Thanks for your support!

Who's worth keeping on a multi-year deal on this Texans roster?

Is there anyone you want to re-up? For how long? Is there anyone that may be here when the Texans are ready to compete?

I would consider re-upping Heck/Tunsil/ Maybe Cooks/Collins/Jordan/Auclair in 2024.

KGH/Greenard/Lopez/Thomas/Blacklock/Smith/ Depeding on the cost Martin on defense.

Blacklock, Lopez, Greenard, KGH, & Kirksey should be the defensive core. Draft play makers around them the defense should be very competitive.

Offensively I don’t see anyone who should be starting in a couple of years. I hope Mills is that QB. I hope Nico & Brevan can play on that team. But haven’t seen anything from them to suggest they will.

I would think that on offense

Collins/Cooks/Brown/Jordan/Auclair/Heck Tunsil/Britt/Morrisey/Howard/ Mills/Burkhead/maybe Taylor.

Defense

Greenard/Blacklock/Collins/Lopez/Maybe Martin

KGH/Kirksey/ Maybe Hewitt/Pierre Lewis.

Mitchell/Thomas/Smith and maybe Brooks/Maybe Moore on ST's.
You're willing to resign all of these guys to multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts?

My wife asked me what wrong with Texans, my quick answer was everything.

That said, the moment the only players who would qualify for me are

-Tunsil and Reid and I understand why anyone would say no to either

Should but not at their current production

Howard, scharping, and Heck (1st, 2nd and 4th round Olmen is good draft capital)

Blacklock and Lonnie Johnson

Glimmer of production, but need more before a real commitment

Jordan, Greenard, martin, Lopez, Collins

Because the salary floor might make the team pay somebody

Cooks, Kamu G.-Hill,

There is not a single player on this team that cannot be substantially upgraded. We have seen the greatest talent flight from a single team in modern football history and there is no quick fix. In fact, as long as the current front office is in place there is no chance to even begin the process of correcting the problems. Of course, this has been true for the last 8 years, so don't expect change any time soon.

The roster was purged for a purpose. The process of correcting the problems has already begun. The purpose of signing players to one year contracts should be more obvious. I don’t agree with your player assessment.

Those players were signed as perceived 'culture' fits, not because there is some grand plan to build a competitive team over the next 5 years, but rather more because of their subservient attitudes. How many times have you heard the FO prattle on about winning 'the right way'? The right way means not questioning authority, and being of what they deem high character. This franchise is not trying to tank. They genuinely believed at the beginning of the season this collection of players would be competitive at minimum.

If you're grand scheme as an organisation is to build a better team by recruitment based on anything other than production or potential, then you're on a hiding to nothing.

Welcome to the next 6-10 years, unless Cal gets fed up and turns it over to someone competent.

I want Davis Mills back on a big contract. I just want to hear all the screaming and moaning that'll come out of it. :evilb:
You got it Thorn: we do have a bunch of whiny bitches here on this Board.
Everybody who pays any real attention to the Texans, especially in the dual wake of the fallout from the DW4 mess & the the industrial sabotage perpetrated upon the Texans' roster by former "GM" Bill O'Brien, recognized that this year was gonna be the first season in a complete rebuild and consequently a mulligan in terms of wins & loses.

no one is claiming otherwise. The question is whether or not any of our current roster is worth building around.

Nope. Those players were signed to one year contracts because a one year contract is only a placeholder. They were signed to make this team as competitive as possible as you have stated... but only for the transition process and especially to run a more efficient TC. Any problem with that? Would you prefer 30-40 UDFA’s instead? They are still bringing in younger players for tryouts about every week, btw. and get off your misguided concept of culture. Are you actually saying you want to “build” a team with poor character players that question the authority of their coaches and are subservient to the point of having to get pushed in TC? Wow the NFL is just filled with teams following that concept. That’s not what they mean by culture.

So at one level Casserio is still in Training Camp mode, i.e. still shopping for groceries, which is the luxury an NFL team has for the longer term when current year W-L record doesn't mean squat.

What do you mean by "build around". Of course we don't currently have that perennial impact star player. That won't come until possibly the next couple of drafts. But Greenard has 8 sacks with 6 games to go and while missing, I believe, 4 games. He's been shut out in only one game. He's definitely a young player we can build around.

Actually, I would keep Nico one more year. I think he has potential. Brevan Jordan also.
And you have to keep Mills - he is so raw still, you can't really make a true assessment of him just yet. Give him a sound Oline and running game and he could blossom into a serviceable QB.
I do agree with the guys you mentioned on the D.

