Hopkins traded to Cardinals?

https://theathletic.com/1678979/202...on-texans-trade-deandre-hopkins-to-cardinals/

How should Watson feel right now?

Reiss: Frustrated. But just wait until it’s Week 11 and new No. 1 wide receiver Will Fuller has already missed three games.

Jones: Confused. What’s the message O’Brien is sending to his team — let alone his franchise quarterback — right now? If I’m Watson, I’m wondering about my long-term future there — and if I even want one with O’Brien.

Nguyen: Abandoned.

Kapadia: Dejected. The guy has put the team on his back for years, and depending on what else the Texans do, he’ll be going into next season with one of the worst groups of wide receivers. More than anything, Watson has to know that O’Brien is going to continue to make bad decisions that will hurt the roster around him.

Pompei: Watson should be disappointed. It’s going to be more difficult for him to become the quarterback he wants to be without Hopkins. He might never have another wide receiver in his career who is as talented as Hopkins.

Trask: Disappointed, mad, sad and more, but he then needs to shake it off (credit to Taylor Swift) and move forward, understanding that it is part of the business of football — an unfortunate part.

Johnson hasn’t come close to replicating his All-Pro 2016 season — or living up to the three-year, $39 million deal he signed in 2018. He now joins a backfield with Duke Johnson under contract through 2021 as 2019 leading rusher Carlos Hyde faces free agency. What’s your guess as to what David Johnson’s role will be in Houston?

Bordow: I can’t speak to Houston’s offense, but for David Johnson to make an impact, he has to be a much more decisive runner than he was in 2019. There was a belief among some Cardinals players that Johnson became shy of contact once he got paid. Johnson can still be an effective receiver out of the backfield, but whether he again becomes the player he was in 2016 depends on whether his mindset changes.

Reiss: The Texans believe David Johnson is a bounce-back candidate. They felt the same way about Hyde and got a career year out of him. I expect Johnson to take on a similar role, receiving 200-plus carries while Houston looks to target both of its running backs in the passing game.

Nguyen: David Johnson will likely take a majority of the snaps but Duke Johnson will play a significant role. My guess is a 60-40 split. Their skill sets are similar, but David Johnson is a much better runner.

Jones: I expect he’ll be their feature back. Good for him for getting a fresh start and a place to be the lead back again.

Kapadia: My guess is he’ll be among the league leaders in touches next season. If you’re going to do a deal like this, you’re signaling that Johnson is going to be a huge part of the offense.

Pompei: I’m sure the Texans believe they can get something out of him the Cardinals have failed to get in recent seasons. That’s usually how these types of moves are justified.

Man, I am so sorry to hear the bad news guys! Having lived in Houston for 20+ years I’ve posted here from time-to-time, but I am a Raider fan. Still, I like the Texans, and this was a terrible trade. I have the advantage of not being emotionally tied to the team, so I’d like to think I have a clear view of this trade, and the Texans got fleeced. I can only think that maybe BOB knows something about Hopkins we don’t, but I seriously doubt it. We’ll see. Unfrickin’ believable.
A blast from the past, what's up Cerberus ? Miss you man ! Hope things are going OK in S. Carolina.
Yea all of us around here are dubstruck by this trade !

What really hurts is this is likely a cap decision based on the awful deals they cut Nick Martin and Mercilus.
They need Tunsil, Watson and a CB. But OB has shown he isn’t capable of scheming a WR open, Hop could catch it without being open and Fuller can run past anyone for 6 games a year. Now they don’t have anyone for the other 10 games.
Hop and Johnson's contract pretty much cancel each other no cap space gained for 2020.

DeAndre Hopkins says it's "nothing personal" about his exit from the Texans
Patrick D. Starr

Hopkins gave Houston Fox 26s Mark Berman a statement regarding his trade to the Cardinals.

“I would like to say Houston helped create not just a football player," Hopkins said. "But a man. Houston gave me opportunities in life that I would have never got in a lot of places to better myself. I want to thank the city of Houston for always supporting the organization no matter what happened and supporting us players through the ups and down."

Hopkins continued, "Houston, always know there will be love in my heart despite this situation. It’s a business there’s nothing personal about it. I gave it all I had. I wouldn’t take anything back. I don’t regret anything that’s happened so far in my career being a Houston Texan."

"Now it’s a new chapter in my life," he said. "I’m looking forward to and very excited to being part of the Arizona Cardinals. All of the Houston fans that loved DeAndre Hopkins, make sure they still support DeAndre Hopkins."

Based on what exactly? OBJ was just as good if not better & he fetched a 1st and a 2nd...but he was also younger, faster and more dynamic than Nuk. + he had just been locked up by the Giants for 5 years/90 mill at the time of the trade so The Browns "thought" they were going to get him happy and paid where they wouldn't have to do anything. Nuk will want a new contract either this year or the next & he'll want to be paid 20 per like all the top WR's. All of that factors in why it was slightly different.

