Pick 40

Should the Texans take a running back at pick 40 ? Do you think they would pick up J.K. Dobbins ? What do yall think ?

I wouldn’t take a running back unless all the top OL and WR are all gone. Hell, I’d rather take a DB if a good one was still on the board at 40. It’s no secret that we need all the help we can get on that side of the ball!

The defense has lost us all the big games since Watson’s arrival. His breakout game in 2017 against NE, the shootout in Seattle, the MNF Game in NOLA where it should have been the game winning TD from Watson to Stills, only to have the defense let the saints march down the field for that last second FG. I’m sure there were others that I’ve forgotten. Defense has been ridiculously bad for the past three, going on four years. It’s about damn time to address it!

I wouldn't even take a guard or WR @ #40 as you can get a decent guard or WR in the middle/later rounds.
After those 3, I would be looking at DE or IDL.

Our offense, despite it's inconsistency, has the potential to be really good if coaches could call an effective game more frequently. I agree on taking a solid DB at pick 40 if alot of the WR talent is already gone. I too feel that our defense has given up the lead at the end of games several times leading to alot of heartbreaking losses. Or simply not showing up like after the 1st quarter in the play-off loss to KC.

No, years ago Barry Sanders and great guys like were required to have a good team. It is a passing league now.

I'll jog your memory. Don't forget the lovely 72 yard drive the defense gave up in Philly to allow the last second FG to lose the game. All this after Watson and the O had scored on back to back drives to take the lead.

Negative on a RB at #40. Has to be a CB or a pass rusher IMO. This defense needs a player that makes the opposing offense go "oh crap, that guy" The Texans don't have that anymore. Maybe Watt still has a little bit of that left in him, but not like before.

First 3 picks or so should all be to shore up the defense unless somebody has an insane drop in the draft. For better or worse it’s a whole new offense now we need to rebuild the defense. Key thing though is let Weaver do the picking, normally I wouldn’t be in favor of a rookie DC picking but OB has been to hands off of the defense for me to trust him on it and sink or swim it’s Weaver’s defense so let him build it.

RC is still apart of this team as a assistant head coach. So he can continue to draft for the defensive talent.

My current expectation that the Texans won't draft at 40. Either there is another veteran that will be another meh at best option or Trader BOB will move all over the board (mostly down) because he has only a handful of "his guys" that he wants.

I am not against RB as most the board appears, but is there really an RB scheduled to be there that is a better prospect than whatever pass interior or outside that should be there.

Landry on 610 thinks the Texans should go RB. He claims a stud RB is what will help improve this team the most. I guess that also means he has little faith in David Johnson.

If the Texans go RB at 40, then it brings up even MORE speculation on the Hopkins trade, not to mention the Duke acquisition as well.

I'm hoping we go anywhere on defense.

If the Texans really want their running game to be special and I'm pretty sure this is OB's dream, then you have to have the beef up front to help make this happen. Must have a thumper that can slam it between the tackles with some authority.....oh, the Texans are missing this as well.

I'm not sure there's more than one guy like that in this draft. There could be another difference maker on defense. But I couldn't say there is for sure with conviction.

What the Texans should look for are players that have skill sets the team lacks. A pure speed rusher screaming off the edge. A press corner that can slow a top WRs release. An interior pass rusher that can keep a QB from stepping up in the pocket. If the Texans could find one player like that in this draft, they'll be lucky.

The Texans probably shouldn't draft at #40. They need as many picks as possible so they can luck out on a few. I have zero confidence in O'Brien's ability to determine talent. But anyone can get lucky. Tom Brady was a shot in the dark, the Patriots had 3 QBs at the time. But they also had a couple of comp picks in the 6th and said "What the hell?"

If someone could tell me exactly what type of offense Billy Oh was planning on for 2020 and beyond, I could make a case for a RB. Is he sticking with his version of Ground Bill? Run up the middle when they least expect it. And most expect it. And every other time. Or, does he plan on Buttchin to the Post, where all 4 WRs run deep routes, and a frisky RB circles out of the backfield yelling "Look out, Deshaun!." If one only knew what goes on in the calculating brain of O'Brien.