To be honest we may have several players on O that may fill the bill. I gave him the benefit of the doubt after TT was injured, but I wouldn’t dis anyone while Kelly is still OC. Look at the D. Many here were writing off Greenard, and even Lovie, but Lovie and his system has elevated the game of many players. Greenard only gets about a sack or two a game, lol. And don’t forget the emerging of J Martin. Kelly elevates nobody.

We are going to have to get used to the idea of having some average type guys on the roster otherwise it will get real expensive real fast.
Some of these average types will benefit having some stars around them.

Well yeah. Quality starters get the ball rolling but nobody plays a season without injuries. It‘s the backups that keep the play level consistent. That’s this whole culture thing. We want quality depth that understands their role and can see that as an avenue to work hard and toward a starting position. That’s where the character quality is needed. Never stop working to get better. Perhaps NC saw that type of motivation as a reason to hire Culley.

Nobody has a team that is all populated by all-pro players. All teams have a lot of average to less than average players. It's those few all-pros you might have that make the difference. We have two, and neither are playing right now, and one isn't going to play for us anyway. You ain't gonna win games like that.

There are 5 players that are avg to above avg on Defense.

Greenard/Blacklock/Martin/Lopez/KGH the only 3 I see as guys that can be difference makers are Greenard/Blacklock/KGH. The difference makers will come from the draft. (Guys like Hutchinson Thibodeaux/Stingley) Adding these guys will make the other guys even better due to the attention they will draw, giving the listed guys more 1 on 1 opportunities.

On offense the above avg guys are

Tunsil/Collins/Cooks. Then you have young guys like Heck/Howard have that ability to become avg to slightly above avg guys. Jordan appears to have promise along with Auclair/Brown as blocking TE's. Caserio needs to badly find 2 to 3 OL in the draft and FA.

If I was in Caserio's shoes I would go out and spend the $$$$ sign the best FA OG on the market. Then hope a guy like Salyer from Georgia falls to the top of the 3rd rd and the offense will look a whole lot better.

All of this can be done in 1 offseason. Of course the elephant in the room is whether Mills is the future at QB. Unfortunately we wont know the answer to this question as long as the Texans QB's have to play the rest of this season behind this OL.

Every team, good or bad, works out players every week.

I'm not sure there's a single player on this roster that will be significant when/if this team becomes a contender. #lost years

At this point, I'm not convinced that there is anyone in the entire franchise that will be significant when/if this team becomes a contender.

Yeah, I never said we didn't. I think we have a few pieces that are worth keeping at the right price on both sides of the ball. But the vast majority of this roster will be purged in the next two seasons.

Right. 29 contracts expire after this season, according to spotrac, and most of those are from the purge that took place this past offseason. That won't stop until they get a core in place and unfortunately, that may take several drafts.

when I mentioned the Texans working out players every week that was a shot at those bemoaning our one year contracted players vs signing UDFA’s to fill out the roster and to find “gems”. why fill out a roster with UDFA’s when you can try them out or sign players off of practice squads. Bet we keep more players on one year contracts than UDFA’s after the season.

I agree. However, I approached this question as "what are the last positions I'd upgrade."

I'm not going to actively look for a replacement for Kirksey before I pay out the wahoo to get CBs & Safeties in here.
Using DraftTech's current top 100, there are two CB's and one S in the top 10. Then at the top of the 2nd round, there are at least two at each position. This draft is deep at these positions for the first two rounds.

I'm with Steelb that by the 3rd round we need to start looking to draft interior offensive linemen. But as projections now look (DraftTech) the draft looks weak at this point for offensive linemen.

But, defensive backfield and interior offensive line, these are the two more important areas that need addressing, in my opinion.

...Then hope a guy like Salyer from Georgia falls to the top of the 3rd rd...
I find Salyer to be a bit confusing. DraftTech doesn't rate him in their top 100, although SI had him rated top 50. Googling, I find him playing OT but out with a foot injury.

Justin Shaffer has been Georgia's left side OG and is rated #96 by DraftTech. Do you have an opinion?

I’d be willing to give Mills all of 2022 to prove he’s the answer going forward.

The left side of the Georgia ol is there strength. Shaffer has looked good but I don't know if he's draft eligible. Slayer is playing LT and has great feet for a big dude. I think if he moves inside he will be a stud LG. He doesn't have the measureables to play LT in the NFL.

I know Salter is hurt but don't know how badly. Maybe he will be there at the top of the 3rd.

I would turn the question around. What player worth more than a pack of gum would want to sign a long term deal here? Like seriously. It’s like asking the titanic passengers that survived if they would like to sign-up for lifetime cruises. I mean it’s nuts in here even talking about this. People don’t want to be here, sign here, or have anything to do with this dumpster fire.