Yep,

It looks like GM'S don't value Nuk as much as posters here do.

In other words I want a new contract.

stupidest trade in the history of trades

This is being on the Browns side of the Brock Osweiller trade and trading the best WR in the league to do it just to lick up all that terrible contract

Smith made bad moves... but IMO he never made moves that simply makes no sense at the time.

I will try to make sense of the trade for you

The McNairs like their money and Nuk wanted an extension, so BOB cut the best deal he could get.

The Texans recognized that they would have to renegotiate Hopkins’ contract at some point if they wanted to keep him, but they’re prioritizing new deals for Deshaun Watson and offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil, Yahoo’s Charles Robinson tweets. Hopkins had three years remaining on his team-friendly contract, so the Texans felt that a fresh deal was premature. Meanwhile, they see opportunities to replenish at wide receiver via the draft, as well as some options for trades. All in all, the Texans viewed the Hopkins trade as the first step towards a larger plan that will cover them on both sides of the ball.

Another contributing factor: Ongoing friction between Hopkins and head coach Bill O’Brien, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets.

It’s been real. But I can’t support this fuckery. I’m not even upset, BoB is a dumb*** and it shows every single day. I really pRay Deshaun puts in a trade request.

I hope Deshaun does this too

We should have traded Coach BO for the janitor. BO thinks it is what Belichick would have done. That has always been the basis for every one of his absurd decisions.

You truly believe that's the best deal BOB could get for arguably the best receiver in the league at age 27?

McNairs were willing to overpay Nick Martin and Whitney Mercilus, but said NO to Nuk? Tunsil wants to be the highest paid LT in the game, so is he being traded next?

I just wonder where the ownership is and what it could possibly be thinking while O'brien takes his wrecking ball to the teams core talent and most valued players ?

They're behind all of this.

McNairs love their money.

Do you not think they shopped around and took the best deal they could get with a team that was willing to extend Nuk?

There probably weren't any teams that would give up a 1st and extend him.

On the bright side, pick 40 isn't too far from pick 32.

I hope Deshaun does this too
Why even have a team? And do you think O’Brien would get an equal return on value for Watson? After trading away 2 of the best players for peanuts in two consecutive years I don’t think so.

Sickening trade today. Just sickening. Say what you will about Watson (I know you will), Hopkins was the best player on the team. He’s one of the best players in the league. And O’Brien sent him away for pennies on the dollar.

Can't agree with you there. Consider the entire draft Hopkins came from, 2013. All washouts except Hop. Rick drafted talent in about 1 out of 5 picks by my estimation. /derail

Even in the worst scenario Rick Smith was a broken clock; right twice a day. That’s still better than the current GM. The bar isn’t set high on Kirby, yet they still disappoint. What talent has OB drafted and developed? Where is that talent currently?

No honestly at this point I don’t believe they shopped around all that much. I’m sorry but there is no way you will ever convince me that there was no other team willing to beat that offer for Hopkins. Clowney ok yeah I think he was overrated but Hopkins was in no way overrated.

Let’s say for the sake of arguement that they did then and the Cards offer was the best on the table. Just because an offer is the best on the table doesn’t mean it’s not a low ball offer and that you should take it.

Exactly. You say no thanks and keep the disgruntled player until you can deal him for something better or turn his attitude around or pay him.

There is no suggestion that I've seen that says he shopped Nuk to the entire league and was patient about this.

Man that’s just Steel being Steel. This just shows these players are not found of Bill O’Brien like most people think. He just gave one of the best receivers in the league for basically nothing. Something went soar somewhere between those two. I bet it was after getting embarrassed again in the playoffs. So Bill I can show you better than I can tell you. Send his butt to the Cardinals. Lol

I think they shopped Hopkins all over the NFL and 30 other teams thought the Texans were phishing, not fishing. Arizona was the one team that bit , figuring they would be shot down.

O'Brien doesn't wanna share the spotlight with his QBs, his GM and definitely not his star WR. Hearing the Texans associated with "fleeced" should hopefully get to Cal McNair (or Ms. McNair). But as long as they aren't in Baby Bill's spotlight, they're safe. Or else, he'd try to remove them as well somehow.

I'm still trying to understand the transaction that sent Clowney packing but this deal is at a whole different level
in mystification ?
Where's our buddy SteelB because maybe he can explain O'Brien "thinking process" here ?
Right. "He definitely has a vision for this team." Is it the Tennessee Titans? Cos Johnson ≠ Henry, and The Titans have a couple amazing WRs who don't get hurt.

Agreed,

I think they shopped him and took the best offer they could get.

The Cards were the only team willing to give Nuk the extension he wnted and that's what kept his trade value down.
