Texans GM Interviews...

I would never use the word smart and Cal McNair in the same sentence. I don't care if he's got a degree from Rice.

Daddy probably had to buy a new library for him to get that degree.

He might be smart in whatever kind of degree he got, but he's pretty fricking dumb when it comes to making football decisions. It's why I can't get all that excited about the future of the Texans, because we have such a dumbass owner.

Hopefully we'll luck out and a good decision will be made by the Texans despite themselves.

This is exactly where I'm at.

I so can’t wait for this **** to be over...tired of hearing/reading about all this from folks who have no more of a clue about what’s going on off Kirby than my 6 year old.

Ready for this forum to return to something other than what it’s become lately...which is basically lipstick alley.
If you are including me with your 6 year old's access to information, I will just say that the knowledge I am relating comes straight from inside the Texans organization. But seeing how this is being received, in the future I will think more than twice before ever relaying such information to this MB.

Man, I'd like a FO that has Dorsey (GM / Currently a Consultant with Philadelphia), Wolf (Asst GM / Currently a Consultant with NE), Highsmith (Director of Player Personnel / Currently a Personnel Executive with Seattle), Brandon Sosna (Salary Cap & Contract Analyst / Currently with Cincinnati). All have worked with Dorsey.

The Texans have got to hit on their next 3 drafts to really turn this team around and get their cap situation under control. I could see this group as more than capable of getting the Texans back on track. Toss a solid HC like Joe Brady into the mix and I think this has the makings of finally becoming a very successful organization 18 years later.

Opt quick question: what has Highsmith done? I see you’re pretty high on him.

Texans have their next general manager candidate in their sights.
Houston native and Buffalo Bills director of pro personnel Malik Boyd will interview for the vacant general manager job for the Texans according to the Houston Chronicle.
Boyd has been with the Bills since he was hired in 2017. Previously he was with the Cardinals. In Arizona, he worked his way up from area scout to regional scout and finally to assistant director of pro scouting. He was the 2014 NFC Scout of the Year as awarded by the Fritz Pollard Alliance. He got into scouting in 2003 where he was a scouting assistant with the Indianapolis Colts.
Directors of player personnel are sometimes responsible for contract negotiations with free agents as well as negotiations of extensions. They also have all the scouts who observe players from the other 31 teams in the NFL report to them. It would stand to reason Boyd's recommendation could have led to the Bills adding their key offseason addition Stefon Diggs.
Boyd went to high school at M. B. Smiley High School, which is now North Forest High School. He then attended Southern University, where he played football and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Psychology. He would play one season in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings. He would play in all 16 games in 1994 totaling 35 tackles and one interception as a defensive back.
There are two heavy connections that have Boyd on the radar of the Texans. Boyd's defensive coordinator in Minnesota in his one year in the NFL was Tony Dungy. Rod Graves was the general manager in Arizona when Boyd was a scout.

Dungy and Graves are both advisors to Cal McNair and the Texans in their search for a new head coach and general manager.
ESPN's Louis Riddick and current Texans director of player personnel Matt Bazirgan have interviewed for the general manager job already. TexansDaily.com has reported that the Texans have had at least informal contact with long-time GM John Dorsey as well.

OK here's some more stuff on Boyd and I like what I'm seeing so far.
It would appear that the man knows something about evaluating football talent and certainly has the experience in that area.
Lots of stuff GMs do is PR stuff and who cares if he's experienced at that, let the owners handle the BS functions with the public & city hall, etc.

Boyd has another connection that is even more direct and knowledgeable about the position he is interviewing for in one Mr. Brian Gaine. Gaine is now the Senior Personnel Advisor for the Bills, Boyd and Gaine work together. What do you think Gaine's advice to Boyd would be about joining the dumpster fire known as the Houston Texans?

To buy a Scott pack from Houston Fire Department.

Looks like the Texans noticed the Bills are doing something right. And, he’s a Houston native. Nice!