A new coaching staff and a strong draft would definitely raise eyebrows. Let the new staff and players execute well in 2022 and it probably creates talk in a positive light. Another solid draft in 2023 plus plenty of cap space……and that’s probably the year Caserio goes top FA shopping and those players are actually listening.

you come by your screen name honestly. While we are at it, let’s pretend Cal is actually smarter than a 5th grader and the Preacher slips on a banana peel. Frankly, I think this team has no chance of being truly good and being attractive to FA or top flight coaches as long as Cal and the Preacher are in charge. We are talking years and possibly decades. Many of us will be dead before this dumpster fire is relevant. For an example, see Lions, Detroit.

I believe Caserio will exit stage left for a better job if Cal and his buddy, the Preacher want to pull all the strings from behind the curtain while he’s the one collecting the blame.

If Caserio says, “duck this!!!”……then I’ll know where to place the blame.

Money & the opportunity to start/play talks and the nonsensical BS that fans like you worry about?.......it goes out the window when those 2 things are more prominent for the player. Yes you will likely have to overpay...that's the name of the game in FA period, but to act like those 2 things the Texans could possibly offer to a FA isn't as good as any other teams' is stupid. FA pool this year isn't even all that great. Both of the marquee guys (Adams and Gilmore) are likely resigning with the teams they're with now.

I have, of course, thought highly of Roy Lopez but haven't really zeroed in on just how well he has been playing.

In this morning's Chronicle, John McClain had a good write up on "Caserio's first draft class". Here's what he had to say about Lopez:

...Lopez has been the most productive. He has started the last 10 games and become a fixture on Lovie Smith's defensive line...Lopez, whose primary job is to tie up blockers, has 19 tackles (two for loss), one sack, one fumble recovery and two quarterback knockdowns. With six games left, he's assured of having more tackles than any rookie defensive tackle in team history...Pro Football Focus gives Lopez a 65.5 grade, which is second among the league's 11 rookies who play in the interior defensive line...

Not bad for a 6th round pick. Along with Greenard, Lopez appears to be another defensive talent the Texans can build around. Give Caserio credit for this gem of a find.

I see some fans are starting to get what I've been saying about the McNair's all along. What I don't get is fans acting like scorned lovers.

I don't blame any of this on Easterby, this is fully on the McNair's. They signed a Pervert to that contract and are now paying the price for that decision by having to rebuild like an expansion team. Embrace the rebuild. It was needed whether Derrick was still here or not. I mean the team won 4 games with Derrick and likely will win 3-4 without him.

Let's just hope Cal is telling the truth when he says Caserio's making all of the football decisions. Cal is certainly paying Caserio like he's making all of the football decisions.

Yep. Some folks seem to believe the Texans operate in a vacuum, but the reality is the reputation of the owner and franchise is at an all-time low. This franchise has become a national laughing stock and it is directly related to terrible management by those in charge.

When a HoF-worthy player like AJ, who spent 99% of his career in Houston, speaks about the sorry state of the franchise, you'd better believe that folks are listening.

And he's not the only former Texan player that is saying it. Cal and Jack are two people that 50% of players will avoid like the plague, and the players the Texans end up with are overpaid (and probably over the hill) mercenaries looking for the highest bidder and rookies that have no choice.

And good luck with putting a good team out there when you've got David Culley leading the charge. Nice guy and all, but there is obviously a reason he's NEVER been considered for a HC gig. Some guys are good at being assistants and that's their thing. Maybe he was the only one willing to put up with the Texans front office dysfunction and obviously tainted hierarchy.

Cal and Jack are two people that 50% of players will avoid like the plague,
This reads like an over active imagination. I’m sure there’s some hyperbole mixed in, but… how can I prove 51% of players will ride with Nick & Jack?

Are you saying starting next season or does that include this year’s team?
Nice guy and all, but there is obviously a reason he's NEVER been considered for a HC gig.
So far he’s been par for the course. I don’t think he’s been any better or worse than Capers, Kubiak, or O’Brien their first years.

personally I hope he figures it out & perform a lot better in 2022. Otherwise everything the Texans do this year & next will be for naught. Wasted time. & I’m just not ok with the guys up top wasting time. I understand some here relish the thought.

I wasn’t raised that way.

Kubiak went 6-10 with lesser talents in his first year here.

The same AJ that backed a Sexual Predator in the Sexual Predators desire to get traded? And I'm not saying AJ was all wrong. But he, like alot of posters on here backed the wrong horse.

Culley is and always was a placeholder. The next HC will truly be Caserio's 1st HC hire. I thought Culley would last 2 yrs before a change would be made. Now I'm thinking he may be gone after this season. Which is kinda sad because I'm kinda liking Lovie's defense.
