Depth Chart

Here’s a start I’ve made, certain positions are a real mystery to me, aside from some shuffling on the OL and where the WR group shakes out, the O seems relatively clear.

On D, the change from 3-4 to 4-3 has me really confused about which LB’s compete for the 3 base LB positions, and which compete to drop down to DE.

Then the DBs I guess I have some confusion about where Desmond King ends up playing, what they want to do with Lonnie and whether they see him as a starter anywhere.

It looks like we are over subscribed at DE

QB Watson Taylor Finlay
RB Lyndsay Ingram
WR Cooks Roberts Hansen
LT Tunsil
LG McCray, Scharping
C Britt Cabral
RG Howard, Toner
RT Cannon, Heck
TE Akins Brown Izzo Warring Quessenberry
WR Moncrief, Eriksen, Coulter
SLOT Cobb, Moore, Coutee
3RB D. Johnson

DE Omenihu, Mercilus, Greenard, Ejiofor, Martin
DT Collins Dunn Blacklock
NT Hall Taylor
DE Lawson, Jenkins, Rivers
LB Cunningham, Davis, Hall
LB Kirksey Thomas
LB Grugier-Hill Pierre-Louis
CB Roby Hargreaves Crossen Armstrong
CB King, Mitchell John Reid
SLOT Thomas, Smith
FS Brooks AJ Moore
SS Reid Murray

I know there are a few names missing here, and I’ve probably misappropriated some players to wrong positions etc, looking to understand some of the signings better. Am I right in thinking we are short of a starting outside CB ideally?

Lawson is starting. So is King. I'm not so sure Lovie doesn't reconvert Johnson back to corner. Merci is probably going to be a situational pass rusher. I didn't see Greenard in the depth charter

Brandon Cooks?

Did they cut or move DJ from the RB room?

I’ve got him at RB3
We have a load of RBS milling around the bottom of the roster, actually.
I think if the Texans put out a depth chart, DJ would be at starting QB.
In all actuality, we don't know for sure how Lindsay and Ingram would perform today on the field (due to injury); maybe that should also play a role in setting up the depth chart.

Yeah, I guess you are right.

My main concern in wanting to get a depth chart together is to understand what the competition looks like on the D.

We have 3 LB positions and a host of new names that I don’t really understand their roles. The MLB needs to be really good in coverage right? Because he’s going to drop back with the safeties when the read is pass. I assume that is not where Cunningham plays if I’m right?

At CB I read that King thrives as a slot CB playing zone, Roby plays man well. We are likely playing zone this year, though.

Im hoping to get my head around some of these competitions before looking ahead to who we draft and then keeping an eye on training camp. It’s never been this confusing before!

3. Extraordinary Linebackers
The WILL and MIKE (weakside linebacker and middle linebacker, respectively) are arguably the most important players in Coach Smith's defense. Smith played linebacker at Tulsa and started his NFL career as a linebackers coach, so it's only appropriate that he has helped shape superstars at the position. Throughout his career, Smith has emphasized athleticism and versatility at the positon. Lovie Smith coached linebackers tallied 352 passes defended over 18 seasons, which was only surpassed by two teams over that period. linebackers have earned 18 Pro Bowl selections under Coach Smith.

I'm still studying the new guys.
Haven't got to the LBs yet.

I went back to sleep, LOL, still need my coffee.
At any rate, I think Mitchell and Roby start at CBs and King in the slot.
These guys can all play man when the Texans use cover 2 or cover 3.
I don't know if they need to be in Tampa all that much.
(Like I said, I still need to take a look at the LBs).

I'm hoping an opt out guy falls to the 3rd rd CB Tay Gowan or Kelvin Joseph.

Then you can move King to FS.

A secondary of Mitchell/Gowan/Roby in the slot at CB

With Reid/King at safety would be much better than what they had last yr. I doubt Molden falls to the3rd, but I would pick him in the 3rd if the other 2 guys are gone and play Roby/Mitchell outside and Molden in the slot.

One good thing about our 3rd rounder is that it is a high 3rd.
I can see us taking a Safety if the right guy is there.
WR and CB are also on the radar.
Still, there is merit in BPA if a stand out type is available - at this point, beggars can't be choosers.

I'm thinking CB/Edge/S whoever is the BPA at those positions. Luckily the strength of the draft matches up very well with those positions.

I don't know where he would fit in our D backfield but CB Shakur Brown is an interesting prospect as well.

JMO, I don't think any CB drafted in the third will be good enough in his rookie year to prompt these moves.

1st and second rounders sometimes don't work out either but with all these guys around him he can take a year to adjust and learn.

I know, but steelb want to play him "now" while the whole secondary is pretty much set, IMO.
Any new draftee would do better sit and learn , and maybe come in with the Dime package, or when there's an injury.

Unless the Texans trade Roby away.

I dunno wonder how many rookies, both drafted and undrafted, make the DC for the starting season game ?

Unfortunate but true.
Unless you can get a hot prospect in the first round at Corner, chances are he will need some time to adjust.
This is where not having a first or high second round pick bites.
We got lucky with Justin Reid - I hope we get lucky with our third rounder this go round also - chances of getting a starter in the third round is low so perhaps Texans need to concentrate on a rotational type position where odds of getting a good one are better.
And just hope a higher rated guy slides down enough to affect a trade.

I hope the team focus is on defense. Doesn't look like we will be scoring a lot of points this year.

:coffee:

The team is going to suck.

What I hope is they can find 5 guys that are above avg starters out of all of the FA moves and the draft. I'm hoping they get 3 guys in FA and I'm betting on Lindsay/Pierre/Roberts that are above avg players. In the draft, if they traded all of their draft picks to move up and draft 2 guys that could really play I would be very happy.

Hopefully the new OL coach can develop our younger lineman in the fine art of blocking someone / anyone.

I think we picked up some serviceable running backs. Our only hope is an improved running game.

And a decent pass rush wouldn't hurt. I was disappointed in Blacklock last year. Maybe this year?

New coaches on defense can only help. Right ???

Speaking of depth - the elephant in the room is qb.
I think they will likely try for one in the 4th - cobble both 4ths together perhaps if a half decent one is still on the board.
If a D starting prospect slips down to 67 you have to take him.
Leave the qb until the 4th.

Can't disagree that this is a possibility. But still, if Kellen Mond falls to us at 67, I would have to think the Texans would seriously consider taking him. I would not trade up for him, but if he falls, I think I'd take him.

I see Mond has leap-frogged Kyle Trask. I would consider him also - unless they get lucky and their guy they hoped would fall lands in their lap.

I've changed my mind on Trask. I believe Culley will bring a Reid offense to the Texans, requiring a duel threat QB. This is also the reason I've backed off Mills. After the top 5 QB's are off the board, Mond is the best QB to fit this system.

A read option offense will fail and Culley wont be here in 3 yrs. Do not want Mond
