Texans trading for QB Ryan Finley

I don’t mind either, but when you don’t have to, why do it? They could have yanked him off waivers for nothing.
I think they would rather sacrifice late round draft position than their waiver positioning. Could still get a surprise addition at some point this offseason that would contribute to the team far more than the difference in draft positioning. Plus they keep the rookie contract.

Waiver positioning doesn't change. They stay at 3 from now until after the 3rd week of the regular season.

You may have set a record for making excuses in one paragraph. I'm talking about the "Nightmare on Kirby Drive" AND why BB just spent $195MM to fix his weak ask roster. What part of the $195MM are you having difficulty understanding? Maybe I can help.
LOL. Again?

You are grasping at straws to promote your agenda. You continue to refuse to use logic and look at the entire situation. You keep moving and changing what you are “talking about”.

Patriots came into the season with the third most cap space just behind Jets and Dolphins. That’s why they are spending so much. I am no cap genius but the 13.2% has to go somewhere since it ain’t on the GOAT QB.

Patriots are average drafters. I expect the Texans to be about the same.

Beats me then... other than the rookie contract piece
If I interpret the waiver rules correctly, the team claiming the player off waivers assumes that player's contract. This being the case, the only thing which makes sense is if the Texans thought another team was going to make an offer to trade and the Texans outbid that team.

Everyone assumes that Texans management are totally clueless when it is we, the fans, who actually are. We know nothing of what is going on behind the scenes.

Another possibility revolves around timing.

After this trade, the Bengals have two QB's and they seem to have adequate cap space. The news media speculated that Finley was going to be released. But when? The Bengals may very well have carried him into camp and released him later.

It's to any teams advantage, especially when in a rebuild, to have players, especially QB's, signed and participating in all the pre-camp programs. The Texans obviously liked this QB and wanted him on board sooner rather than later.

Jimmy Johnson once said if a player is smart I can work with him. If he is dumb then I have to cut him.

It's been nice talking to you.

I think it’s been common knowledge that Finley is smart.
My man’s not simply smart.
He’s the smartest man in the draft according to the Wonderlic test.
Finley scored a 43, which wasn’t simply the highest score amongst quarterbacks, but overall as well as far as we can see.

If you can’t adjust your opinion when you are shown facts you didn’t have or refuse to acknowledge that’s on you. Go find yourself an echo chamber and feel smart.

I respect your right to be wrong.

Glad to see Finley coming on board.....bummed that it looks like McCarron is going to be playing elsewhere in 2021.

McCarron never really got a chance to play or develop as a QB1. I think the Bengals stuck with Dalton far too long and it cost McCarron his opportunity. He went to Buffalo and got injured early. He was competing against Peterman and Allen.....so he wasn't really the option. Got traded to the Raiders where he backed up Carr......then to Houston where he backed up Watson.

I'd really like to see him land in SF where Shanahan's offense would be taylor made to his skill-set and Garappolo's penchant for injury might give him a great opportunity for success. The Cowboys, Dolphins and Redskins might be another landing spot. I wouldn't mind seeing the Texans giving him an opportunity to compete in this camp if Watson is traded.

Anyhow, good luck McCarron.

pretty much everyone is an average drafter. It expresses itself as parity in the NFL. face it. the pool of draft picks is average at best. Well coached teams that string together several above average seasons don’t get high draft picks so they enter the yearly crapshoot at more of a disadvantage.

I think a big part of that is getting the player on the current contract , not a newly negotiated one that could be significantly higher.
I believe this is the basis for the trade. I'm pretty sure that Nick Caserio knows exactly what the waiver guidelines are, better than everyone on this board - Combined. You can also be assured that he knows more about what other GM's are doing than everyone on this board - Combined.
Finley is a 3rd year player on a contract that will pay him $850K this year, the vet minimum. The minimum contract for any player is $675K. We have to swap a 6th round for a 7th round and pay an additional $175K more than we would for a rookie. And we get a player who started 4 games and has experience and potential. The expense is minimal and the benefit is maximum.
Depending on the DW-4 situation, this could be a great signing. I just hope we don't have to find out.

just to clarify, minimum is based on years vets have:

Trading for a guy who at best is a 3rd string QB was just dumb. You can find guys on the street like that any day of the week.
Poor guy.
He survived the cut, only to be traded and then cut.
On the bright side, this may allow another team to pick him up for their TC; one just never knows.
Good luck to Mr. Finley.

BTW, is this the first official cut of a player that NC brought in?

@Texian gonna have fun with this one lol
Well I did say Nick didn't know what he was doing. Let's see, Nick gave up draft capital to trade for Finley, who was going to be released anyways. Restructured contracts to pay him and now before the first OTAs he cut him. So we got that going for us Texans fans. This really doesn't upset me because you knew this crapola coming. It's going to get worse. No joking this is a real circus. This Fustercluck is just getting started. :)

This qualifies as a nothing burger transaction.

NC has already gone on record about how little he values those bottom round picks.

Much the same as undrafted FA.

NC made a roster upgrade, plain and simple. There will be many more. Don't get too attached to any one player.

We will find out how he feels about draft picks in the top rounds when he has some. :D

If this year is any indication Nick C. doesn't give spit about draft picks especially late ones.
Late ones is correct.

Early ones, he cares about.

I just really dont think that changing out a 6th rd pick for a 7th rd pick is a big deal when you have the QB issues the Texans have.

I do have an issue using a 2022 4th rd pick to trade up for Collins. I want as many picks as possible in the deep 2022 draft.

Finley being such a brilliant mind, came in, had one good look around and said GMTFOOH.
Actually, here’s the following exchange:

Team: Finley, here’s your playbook on iPad.

Finley: Duhhhhhhhh!!!

Team: Duhhhh, gave you the wrong item. Give me the iPad and here’s your Pink Slip. Now get to steppin and good luck in the future.
