This is just a bad team, from the owner to the coaching staff to the roster. It may be the worst Houston football team in my memory. There were a couple of bad Oilers teams in the early '80's after Luv Ya Blue, iirc, but I was too busy chasing girls to pay any attention to a bad football team back then.

Yeah. The Bush-Bowl was textbook tanking. This team is just awful.

Not sure if it's the coaches, players or FO. But this team has maybe 4-5 players total who are legit quality starters. And then a few "ok" backup players and the rest are just awful
Is there anything in particular you think Cal should do right now, or in the near future?

Other than sell, not really sure what it is he can do. Get someone trustworthy to advise him? Isn't that what he's got the Pastor for? He's clearly in over his head, and appears to be tone deaf on top of that. I mean, if a 71,000 seat stadium with 25,000 actual people in the building, with a good portion of those being opposing fans, doesn't clue him in, then I don't know what will.
That's basically why I'm asking what you think he should do now or in the near future.
I'm sure he notices the empty seats. Are you expecting a press conference?
Hire Caserio, get out of the way. About all he can do.

You cannot fix poor leadership. Cal as a person is the persona of ineptness. Just completely clueless and uninspiring. So when he makes hiring decisions you get people that relate to his persona. Completely inept and lacking leadership quality. This team has zero future the way it is currently constructed. This is the first time in my life I have consistently turned off the game before it was over and it's been in the 1st quarter the past few weeks. Not only do we suck, but we have nothing to look forward to. It's as bad as it gets.
So in other words you dont know?
My question is Cal had to cut ties with Derrick, so what were/are your expectations of a full rebuild and why dont you trust that Caserio would be the man to get the job done?
If say, Will McClay was the GM would you feel better about the future?

Usually when my wife thinks the same thing I am she grows very concerned.
I say she should be, it means she is that much closer to greatness. That's a huge responsibility.

The crumbling of this organization began the moment OB was given the GM job. Next, the foolish and ducked up trade of Hopkins and trade for Tunsil. Of course....Watson delivered the final blow with his legal situation. Worse than that, the team giving him the extension they did while knowing more about Watson's legal situation than letting on. Also, the McNair's inability to understand the importance of clearing the table "completely" when making key changes in the organization. Kubiak was fired but Smith was kept then OB was fired while Kelly was retained....just pure ignorance at the highest level.
Do you have some facts,quotes,links etc. to base this statement on?

Apparently, he's done that and that is how Kelly and Culley have turned the offense into the worst offense in the league. Or is that what is really happening? I may be wrong, but it looks like Cal elevated a HC that wanted to be a GM to GM/HC, fired that guy, then hired a GM that wants to be a head coach.
Whether it is as it seems, Culley is incompetent of running the team, or he's being undercut by Caserio (and maybe Easterby, too), it all goes back to Cal McNair. Cal could at any time bring in a reputable consultant, there are plenty available, or he can continue on this path.
We've already discussed why Kelly was kept on. (Trying to appease Derrick)
Culley is a placeholder while the rebuild begins. A 65 yr old HC wasn't hired to be a long term answer.

That's a great idea but, Cal has to be involved somehow. Like the draft, because it is like he wants to play with the new toy. I think Nick Caserio could build a winning team and hire a good HC. Yet I can't see Cal letting him alone to do it

Get Cal a pirated 2022 Madden and let him know that due to C-19....the NFL Draft will be held via Madden. Get him a beanbag, some fresh energy drinks, and twinkie"s and tell him to do a good job....the organization is counting on you, Big Fella.
Appeasing Watson ended in January 2021 when they knew beyond a doubt that he'd never play for the Texans again.
We've seen multiple teams fire staff mid-season. There is absolutely no valid reason to keep an O'Brien relic on the roster at this point when the results are literally the worse offense in the NFL. They've already got another OC on the roster in Hamilton.
It's clearly incompetence and stupidity on Kirby Drive.
And this is the first time in 45 years that I've every heard a fan base so docile about a franchise with a dismal future using the term "placeholder" for a crappy head coach. Seriously, I've never heard the term in that context before, but admittedly, I've never followed terrible franchises as closely as I do this one. So maybe it's normal for bad franchises to hire "placeholder" head coaches.

