So..OB is the new official GM..

What say you fans? I must say I'm a little disappointed by the pick. Cal's comments seemed kind of clueless as to what the fans really think of this past season. Tennis anyone?

Groan. Unless he's relieved of his coaching duties, we may as well hope for an expansion team in San Antonio. The Toros are going to suffer for a long, long time.
My sentiments exactly.

Honestly I cant complain about OB the GM - he's done fairly well in talent acquisition , the team was markedly better from training camp to the end of the season - even if it did cost him draft picks.

OB the Head Coach and OC we can complain about ….

Best thing OB could do as GM is fire both the HC and OC.

I said somewhere else that 2-14 might be the best thing that could happen to this franchise because ownership just doesn't comprehend anything else being unsatisfactory / worthy of change.

When 51-7 gets you a promotion , somethings wrong.

Peculiar, given he has only done it for a few months and his "secret" of success was to mortgage the future. Let's see his 3 and 5 year plan. How does he plan to continue to fill out the roster and manage the salary cap given the draft picks he traded away.

I think its undeniable that the team was better at the end of the year than the team that they started with post draft / FA and into training camp.

Yes , they had to give up picks to fill those spots , particularly LT but that's a position you expect to pay for one way or another …. Assuming they resign Tunsil to a reasonable contract , I call it a wash. They'd have had to trade up to the top of the first to get that guy anyhow (and had him on a rookie deal).

We'll have to see how those DB's he acquired play out over the next year or so …. late rounders for guys who contribute is found money when 5th-7th rounders are often cut ….

I just don't like his playcalling , offensive scheme or game / clock management.

Who's going to negotiate contracts and manage the salary cap?
I'm almost certain they will hire someone for that job …. The CBA is so damn complicated you almost have to have a team of accountants and lawyers to keep up with it all.

I have said this all along the thought of OB running this draft alone scared the **** out of me and that was before he traded away the first round pick.

RGV82

Random guy
He is not going to hire a new head coach as he is the head coach/offensive coordinator/general manager. He did not get a contract extension or salary increase.

This just means the same old **** as last year.
What do you mean that he is the offensive coordinator?

RGV82

Random guy
Not the person asked, but O'Brien still calls the plays and (if rumor true) modifies the game plan late in the week after the OC in name Tim Kelly puts everything together.
I sorta figured that is what he meant, but despite "rumors" and speculation of his weekly duties, he is not the offensive coordinator. I thought he was actually saying he had 3 job titles now.

Eh. Trading away future assets to improve the roster today isn't anything impressive to me. Especially when you factor in all of the trades were either at-cost or an overpay. None of the deals, we're looking back and claiming we got a great deal.

When you factor in the horrible Clowney situation, making Martin the 2nd highest paid center, extending Mercilus for that amount after a disappointing season. Then, it looks like we're just going to let Reader walk.

I'm not impressed with BOB the GM.

The only one that comes to mind that is close to such would be Pete Carroll since he's the executive vice president of football operations. Though they have a GM, Carroll has final say over football operations though they do what they can to work in tandem. Basically Carroll works with him and listens to his input, they bounce ideas together but final call is still his if he wishes to assert that authority.

Which ones would you say were an overpay and who could we have gotten for cheaper? The Clowney situation actually wasn't OB's fault because the Texans, Gaine mainly, sat on that till Clowney had all the power. Now I would have played him into the ground like a rental car but if you are worried you are going to have an unhappy player in your locker room it does make sense to move him.

I agree we over payed for Martin though he actually did do decent this year, nothing to make him worth that amount but at the same time did we really want to go center hunting again and rework the Oline again? Mercilus it might have been high looking back but at the beginning of the season we were all talking about how he is going to play himself out of our price range and he still had a better season than Clowney. If he can stay consistent and we get some real secondary help he might have been worth the money.

Reader I see that as a honey badger situation. I think they will make him a fair offer but some team will way overpay him. Not much you can do about that.

Reid has also pretty much had final say in KC since he got there. Granted that is over what players to get and cut but it still is pretty much "I want this person, make it happen." I'm sure Payton and Harbough and the same as does Tomlin I believe. The biggest difference is that BoB is the only one that actually has the GM title as well.

I don't see what all the uproar is about. We all knew that OB was the defacto GM and many were complaining that anyone named GM would just be an OB puppet. Now it's all clearly on OB, no excuses, no more scapegoats
Exactly. I’ve already faced it, he’s going nowhere so this is a good thing. The quicker he can have all the power and all the titles the quicker his ass can take total blame.

I don't want to debate which trades were an overpay, because that gets done repeatedly around here. BUT, are you looking back at any of those deals thinking... "We swindled that team!" My point is, paying for guys at-cost, is not impressive to me.

