Texans versus Buccaneers

I’m interested how coaches treat this game with no 4th preseason game and 2 weeks before the season. Will this be the traditional “dress rehearsal” 3rd preseason game for the starters? Or will it be more like the 4th preseason game of past years to settle final roster cuts and practice squad?

Yes. I have been surprised in last two games for various reasons and hope to see more improvement than I expected such as offense catching up to level of defense. More 'jelling' of oline. More passes to tight ends. Etc

I believe Culley said the starters would play the 1st half, and play into the 3rd quarter.

Cut down on mistakes, improve offensive flow, and how the defense handles the Bucs offense in the 1st quarter. Just not sure if they'll starters for more than a quarter before the season starts.

On a side note.....wish the NFL would incorporate a NFL Bye-Week for their trade deadline. It would almost make it like a in-season draft....not to mention, players moved during this period could be better acclimated to their new team before its first game.

I’m hoping that #24 is not allowed to set foot on the field ever again! He was complete garbage against the Cowboys, and showed no skill or heart. I don’t know where they found his sorry ass, but they should dump him back off and not look back.

I'm excited about this game because it should be the closest to the real deal, which we have to wait for two more weeks.
Not sure but think that WR Miller is the only serious injury the Texans roster has suffered in the preseaon, so I'm hopeful we are able to play this final preseason game without any significant injuries.
The OLine is the unit that I'm most interested in so I'm disappointed that reportedly Tunsil still not back from Covid so guess he's out again for Saturdays game.

The WR group is definitely one to watch with final cuts looming.

The team has 5 locks in my mind:

Cooks, Conley, Collins, Miller (though some may disagree on Miller) and Andre Roberts.

With the team skewing run-heavy this season that means likely 4 TEs (or 3 with FB Quessenberry). Also 4-5 RBs depending on if you feel Buddy Howell needs to stay as a ST ace.

With a ST roster spot locked up by Roberts at WR will the Texans keep 6?

Will the team move Miller to PUP to start the season to gain another healthy WR until Miller is 100%?

Lots of competition for that extra WR spot. If the team will even choose to carry a 6th WR. Will they go with an outside WR that can contribute as a blocker on ST like Moore or Veasy? Or will they go with a slot that can be a returner in a pinch like Keke or Erickson? I don’t think they do both.

A week without any games? Not going to happen.
I know but the NFL could make this a big thing if marketed like they know how to market. Also, NFL wouldn’t be losing anything and maybe gaining more than expected.

Like the way MLB uses the All Star game +-mid-season. Teams could use it for transactions or just getting healthier.

It would also put every team on equal footing since everyone would break at the same time versus the current staggered system of bye weeks.

Sounds like the Texans have run plain vanilla blocking and rushing schemes. Seems our simple blocking scheme didn’t match up well with Dallas throwing in blitzes when they desired. Would like to see a better preview of both the O and D for our first season game

How are you selling that to the TV networks? A week with no games? Pushing the Super Bowl well into February? Not feasible and really not necessary. Mid season trades have never been a big deal in the NFL.

Would have been a good idea before the NFL started playing international games. Now staggered bye weeks are here to stay.

I would think the players would be for it to give them a chance to rest and heal perhaps go and visit family.

Don't want to let our opponent or our offense know much about our game plan going into the season...

Just get the reps in, cause they sure look like they need it. 2 weeks off after this is kinda crazy, but because of it, the 1's have to play.

I'm interested in seeing if they just go with Taylor and Mills, or do they keep a 3rd QB, whether it's Driskel or someone else?

Wanna see Nico gets some reps and targets. Could this be Coutee's last game in Deep Steel Blue?

Still not going to see the starting 5 on the o-line, so that's a bummer.

TE is interesting. How many do they keep? Jordan and Brown are locks. I think Akins is a lock but he's part of the old regime that they seem to be rushing out of here. Gave up a draft pick for Izzo, so that would be yet another waste if he's axed. Yeah, I know, 7th, who cares?

And does Andre Roberts actually see some returns this week? I actually like what Desmond King has been doing in the return game, so Roberts probably needs to get some reps in. Has he been injured or something? Is that why he hasn't played?

The defense? I don't know. Questions all around there. I think Mercilus is a wasted spot, but he's probably a starter. I think Omenihu could have a break out season. Interesting to see how that all shakes out, d-line, LBs, and particularly the secondary.

Shaq and Lonnie Johnson on trade block?
Surprised by Lonnie Johnson. Maybe its a case of “sell-high” after the pick six?

But I think the secondary is better with him on it than not. Like him for the season over Eric Murray even though depth chart has Murray listed as the starter.

Since I posted this I saw another suggestion that Johnson should be traded for Landon Collins
Safety for WFT.

Source?

Collins is coming off a torn achilles and is in year 3 of a 6 yr/84 million dollar contract. Not likely he’ll be traded unless it’s an Osweiller esque contract dump.

Greenard has suffered a gade II high ankle sprain.....besides time lost, this type of injury is not entirely predictable.............when he returns, it may affect him through the season.

this is not the source but reminded me that I read it on Bleacher Report.

When I am reading several sources a day I rarely copy and post the link and then later something reminds me of that info and I don't always take the time to look it up. I agree with your evaluation of that trade.

Lonnie Johnson has tweeted........."Don't believe everything ya hear".........
Which I say then you may believe a bit of it, maybe not “everything“ but enough to perk up and pay attention. I’d suspect that his performance indicates he gone after this year so why wait? Get something in return.

Schemes, not game plan. They can game plan differently for the Jags. Since I thought this thread is about what we would like to see, for me this is it. I would like to see more of the O and D books opened. With twenty or so cuts coming (53+ PS) id like to see more of what these players are being asked to do.

Agreed. For example if the team is thinking about carrying a FB I want to see what the fringe players look like playing FB (Quessenberry, Izzo, Auclair, even Howell/Phillips).

If the team wants to carry both Christian and Heck I want to see these guys play interior OL to justify cutting an interior guy like Mccray to keep them.

You seem to have missed my pun that the offensive scheme or game plan should also be kept from our offensive players. Here's to hoping that our offense plays better today.

I don't see why Murray makes this team. I know he has $3.5 million guaranteed. So what? Is he one of the best 53 players? I don't think so, even on this roster.

Agreed. Not sure why he’s considered a starter on the depth chart either. Hopefully we get more clarity on the planned starters in the secondary tonight.

Would just love to see the Q and girls in shorts and cowboy boots. BTW is that your Q or is it at the Corkscrew in Spring?
This is my Q. When I got laid off last summer , I started my own catering business. They hired me back on in September. So I have sold any Q since.

Beat that storm that about to hit Louisiana sometime tomorrow.

I tried Corkscrew for the first time Friday when I made it home. Heard they were really good. Wasn’t disappointed at all.