I've been advocating for Malik as he has been a good evaluator of talent and smart, but this situation may be tough for a first time GM. Cool thing about him is he has always been objective and cool under pressure. We grew up basically around the corner from each other, hung out in the same clicks, went to same the HS and graduated in 1989. We also both ended up at SU (Go Jags!). I think I would still prefer Dorsey. Anyone have any insight as to why Eliot Wolf is not being mentioned outside of this forum or why he hasn't been chosen for previous GM positions?

Assuming Mr Boyd is a married man I'd be willing to bet his wife told him if the Texans offer you that GM job back home in Houston, you better jump on that offer as fast as you can so we can get out of this cold azz place up here in western NY and get back home to Houston.
And also I think the removal of Bill O'Brien from the Texans organization effectively eliminated Brian Gains nemesis from the scene down here.

If you like Malik then you should hope he doesn't get the Texans job if Easterby is still here.

If Dorsey gets the job then he will probably either bring Wolf/Highsmith/Sean Jones with him. This would be a good thing. The Texans need to hire an experienced guy like Dorsey because there's no time to learn on the job. If they get the wrong guy the Texans will become the Browns.

Probably because Cal has no idea of what he's doing and is listening to Easterby is why Wolf wont even get an interview.

It is a process of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. (A definition of Stupidity) Only this time Cal is doing the same thing as Dad did only much worse than Dad did for the 20 years prior.

Stuff on Eliot Wolf

Three years ago widely regarded as sooner than later to be a GM

Went to Browns as an assistant GM, but left in Jan 2020

Currently, a consultant with the Patriots (and not on the hot list I posted on #268 in this thread)

I've maintained that as long as our Patriot's Pastor doesn't worm his way into the GM position I don't care because it's an upgrade. Looking at Dorsey though, I have to add a second to that list.

Around here, that doesn't mean much. He could be gone tomorrow for all we know. Cal ain't playing. He's got his gangsta hat on.

If I were to make a bet (unless I missed something), Cal has a colorful hat with a propeller, and outside of "I'm the king!" tantrums it's Mrs McNair that's in charge.

If I was going to hire a 1st time GM it would be this guy.

He's well connected around the league.

Not just that, he is still young (38) and has done everything except being a full-time GM.

About the only question is why has Wolff, seemingly feel out favor?

(which may or may not say darn thing about his ability to be an Excellent GM)

Young at 38 but with over 20 years sitting in an NFL draft room. Packers went with Gutekunst because they felt Wolf was to young to be a GM. Departed Cleveland when Browns cleaned house after deciding to go with analytics as their primary tool for scouting. Belichick must've have thought Wolf had something to bring to the table to hire him as a consultant. A win win for both.

All that said I don't think Wolf would want to have anything to do with being the GM of the Texans for all the obvious reasons. He turned down several offers to be a GM when he was with the Packers. So it is clear he picks and chooses wisely.

I enjoy this interview, especially past the 4min mark.

Our GM (far from great) and any talent he could manage to hang on to kept us in the black, and even managed to land an exceptional QB in spite of the power struggle above and below. Owner and coach finally got their "Patriots" way though - a couple talents, broke and no draft picks. I think this video is the example of what a terminal GM can do very quickly compared to what a relatively competent one can sustain against adversity. I want someone with enough experience to realize that there is no such thing as "my way", which is why I like Peters ... he saw winning in different ways.

I didn't have Malik on my radar, but dude has a great line of history and connections. He was part of the Colts build that saw a super bowl, part of the Cardinals build that made the super bowl and has helped construct this young and up and coming Bills team. I am impressed and love that the team has found him (I imagine Dungy had a lot to do with that)

I was fan of his as a short time player before injury. No thought on him as a GM.

A Dorsey protégé. Actually Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith worked for Dorsey in GB and Cleveland. I think the Texans biggest job, land Dorsey......Wolf and Highsmith probably come along with him, unless they're given a GM opportunity by another team.
