What player you preferred at #67 over QB Davis Mills

Texans were at his pro day and from what I have heard were very impressed.

He ran a 4.58 40 , a 4.37 short shuttle , 6.90 3 cone drill & a 9'2" broad jump.
This is what PFF had listed for Mills measurables:
3 Cone = 6.96 76th %tile
40 = 4.78 58th %tile
Shuttle = 4.40s 38th %tile
Vertical = 32" 55th %tile
Broad = 110" 40th %tile

Broad = 110" 40th percentile
So the same as Watsons.
What are you trying to prove?

It had to come from someone so why not me? No poll needed.
I'd have preferred a 2022 2nd round pick.

My strategy entering 2021 draft:

1. Create future cap space by swallowing bad contracts - not restructuring to generate immediate space
2. Ditch expensive dead wood and take early cap penalties
3. Trade 2021 picks for superior 2022 picks
4. Maximize likelihood of optimal 2022 picks by being terrible in 2021
5. 'Up sell' DW4 to create 2022 auction
6. Smash the 2022 draft
7. Augment with 2022 free-agents

Every team has QB decision’s to make (back-ups) even if they have a franchise QB.

Texans are in a holding pattern with their’s, but eventually, will be without him & franchise QB, again.

Tyrod Taylor is a career back-up with good athletic ability but never a plus arm. Texans way over paid him to be their starting QB.

Driscoll is a journeyman. Like his toughness and tenacity and would be ok keeping him for emergencies.

Mills does have a plus arm and shows ability mentally to grasp concepts needed to run system as a starter. However he needs protection. He maybe in the mold of a Matt Schwab with a stronger arm.

No question to me Davis Mills was a selection based off a QB needy team trying to manufacture some new talent for position. Were there better players available, absolutely, but were there any better players available at this position of need?

Only time will tell, but I like what I see.

This is the same observation @CloakNNNdagger & I came to recently ....

He makes good decisions with the ball and has been fairly accurate similar to Schaub & has a much better arm ....

He's also athletic enough to move around if required. He ran a faster 40 than DW4 by a tenth of a second .... No , he's not as slippery as Watson.

Something else I've seen is those "anticipation" throws where he's hitting guys before they come out of their break ...

There's some talent and ability to work with , I think they have to play him at some point this season just to see what he can do against regular season NFL talent rather than preseason who's that trying to earn a roster spot. Particularly if they are in position to have a very high draft pick ....

Ive said the exact same thing with friends and clients. I’m hopeful Mills can develop in
to a Schaub level QB with a better arm and mobility.

Regardless of how much exposure Mills gets this season, I no longer think the Texans will be at the point where they have to force a QB at their pick. The entire roster needs an upgrade. And a QB isn't going to make a difference in 2022. In 2017, the thought was that the Texans were a QB away from contention. Not so, at this point.

I'm not sure there will even be a QB prospect that presents value when the Texans make their pick in 2022. There's a handful of guys that are considered OK and maybe one emerges. But it's just as likely there's not. But, the Texans may have extra picks from a Watson trade, so a QB likely will be drafted at some point. That's OK, as a QB competition between Mills and a 2022 draft pick won't be a bad thing. And it doesn't have to be settled immediately as both would be on rookie deals.

Where did you see that? Not in the link you provided.
Yes that's why I said if I remember correctly. It from and earlier article that I can't seem to find. I will continue to try to look for it but that makes sense. No way he's worth 12 million with his injury history

IIRC games started was biggest incentive .
I believe the early reports misrepresented the roster incentive. His roster bonus maxes out at $500K, but that's for the entire season if he is on the game roster for 17 games (he gets $29.4K per game). I think people looked at that as $500K per game.

If you come to the conclusion that Mills can be the guy , you don't use those draft picks to go get someone else , you use them to put better pieces around him and you probably keep Tyrod or someone similar a couple years as your backup.
Now if you come to the conclusion that Mills isn't more than a backup or a placeholder ..... you should be looking to replace him one way or another.

You need to know if he can play with the big boys or not ....

(That doesn't mean "force a pick").

To clarify Taylor's contract up to $12 million

Tyrod Taylor Contract Breakdowns, Salary Cap Figures, Salaries, Bonuses | Spotrac

Tyrod Taylor signed a 1 year, $5,500,000 contract with the Houston Texans, including a $2,500,000 signing bonus, $2,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,500,000. In 2021, Taylor will earn a base salary of $2,500,000, a signing bonus of $2,500,000 and a roster bonus of $323,529, while carrying a cap hit of $5,323,529 and a dead cap value of $2,500,000.
I can't find any of the incentives listed. If they are not likely to be earned incentives, they won't hit the cap until next league year.

I don't find any incentives either .... and the only "bonus" is a per game bonus of $29,411 (x17= 499,987).
