Texans trading for QB Ryan Finley

As I said in another thread, I’m absolutely dumbfounded as to why we’re giving away draft picks for players about to be cut. Some instances I get it where you don’t want to compete with other teams for their services, but the Texans are doing this for nobodies.

And don’t cut players have to pass through waivers? If so, the Texans are 3rd on the waiver list with just Jacksonville and the Jets ahead of them. I doubt either are making a claim for Ryan freaking Finley.

I really don’t get what’s going on here other than part of the team making all of the horrible deals alongside OB is still here, and he still has a lot of sway.

Texans traded their 7th RD pick for TE Izzo. If it's 7th RD it would have to be a 2022.

Ryan Finley isn’t getting cut after all. On Friday, the Bengals agreed to trade the quarterback to the Texans in an exchange of late-round picks. The Bengals will move up ~30 spots in the swap as they send Finley and a 7th-round pick to the Texans for a sixth-round pick (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). Rather than their original sixth-rounder, the Texans are sending the choice that originally belonged to Miami.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots' unprecedented free-agent splurge at tight end has had a trickle-down effect, with the club trading fourth-year tight end Ryan Izzo to the Houston Texans on Thursday.
The Patriots received a 2022 seventh-round pick in exchange, according to the official NFL transaction notice.

Patriots had some pretty bad drafts the last 5 years. It's beginning to look like their Director of Player Personnel may have been a BIG reason why.
 
If the Izzo and Finley deals are any indicators of what to expect from the Draft, be afraid, be very afraid.

Not losing sleep. I’m just trying to understand the mentality of our new GM. I know back end of the draft guys aren’t going to move the needle, but neither is Ryan Finley. And again, if he was about to be cut, wouldn’t he then have to clear waivers? The Jags wouldn’t make a claim. Not really sure if the Jets would or not but they’ve got 3 QBs on their roster, and they could draft whoever is after Lawrence. Even if it is backend of the draft, why are you giving them away when you can get this guy for nothing?

Because the Texans aren't very bright? :confused:

They have a history of doing inscrutable things, it's their norm.

Some reports are he was cut and it was a signing. Others say late 6th round pick which would allow us to not have to deal with waivers. Seeing if he was cut someone else would was him too. Even if just a camp body.

Caserio is used to being near the bottom of the waiver wire. He'll get used to being at the top in a year or 2.

Yes. Waivers runs throughout the league year from the first business day after the SB through the end of the regular season. From the first business day after the SB until the day after week 3, the order is the same as the draft order as it would be without trades.

Players with less than 4 years are subject to waivers, except after the trade deadline when all players are subject to waivers.

No, I mean the Patriot team that just went 7 -9. Here is exactly what I mean. The Patriots in the first 48 hours of free agency spent $195MM on 11 free agents. This spending spree was a direct result of the Patriots having the weakest roster in Belichick's history as Pats HC. The weak roster is a direct result of the Pats having the worst drafts over a 5 year period according to PFF. The Director of Player Personnel the last 5 years was Nick Caserio. Capisce?

You moved the goal posts.

And are we talking about the team that went 7-9 with a QB who is half of what he was due to injury? A QB that threw twice as many interceptions as touchdowns? Was it the same team that had the aforementioned QB who failed to pass for over 100 yards in 4 games? Did this same team have more players sit out than most other teams due to COVID? The same team that went to the playoffs the prior year? The same team that lost the GOAT QB in the off season? Which that GOAT QB made them trade the backup QB the team planned to have takeover? Which was the same QB the Texans were eyeing but was snatched away?

Are we talking about THAT team?

I see Caserio must be writing the next installment of "The Purge....Texans 2021". This purge won't be completed until Watson and Tunsil have been moved. The last of the team leadership out the door. This will new team leaders to surface.

I think the Patriots went twice and won both times.
2016 and 2018.

I see their last 5 drafts as mediocre.

They certainly didn't win in 2016 because of that year draft class.

In 2018, the 3 draft classes (2016-18) only contributed a small part.

BB and Brady were the majorly major reasons the Patriots had had such success.

At any rate, we don't really know how much of a role NC played in those successes so we can't really tell one way or another; my thinking.

We just have got to wait and see how things pan out.

You may have set a record for making excuses in one paragraph. I'm talking about the "Nightmare on Kirby Drive" AND why BB just spent $195MM to fix his weak ask roster. What part of the $195MM are you having difficulty understanding? Maybe I can help.
 
I don't mind trading a late round pick to secure a young QB that the team thinks they can develop still on the rookie contract. Finley was thrown to the wolves his first two years in the league on a bad team given spot starts against some of the best defenses in the league. Of course he's not gonna look great.. but still made plays and was part of arguably biggest upset of last season. Add that he's mobile and probably a better fit in the system Culley will try to install and it's a low risk high reward trade if a solid backup/spot starter is gained out of the deal.

I don’t mind either, but when you don’t have to, why do it? They could have yanked him off waivers for nothing.