I agree with you about Clowney. I would have preferred we just keep him for this season then let him walk next offseason. I don't believe he was going to be an unhappy player spreading dissent in the locker room. He's looking for a big payday, and that doesn't help him get paid.

I'm all for re-signing Martin, but there was no reason to pay him that much and that early. I would have rather let him walk in the offseason if that salary was like an ultimatum by him. I think Mercilus has proven he's a complimentary pass-rusher, but can't be the main guy. And I disagree he had a better season than Clowney.

Reader I see that as a honey badger situation. I think they will make him a fair offer but some team will way overpay him. Not much you can do about that.
From what I've been hearing, they won't even make him an offer (a la Kareem Jackson). I think that would be a mistake. But if they do make a fair offer, and someone comes along and overpays, then I agree... Texans shouldn't bite. I don't believe in overpaying for 2-down linemen.

Fair enough but it is impressive to me when the other team knows they can swindle you and you don't let them. Everyone knew we had to have a LT and that we couldn't go into the season with what we had so getting a LT like Tunsil, who despite the penalties only gave up 3 sacks, and getting him at cost is a win in my book. Some times the best you can hope for is to break even. Truthfully teams don't get swindled that much, its why its such a big deal when it does happen, because all these teams have very well educated and highly paid people to help them not get swindled. Expecting OB to do it when he had like a month on the job as GM is asking a bit much not just of him but any GM.

Disagree on both points about Clowney. His poor play this season and the fact he felt he was already worth Mack money tells me he didn't care this was a contract year so yeah I could easily see him trying to stir the pot in the locker room if he felt he had a beef with Ob and the Texans. As far as comparing him and Mercilus.

Numbers don't lie and any way you measure it Mercilus had the better season. Martin I agree with you, only thing that I can possibly think of is that they were trying to make the line as stable as possible. I still wouldn't have given him that contract this soon but if that is the only mistake we can point to in 2-3 years then job well done.

Could be why Olsen was fired, that's just a theory and not one I have anything to back up with just a random thought I had. I don't see them not making him an offer at all, it may not be an offer he likes or even a fair one but I think they will offer something. Despite what some here say OB was not making the calls on contracts last year when Badger and Jackson left. I think he is going to want to give Weaver every weapon he can but again if another team out bids you not much you can do.

We probably disagree on this, but I think Miami DID swindle us for Tunsil. TBH, I'm ok with this, as long as the Texans are able to extend Tunsil. But I think the only way we were able to pry Tunsil from Miami was by making them an offer too good to be true.

For an edge rusher, which is what this team needed desperately after Watt went down, this is the stat I care about the most.

This tells me one guy was ALOT more disruptive than the other guy.

Then we care about different things. I care about how much the guy actually got to someone not how many times he was held up. Clowney wasn't a difference maker for Seattle any more than he was for us. Biggest thing Seattle liked is they got him for literally half price. If they had to pony up the full amount I doubt they would have bit. I'll be very curious to see where he lands this off season and for how much.

Yup, we care about different things.

I think the biggest reason our defense took such a huge nose dive this season was because our front four simply wasn't winning their battles after Watt went down. This would be my #1 priority this offseason.

And I would focus more on improving our ability to stop the air game. Most top shelf QBs these days have a lighting release, Jimmy G, or are duel threat, Mahomes and Jackson, so I'm not sure more QB pressure will help us as much. For the past two seasons any half way decent QB has been able to move the ball up and down the field at will and that was with a much healthier Watt and Clowney. Considering that you are mostly going to face top shelf QBs in the playoffs I would focus more on shutting receivers down.

Least we agree defense is the priority.

"prove it to me that we are national laughingstocks" - should probably have its own thread to keep up with ALL of the jokes about this team.

Lol I guess.
If your criteria for the definition of national laughing stock is so incredibly low that your evidence is a vaguely written and fairly innocuous tweet by a Titans blogger.

Y'all are going to reply with any article you can find that's even remotely critical of the Texans. But to me that's just too vague to meet the definition of national laughing stock.
Show me the articles where someone who is relatively unbiased calls them a joke or embarrassment, or at the very least reaches a level above simple criticism of one of their decisions

I think O'Brien is the only head coach with the actual title of GM to his name. That's probably a combination of Bill's EGO (<---see how massive it is? ha!) and Cal's desire to act like he's not culpable for football operations when it inevitable goes south.

Other HCs do share the GM duties, but none of them actually have the title to their names, iirc.

Still. Many of us has been hoping McNair would hire a football guy & get out of the way. Well, this is what that looks like.
