Welcome to Houston, Tyrod Taylor

Jack Easterby might know God, he sure doesn’t know football. There are players, coaches and executives that are deeply committed to their faith; their football IQ is astronomically higher than Easterby’s.

Easterby is arguably the worst sports executive in the world. His faith served him well in New England - he was suited for that role. While he may be a saint as a character coach, he is a demon as a personnel executive.

Cal set the franchise up for failure when he anointed Easterby with an executive role. Easterby does not have the football aptitude to manage the team.

Tyrod Taylor stats in Buffalo

63.7% 3025 yards 20 touchdowns 6 interceptions 568 yards rushing 4 touchdowns
61.7% 3021 yards 17 touchdowns 6 interceptions 580 yards rushing 6 touchdowns
62.6% 2799 yards 14 touchdowns 4 interceptions 427 yards rushing 4 touchdowns

With the talent he had, he was able to get them to the playoffs. Then something went wrong.

These are not mind blowing stats but TT is a pretty good bridge type quarterback.

I read that he got a concussion in the playoff game and did not get to finish it.

That's all fine, but the Texans won 4 games with Watson ballin his ass off. I don't see that improving with Taylor.

Nothing against Taylor, mind you. Whoever the QB was going to be was coming to a shitty situation.

The Texans only won 4 mainly because of the defense. Now we have a new defensive coordinator with a different scheme. You have new players being brought in to fit said scheme. The offense should be ok and with them beefing up the offensive line, we might have a decent running game. Time will tell,

I think Ingram would have done better than the guys we had last year. Not Derrick Henry better, but maybe a couple of wins better.

& if our OL can play better than they did last year, that might be another couple. So I think Nick has put together an 8-8 team so far.

Scheme ain't **** if you don't have talent. A defense full of special teamers won't help no matter what the scheme is.

You're also going to have a QB less talented than Watson. So that equalizes anything you might be gaining elsewhere.

These players were not special teasers.

Kevin Pierre-Louis LB
Maliek Collins DT
Christian Kirksey LB
Shaw Lawson DE

These four players could possibly improve your defense .

Even Joe Thomas is pretty decent, very versatile playing all LB positions.

I don't see how any of them are much better, if at all, than what we've had. And none of them are JJ Watt and just the attention alone that he demands.

Lawson hasn't had a season with over 6.5 sacks. Mercilus has had more that that 4 times.
Kirksey has had 13.5 sacks in 7 seasons.
Pierre-Louis started 4 games in his 1st 6 seasons.
Joe Thomas, 14 starts in 7 years.
Collins in the middle may make the most impact of any of those guys you mentioned, but he didn't have a very good season last year.

I just don't see what's better than what we had.

you think NC is playing this for 2021? Lol. What. NC is gonna load up with “talent” this year and win the division? NC if anything has a vision and signing a few ill placed expensive “talented” free agents on a roster that MUST be purged first is asinine IMO And obviously in his also. This isn’t instant gratification time. This guy is shaking his roster to the core so what will emerge is HIS team and our shitty past is history. he wants ZERO threads of the past left.

That may be the case, but he wants to win as much as he can. I think the short term deals says he has an eye on the future. But the money he’s giving these guys says he definitely wants that particular player.

This is more of a retooling, imo, than the gut it at all cost rebuild I was expecting.

Those FA’s are all one year and two year signings.
Caserio is removing average players from the old regime and replacing them with average players from FA.
He’s changing the locker room and removing the old attitude.
He’s entering into a rebuild now more than ever.
That’s why he’s not trying to keep anyone.

Oh, we’re just getting warmed up.
Wait for the draft. Caserio will be busy.

Whoa! I'm not the one saying we're loading up on talent with a scheme that'll make us better. Why you quoting me?

I have no issue purging the roster of what's been around here the last few years. I simply don't see much that has changed with what they've brought in. TB74 apparently sees it different.

Like I said, no issue with that. I'm not the one getting pumped up with the new faces and new schemes.

I always appreciate your thoughtful views. And I completely agree he wants those players he’s signing. And I agree he wants to win but I’m pretty sure those short term deals are his hedge on the future IF they don’t perform to his standards, and he knows the odds. I think “retooling” is a hope and a shortcut but I believe he’ll gut this team in a heartbeat to change its culture if necessary and those short term deals prove it. This guy certainly knows the methods of his job. Oh man, he’s in charge and he seems to have a laser vision. I’m on board because if a new GM of this team has to do anything it would be to eradicate from memory any connection with our past.

I am most excited to see Tyrod play. Actually, the only thing. I hope he has the come back type of career and proves to be nice filler type of QB as we find our franchise QB. Whether that is for the next 1-2 years or 3-4. Hopefully no longer.

He will get to play behind a decent o-line. Have decent wide receivers.

There was definitely some bad luck in San Diego.

Hopefully he can have a streak of good luck.

Maybe this yr we will see some sustained drives instead of the homerun or nothing offense we've seen over the last 3 yrs.

Taylor is a good QB. And if he fits well in a system he is very good. Pure talent, he is not Watson. However, Jake Delhome (sp) wasn't the best QB and went to the Super Bowl. He was a good fit for the system he was in and was talented enough to win. Taylor is similar and maybe even Mills is the same (with some time to learn). Could we find a super stud QB at some point? Sure, but just keep in mind a stud QB may or may not win a title. Manning in Indy won 1, and he had great role player type teammates. However, Brady with arguably less talent has won more (not including TB). Because he has the brains to not make dumb mistakes.

If Tyrod Taylor plays all 17 games, & finishes with a 70 QBR, would you be opposed to extending his contract for two or three more years?

No, if only because I don't want to have 13 different threads talking about how they wasted a 3rd round pick on Mills.

Watson’s monster year last year resulted in a 63.7 QBR. Taylor’s career best is 66.3, so getting a 70 would be an outrageous season, thus highly improbable. Only 5 QBs were 70+ last season.

So if Taylor had a highly improbably good season, would it upset you if the Texans signed for two more seasons at $12M per?

The bigger concern is them doing it for a rather average season. If he balls out I've got no problem bringing him back for another season, maybe sign him for 2 if getting out of that 2nd season when he turns back into a pumpkin, doesn't kill their cap, but I don't go any more than that because 1) he's not the future, and 2) a 70 QBR season would be such an outlier from the norm. After 11 years he's not going to suddenly be elite.

Only 5 QBs were 70+ last season.
  1. Aaron Rodgers
  2. Patrick Mahomes
  3. Josh Allen
  4. Ryan Tannehill
  5. Ryan Fitzpatrick

I don’t think it will happen. Just thinking out loud, those two at the bottom of the list of five aren’t much different than Tyrod.

Personally I’d be peeved if they sign him for two years, unless they can make a clean break that second year.

That’s what I mean. If I’m to believe the “experts”, right now, that next years QB class isn’t all that, then why not bring back Taylor if he balls out? Again, that’s a big if.

But I don’t do it for 3 years. And I’d only do it for 2 if that 2nd year doesn’t kill the cap if/when he goes back to normal.

Tannehill is way better than you give him credit for.

Isn't Taylor signed for next yr too?

If Mills plays and proves to not be the guy, I would sign TT on another 1 yr deal.
You almost need to sign him again regardless. If Mills isn't the guy and they draft a 1st rd QB, who will be the veteran presence and the same may apply even if Mills is the guy. They will need to make a decision on TT before the end of the season due to timing. In season you may get a discount vs after season's end. That way they can focus on their draft strategy and make the best selections and not because they are forced to.

Smart thing to do.