Edge rusher, with CB as plan B. With the disruption of the preseason, rookies will not receive the training they normally would. So for a rookie to make the greatest impact, it needs to be a position that doesn't require coaching. With an edge rusher, you put him in a three point stance and tell him to go after the QB.

Zack Baun if there, but I doubt it. So 40B is Julian Okwara and 40C is Terrall Lewis.

1) What if the Cards were keeping Johnson on the bench because he really is an injury waiting to happen ?
2) What if these little smurf receivers are as fragile and concussion prone as we fear

Possibility .... parlay #40 into 2 picks and get Claypool and Dillard .... I've said it before, I know ... but it's the safest thing I see .... they aren't fragile !

This SHOULD have been the plan initially before making the horrible trade for David Johnson. Now, picking a RB in the 2nd round would not make sense.

Based on DJ and DJ's 2019 production....there's no way the Texans go into 2020 thinking the running game is a finished product, regardless of OB stating that he's got his horses. Dillon will be there in RD3 and possibly in RD4. It really hurts losing that other RD2 pick. Maybe Texans could trade back in RD3 and gain an additional RD4 or RD5 pick.

I completely agree we will draft another RB but as I said it will not be in the 2nd round.

What if Cooks catches 75 balls and DJ returns to his previous form.

Who knows what BOB will do?? No matter what he does I'm sure it'll be BOLD and we should be excited about that. I also hope everyone here is ready to give BOB the 3 years he's asking for (I feel Steelb posted that into existence) to just let this play out. In all seriousness I hope D is targeted, fast edge guy but who knows what BOB will do when this talent starts dropping down....

Steel, you're right .... I am trying to preserve my enthusiasm, by reacting to O'Brien's plan ! He is in a "win now mode" ! It began by missing Dillon, (intentional misspelling)), panicking, realizing that talent 'evaluation' was another tool that was not in his bag, thus relying on the opinion of others, as to who was actually talented .... and then, paying whatever price they said it was worth ! Each transaction seemed to dwarf, or at least top the previous one. They became a string of desperation moves, each increasing the spin rate of our downward spiral. O'Brien, now sensing the inevitable, cannot be bothered by trifles, like drafting as many good young defensive players as possible -to balance the team's future. He sees this as his Swann Song .... so he has to do whatever he can, to be .... The First and Only Head Coach to Bring a SuperBowl ring to Houston ! I dislike him, I dislike his coaching style, I dislike his array of talent acquisitions, but at this point, I'm trying to help him bring us our "One Brief Shining Moment" ! and that, is the method to my madness !!

I’m attaching a link to help my fellow Texans fans prepare for O’Brien’s first pick ever as a General Manager.

So far my favorite is “why in thunderation”. I used it only once in my life but I might take it off the shelf next week.

Will be perfect for when OB takes Tua at #40 and trades Watson for a 4th round pick and a backup Guard on a toxic contract.

taking a RB in the 2nd round is tantamount to having a special needs GM in control.
We knew this dude rode the short bus long before he took over as GM , all we had to do was watch his multiple offense do multiples of nothing.

Then he cemented it when he screwed up the Clowney trade.

Again when he traded the farm for Tunsil without an extension.

Once again he traded away the best WR in the game with multiple years left on his deal …. for a has been and 17 draft spots in the second round.

And one more time when he let the defensive anchor walk (Reader) …. woohoo Comp pick ?!

I'd narrow it down further ….

The OL has had plenty of draft capital spent on it the past 3 years …. two first round tackles among them. If we're drafting an OT now , last years #1 pick was a mistake.

I'd love a corner …. but without a pass rush , its pointless.

Its either a pass rusher or a pass rusher …. no matter who's on the back end , they're getting beat when QB's have all weekend to pick the secondary apart..

Looking at corners in the 3rd.

I agree ^ no running back 40th pick. Defense like pass rusher, CB, OLB and on offense WR, OT.

I expect pick 40 to be a player that is projected to go mid to late 3rd round. If you want to predict who OB is going to draft, you should probably look there. Personally id like to go DE or CB.