I don't want Cal to sell the team. I know that as long as Cal is the owner, Houston will have a team. If Cal sells the team, there is no guarantee that the team will stay in Houston. I don't want to go through again what we went through when Butt Adams moved the team to Tennessee. If Houston loses another team, it might be forever and a day before another one comes. I guess Houston could look forward to the XFL coming back.
I don't think there's any real chance of this NFL franchise leaving the city of Houston as the Oilers did a quarter of a century ago,
no matter if ownership remains the same or changes even if new ownership resided outside of Texas.
IMO what's far more likely is for the state to add a third NFL franchise. At the rate this state is growing we might end of with
an entire NFL division in Texas.

Cal may be concerned, but is he smart enough to do anything about it? And if he does, will it be a good thing or a bad thing?
Personally, I don't trust the Texans organization to do anything right. The Texans history under Cal is horrific and laughable at the same time.

I can't remember since 1978 not being interested in watching the Oiler/Texans either on TV or going to the game on Sundays. It's all so F'ed up I just don't even give a **** anymore. No interest what so ever. I'll check in here once in awhile, but ever since old man McNair passed the ownership is garbage. Every time Jr. opens his mouth...he just sounds clueless. And this HC, he may be a nice guy but he has no business leading a NFL football team. I don't think at this point we could find a top-tier HC that would want to come here, and that goes for Draft picks and F.A.s. as well. I'd rather go to the Lions.

The TV money comes from the networks. All teams get the same share. Teams could never charge for tickets and still comfortably make millions. Now, charging for tickets, concessions, merchandise, etc, that’s extra for teams and is not distributed equally among them. That goes for stadium advertising as well.
And thanks to the PSL scam, it doesn’t matter that there’s only 25,000 people at games. 65,000 tickets are still sold. And I doubt the concessions hit with only 25,000 in the building is noticeable.
It’s going to take the advertisers pulling out before any real concern is had.

It's stupid, imo, to be complaining about Cal because of what happened Sunday.
He did what he was supposed to do already. Fired the HC, fired the GM. Brought in a new HC and brought in a new GM. Did he pick the wrong HC? Nope. GM hired the HC. Did he hire the wrong GM? It's too early to completely judge his first draft. Too early to tell if Culley is a bad HC. It's too early for Cal to fire his new GM.
Oh, Kyle still has Easterby here.
And personally, Caserio wouldn't be my first choice for GM.
Reasons:
- It's unclear how much say he had in the draft.
- In the years since Floyd Reese left, the Pats' draft record has been subpar.
- FAs almost always took less to come to Foxboro, and they came because of Brady and Belichik, not Caserio.
The old man sucked as an owner even more than his son because he chose corporate profiteering over on field product and he made this conscience decison. His son is just Cletus from Smokey and the Bandit. I'm hoping son is unlike father in that he lets the people hire to run the football opps do their jobs without interference from ownership.

If/when Caserio turns out to be a brilliant GM the complaints towards Cal will diminish, and probably evaporate entirely if they make it to the SB in two or three years from now. But for now, he owns this. Well, of course he owns this. This is his team.
I don't think it's stupid at all to criticize Cal for the horrid product on the field. It's his business, it's his product and his product stinks.

There is no difference between Cal and his old man other than his old man knew how to spin his actions to the media better is all.
I don't have a problem for criticizing Cal. I said it's stupid to blame Cal today for what happened Sunday. Everything Cal could/should do was done. He's not/should not going to do anything until the offseason, the way it should be.
Which has nothing to do with adding another NFL team... Jones has the power where it counts... with the other owners

Duck Jerrah!!! If a prospective NFL franchise or franchisee has their eyes on the San Antonio/Austin area, then it's the NFL owners that vote....not Jerrah making a final decision.
If Jerrah doesn't like it he can sale his Cowboys to someone who'll be an owner and not the Owner/GM/Scouting Director b/c lord knows he hasn't done shite since JJ was shown the door.
