or 5th best is a void in the commitment to excellence.

Jags suck more than Texans.

That’s a good thing last time I checked.

Are there posters that will seriously find anything wrong with the Texans even when they win?

All I know is if you have a college coach who is a “proven winner” and a “generational talent” at QB and you still in the running for 1st in last place then you are doing something wrong.

Edit - there not their. SMH.

We're dogs in this game.

Been so far & few between I honestly don't remember.

Meyer’s job may depend on beating the Texans.

It’s one thing to have problems when you don’t have any talent.

It’s another thing to have talent and be the reason for your problems.

Jags are more dysfunctional than Texans.

That’s a good thing.

I think they beat the Jags.
I regret to admit it, but I'm also concerned the Texans win this upcoming game Sunday.
As I understand it right now the Jags have the #2 pick, and we have the #3, but if the Jags win/we lose Sunday we go to the #2 overall and
if we win we remain @ #3 after this weekends games?

Texans were dogs at home in the 1st game.

A win again against the Jags pretty much ensures the Texans won't be picking in the top 2. They'd have the tiebreaker edge against J-ville which basically gives them a 2 game lead with 3 to go. Detroit plays Arizona this week. A loss by them gives the Texans a game and a half lead over them with 3 left.

I thought coming into the season they'd compete for a top 5 pick, so win or lose, they're right where I had them pegged.

And without a very good QB class, it should come down to the Texans picking someone who can be a top end starter for them through at least a 2nd contract, whether that's an o-lineman, d-lineman/pass rusher, secondary, whatever. In that case, it doesn't really matter what position they're in, IMO, except of course for those who will shit on them for not drafting their guy.

What talent? Looks more like a bunch of mistakes.

Meyer is an accomplished college coach.

The Sarah Jessica Parker look-a-like was supposed to be a generational talent. Better than Watson.

Their RB had a breakout year last year.

Together all of it looks like mistakes.

Biggest mistake - getting rid of Minshew.

Are you saying Meyer and the Jags are tanking?
There's a difference between teams tanking and teams who are just routinely bad. How many times have the Jags had a top 5 draft pick the last decade? 5 is the answer. 8 times in the top 10. They don't tank all of those years, they're just a poorly run organization.

I believe the Texans are tanking because they legitimately have a plan to be good again soon. They're not necessarily tanking to get the #1 pick to get a certain player, but to be low enough to get an impact player, or maybe to use that position to trade back and get more picks, which is what they really need to do, to help that plan come to fruition. But if it comes to a point where the Texans are routinely in the top 5, top 10, then it goes beyond something worse than tanking. And that something worse is a poorly run organization and becoming the Jags, Lions, or Browns of the last 2 decades.

It's getting close.

OB inherited a no. 1 pick.
They traded away a 1st round pick in 2017 and ended the season at 4-12.
That one resulted in the no. 3 pick, I think.
Then last year 4-12 resulted in another high 1st rd pick that they had traded away for Tunsil.
Now, this season.

Who knows what next season may bring with Culley still at HC.

It’s not getting close, it’s not even in view of close. We had two, three is you count this tank one, what could be considered bad seasons. Yeah we sucked in the playoffs last 6 years but at least we made them. Believe me even making the playoffs what be a major improvement for lions or jags or jets so stop acting like we have had near the bad history they have.

We were bad last year because the chickens came home to roost, we fired the HC and the fill in was just collecting a paycheck. Name me any team that fires a HC in season and goes on to have a good season. Then the whole thing with Watson comes out and we are really in uncharted waters for how to deal with that.

So yeah it sucks right now and who knows it may continue to suck and Caserio may make a bad situation worse, but we are still not as bad off as some other teams. We have a couple of bad years and some people are ready to write the team off while fans of the Lions, Browns, Jets and Bengals to name a few go decades with no hope in sight.
