Week 3: Carolina at Houston

Turning the page to Panthers…game is Thursday. WD40 aint playing, a new QB isn’t going to show up. Its Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel week… maybe with some wildcat samplings from all of our RBs.

Hopefully Justin Reid, Tunsil, Nico Collins and Amendola (am I missing anyone else? Ouch…) are healthy enough to play.

Not as confident in this team’s ability to win or be competitive late into the game without Tyrod at QB but I still think this team will be fighting until the end. The leaders are starting to appear (Ingram, Cooks, Kirksey, Reid, Britt) and hopefully they can keep the team focused and fighting while Tyrod hopefully makes a quick recovery.

It would be a nice surprise if Davis Mills can improve just enough to QB this team to a W this week.
Mark my words, Davis Mills has NO FUTURE as a starting Qb in the NFL.

And yet, with 6 minutes left in the game they were only down 3 points on the road in the hostile Dawg Pound. Game getting away from them in the second half? Didn't happen. Garrett and Clowney having a field day with the OL? Didn't happen. In both games this season - in which the Texans were the underdogs - the running game hasn't shown up and yet they managed a blow out win and played the Browns close until the end.

Not saying the Panthers aren't a decent team. I am saying their first game of the season was against the Jets with a Rookie QB and their second was against the Saints who had players doing coaching duties during the game. Carolina has also played both their games at home. They have been very fortuitous so far this season in terms of everything breaking their way.

All that to say, do I think the Panthers win on Thursday, but I don't think the scoring margin will be more than the 10 points from the Browns game. Even with Mills at QB. Which was the intent of my question to Texansballer74 who had it at 13.
The same can be said for the Texans.
Both the Jaguars and the Browns were playing without multiple starters, and some of those who did play were nursing injuries.

Speaking of McCaffery. With McKinney gone, the LB speed has improved. However, I'm still having visions of McCaffery being isolated on these LBs and Cunningham three steps behind chasing him downfield.

Historically, how have pass catching RBs fared against Lovie's Cover 2?

I think it's more of a commitment to put the ball in their best player's hands.
They could have thrown it to him more.

24 carries at 2.9 ypc, that's a commitment to the run. I imagine they felt they controlled the game from beginning to end & just let the Saints make mistake after mistake.

I think you are wrong. I'm not saying he will be a top starter, but I think he has a future as a starter.
I would love for the kid to succeed. I just think he hurt himself too much by opting for the NFL draft much too soon. If he is to reach his full potential it most likely will take him longer than it will for other Qb's in his draft class.

With Amendola likely out and Nico Collins out next 3-4 weeks I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the PS WRs get elevated this week. Whoever Mills is more comfortable with between Chris Moore and Jordan Veasy to fill Collins’ role.

Anthony Miller will step in for Amendola and hopefully make the trade for him a win by earning his reps the rest of the season. He has a good chance to be a security blanket with big play upside for our rookie QB.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Brevin Jordan activated this week going with another pass catcher option that Mills might be comfortable with after working with him throughout the offseason.

I'm actually pretty interested in seeing the offense, or what's left of it. In this situation under OB the offense would have gone completely off the rails, with this new crowd doing the coaching I don't think they will. Not that they'll win, but I think we'll see the offense put up some points.

To be fair to OB, his best “coaching” performances were when he had no time to “game plan” and outsmart himself.

The Keenum “deer stand” game and WD40’s short week starting debut with no healthy TEs or Fuller were his best coaching jobs as a Texan imo.

You're telling me I should take the Over? :runaway:

Miller very well may play, but from what I've heard on 610, it's too soon. He should not be playing.

Andre Roberts could see increased work in Week 3 if Collins is unavailable.

This is unlikely. The Texans will bring up from the practice squad Chris Moore and/or Jordan Veasy. We might also see increased use of our TE's. This actually is a positive because Mills worked with both Moore and Veasy during training camp as second and third strings. In particular, I remember Veasy working well with Mills.

Just reporting what was posted on CBS's website.

If the Texans go with Davis Mills now, they are throwing the season away. They would more or less be acknowledging the season is already over.

I say they at least sign Cam Newton as Davis Mills back up in case things get real ugly fast. Starting Davis Mills now without at least having Cam as his security blanket would be foolish. Our team has showed that with quality quarterback play they can compete. If they insist on seeing what they have in regards to Davis Mills than at least have Cam on stand by. No harm, no foul.

I was going to say the same thing. I also believe Veasy was Mills‘ guy during the pre-season games.

Throw it to Pharoah Brown damn it. He laid a goose egg for my on Sunday.
I know Brown was banged up last week. But I found it interesting he was only targeted once the entire game. I hope this is not some remnant of the "game plan" offense that quickly abandons things that worked previously or ignores the TEs for weeks at a time.

I don’t think that’s the case. The Texans were running a great game plan against a team most everyone thought would blow them out. It actually quieted the stadium. My guess is that in this game those TE’s had something to do with the ineffectiveness of Garrett and Clowney

Like when the TE ran out on a route without blocking anybody that resulted in Mills' getting creamed?

That's a fair point. Maybe they kept the TEs in for blocking. However, Cooks ended up with 14 targets and no other player had more than two. Were the RBs also staying in to block?

Probably. TT had great protection from a group effort. Other than Lindsay I can’t remember how many RB’s caught a pass. From DC and TK’s comments their game plan is focused on attacking weaknesses so maybe they were targeting the Browns DB’s. All I know was that it was working. Game one they were using those three TE sets that were really effective. At least DC’s have more to worry about on film.

Good thing he's not alone.

He might feel like it if the Panthers continue to rack up sacks like they have in the first two weeks.

And considering his lack of experience and deer-in-the-headlights look in the last game. . .let's just clutch our rosary beads for the dude is all I'm sayin'. . . :panic:

Ok. So much for Lindsay’s TD catch. But I thought you said it was a TE that didn’t block the blitz Anyway.
IF a LB or an extra DL was coming on a blitz, it is the RBs responsibility to block that LB, or DL.

IF it's a Safety or a CB, the RB is supposed to go out in the pattern, while a TE comes over & pick up the blitz.

Especially if the Safety is blitzing from depth. That's the TEs responsibility.
