Texans Trade for Anthony Miller

Bears trade Anthony Miller to Texans

Don't know the terms of the trade. But I have to ask the same question I've asked after other Caserio deals. Why not wait until the player is cut?

Even as the trade speculation continues to swirl, it appears Anthony Miller may yet survive one more season with the Chicago Bears. He should count himself fortunate. Normally when the owner of the franchise singles you out as a major disappointment, you’re usually gone. That is what George McCaskey did to Miller following his unceremonious ejection from the playoff loss to the Saints. This after repeated warnings not to get involved with known agitator Chauncey Gardner-Johnson only to punch him on live TV.

Miller’s entire 2020 season was pure frustration. It looked like towards the end of 2019 that the former 2nd round pick had finally started to find his groove. Expectations were high going into Year 3. Then Miller produced career lows in both yards (485) and touchdowns (2). He continued to have problems both with dropping catchable passes and also running the wrong routes. These mental lapses clearly grated on the patience of his coaches.

In this instance I'd say to keep the Jags and Jets from making a waiver claim on him, which I guess is a possibility. But here we go dealing away draft picks again for a season that isn't expected to be all that. I guess they think they can do more with a 6-11, 7-10 season as opposed to 3-14?? I don't understand anything they're doing right now.

For a 1year rental. Dude is on the last year of his rookie deal. He may not make it out of training camp.
The Texans have 12 WRs on the roster. Assuming 3 guys are locks (Cooks, Cobb, and the rookie Collins), they have 9 competing for 3 roster spots.

I'm not suggesting the Texans have a huge amount of talent at the position. I just don't see the huge need to deal for that 12th WR that is not overwhelmingly better that what they already have.

I don't think you should really count Roberts and Erickson. They're here specifically for the return game. Still though, that makes it 7 competing for 3 spots. Just another waste of a draft pick.

Without looking into the numbers, I think only 3 or 4 of these guys (to include the ones you mentioned) are sure to make the team based on their salary alone whether it be guaranteed or a significant cap loss. I just hope this trade is about increasing the level of competition and isn't the result of an injury that has not been disclosed yet.

Must be a guy Caserio fell madly in love with when Nick was at NE.

Texans picking at the dinner table scraps is all this is.
Table scraps are free, Caserio using expensive draft capital for scraps that he will likely throw in the garbage.

If as reported all this cost was swapping late round picks, who cares? Late round picks are no better than UDFA's anyway. Not that I really give a sh!t about another washed up player with minimal talent trying to make the roster. Jesus, we got a ton of those on the team this year. It's like The Dirty Dozen with Abbott and Costello in charge.

Wish I knew how that reporter defines “late round picks” it could be as early as a fifth. & for all we know, we might have the third pick in the 6th & Chicago the 27th.

That’s significant in my book. The former could be a STs ace or troubled 3rd round talent. The latter, like you said couldhave been destined fora life selling women’s shoes.

This guy is talented, at least. But he’s a headache.

If you have zero confidence in your scouting department to find talent and zero confidence in your confidence in your coaching staff to develop players, I guess it doesn’t matter. Just pass on your draft slot after the 5th round. The NFL doesn’t force teams to take their picks.

Yep. A lot of scouts were very high on Miller coming out in 2018. This is the first from Nick here of what you saw from the Pats in the past, taking a shot on a talented knucklehead to see if you can get him on track and make something of him -- namely, a compensatory pick.

If he sticks and pulls his head out and plays well enough... and then gets signed away in free agency, depending on how he performs with his future team you might get a 5th or a 4th compensatory pick. So smart GMs take a few shots every year at comp pick guys, because those picks = free $$. And every now and then you hit on a big turnaround guy. Swapping late round picks is chump change vs leveling up for a comp pick.

This is the pick conversion ratio from the bottom up, on average:

2.6 7th round picks = one 6th
1.6 6ths = one 5th
2.1 5ths = one 4th
2.7 4ths = one 3rd
2.2 3rds = one 2nd
2.4 2nds = one 1st

Here's what NFL scouts (not media) had to say about Miller before the 2018 draft:
6. ANTHONY MILLER, Memphis (5-11, 200, 4.54, 2-3): Compared by two scouts to the great Antonio Brown (5-10, 183, 4.53), who was the Steelers' sixth-round pick in 2010. "Very similar traits coming out," said one. "Every quarterback in the league would love to have him. He's a ready-made NFL slot guy. Maybe has the biggest chip on his shoulder of anybody. Hellacious football player. He may not burn up a 40 clock but he's quick and extraordinarily intelligent. He is a great blocker ... he won't be a guy that goes outside and runs away from people on the vertical stuff. His game is inside. He understands leverage, route concepts, how to adjust. He's cocky, but in a very likeable way" Led the top seven WRs on the Wonderlic with 26. Walked on at Memphis, his hometown team. "Oh, man, that is a football-playing dude: another scout said. "He's not the biggest, not the fastest, but this guy knows how to play. Tough as nails. One of the best run-after-the-catch guys I have ever done. He's a great second-round pick." Finished with 238 receptions for 3,590 yards (15.1) and 37 TDs. "He's just a good little football player: a third scout said.

Did Caserio lose a draft pick in this deal.

6th rd picks have a low % of making the team. But they can be used to sweeten draft day trades. That's why I dont like this deal.

NC has shown a propensity to trade late round picks to move up to get a player they want. Hardly speaks for not trusting your scouting department. Just the opposite actually. It does tell me that one year deals and trading late round picks to move up means he’s looking for a player and not camp fodder.

A draft pick swap is hardly throwing away draft picks.

They didn't lose a draft pick taking a flier on Miller.

BTW, I dont like the move for Miller.
They lost draft capital, there's a difference. Caserio has done this on multiple occasions. The balance of draft capital in the draft bank has been considerably depleted and wasted since Caserio has arrived. You can say that Caserio has assembled one of the biggest bunch of average and ordinary ever assembled.

If late round picks are "camp fodder", why did the Patriots draft 33 players in the 6th and 7th rounds over the past 10 years Caserio was director of player personnel? Apparently, someone else in the organization didn't think they were throwaway picks.

Makes me wonder just how much influence Caserio had on the draft in New England. And I'm more than a little nervous of how Nick will handle the high draft picks he's bound to have here in Houston. He doesn't seem to have the experience we were led to believe when taking this job.

You mean we're NOT going to win a super bowl? Wow, what a change that'll be.

I think this became clear when Bob Kraft voiced his displeasure with the Patriots free agency and draft preparations from the last five years.

Re: Anthony Miller - You can take the man out of the hood but you can't take the hood out of the man.
Anthony Miller is the latest draft miss by Bears GM Ryan Pace (msn.com)

You can go to bed and wake up Wishing and Hoping but that doesn't change the reality of matter that Caserio and Miller were both disappointments at their most recent previous employment.

In this thread specifically about the Anthony Miller trade, what draft capital has been lost?

My thing is, why is WR such a big need?

After QB, need to build trenches both sides.
I'm happy with our OL for now. I'm happy with our RBs, considering. I think we've got talent at both WR & TE positions. Adding Miller is another gamble that could pay off big.

I do agree I'd have liked to have seen as much activity on the DL.

Moving down from the 5th to say 20th in the 6th rd is worth taking a chance for a guy who was a starter last yr is a small price to pay. IMHO

Agreed that Caserio has assembled a mediocre bunch of talent and that talent is an upgrade over what they had last yr. With this said, I know what you're saying, you wanted the team to bottom out and I did too. We wanted to goabout it differently, I wanted a few vets like Cooks/Tunsil/Reid/Roby to be kept around for leadership reasons and to trade the entire 2021 draft for 2022 picks.

You wanted a scorched earth plan and there's no way the McNair's would let Caserio do that. They're finally feeling pressure from the fan base. (A good thing) Plus I haven't ever seen a rookie GM come in and go scorched earth, besides Jimmy Johnson. He proved it was the right thing to do and we are correct. But that ain't happening with the McNair's owning the team.

How big? Miller has one year left on his deal. Is he turning the Texans into a playoff team? A 4 win team into a 5 win team? What can Miller’s impact be?

Pie in the sky he could have a helluva year & get a 2nd round tender. Slightly less optimistic he could turn into a 4th round compensatory pick

Keep in mind I didn't like the trade when I heard about it. Just looking at the bright side.

I'd be thrilled if Caserio can turn him into an additional pick to go along with the swap.

Has the same feel as the signing of honey badger with decidely much lower risk but the nearly same type of potential high reward. I remember Folks here including myself saying that signing was ehh too for various reasons like he was done/wasn't the same guy since his injury/too much injury etc.

Caserio first draft as Texan GM went about as well as one could hope for with two 3rds, two 5ths and one 6th.

y’all know I favor Mills as franchise QB prospect but also think Nico has potential to be a WR1. Brevin Jordan tape is phenomenal but hate his RAS score. He is the 5th rd boom or bust prospect the Bears used a 2nd (Miller) similar talent, Scorecard Nick. Wallow is a terrific LB talent and will be a plus on special teams. Don’t know a lot about nose tackle Roy Lopez but applaud adding depth in the trenches.

My point is, every pick has value and so far I like direction of College Pro Scouting Department over NFL Scouting Department. Probably a heavier weight given to current NFL players with Texans actual coaching staff, headed by DC. So yes to TexansBull observation. Just hands off the first and second day draft slots, that’s where you acquire the premium talent.

I like how Caserio has handled the 2021 off-season. I’m also of the belief that he’s not done by any stretch of the imagination since player cuts will be done at some point. Might be the area where he goes fishing for trench talent if the one’s currently obtained are not working out as expected in camp.

This is a second chance move for this young man. His potential is pretty high. He just needs to get a handle on his attitude.

What about the gm of the dolphins a couple of years back?

That would mean Caserio wouldn't be hitting free agency. That would be an about face, especially considering how few players the Texans have signed for 2022.

It's really rhetorical. Miller isn't providing any type of impact regarding wins or future picks. This is more of Caserio looking busy to make a certain someone feel better about the team. The Texans are still on a losing trajectory. And I think that's Nick's plan.
