Texans @ Chiefs - 2nd Round (And Round 2)

Bill O'Brien said his 14-year-old son asked where Deshaun Watson's throw to Taiwan Jones ranks among his top plays.

OB still considers throwing a TD after getting kicked in the face to be Watson's best.

O'Brien: I do believe in the run game, but also taking what the defense gives you. #Texans

Bill O'Brien on Taiwan Jones: 'Play was adjusted by Deshaun, had a little package for Taiwan, that was part of his package'

Bill O'Brien on needing a faster start against Chiefs: "We've got to get off to faster start. We have to come out of the gates ready to go. We can't start this way'

Bill O'Brien on Deshaun Watson protection: 'We have to do that. Lot of keys to that. Comes down to communication, how they see the defense.'

Bill O'Brien was asked what it's like to coach Deshaun Watson. Here's how he summarized the experience: "Get rid of it, get rid of it. Great play!"

You are missing my point. Davis and Watt both play(ed) shortened careers with tons of personal accomplishments and accolades. Both amazing players at their respective positions for a shorter career. But Davis ALSO has 2 Super Bowls and a Super Bowl MVP, which Watt does not have. Which is how I am justifying Davis as a HOFer.

So you're saying Davis would NOT be in the hall without those 2 SB's?

Interesting stuff from Sean Salisbury this morning.

He said this Texans team is the worst team he has ever seen at adjusting to and handling the blitz. And he essentially placed most of it at the feet of Watson. Failure to adjust blocking, failure to hit hot reads, failure to get the ball out quick, failure to change plays, etc. Look for teams to keep blitzing Watson as we move forward.
This from a guy who says he would take no other QB in the league over Watson when the game is on the line.
Orlovsky tweeted about that as well. Except he attributed to the coaching staff for not having anything in the playbook to counter the blitz!

So... let's talk about this improved KC defense.

Chargers
Raiders
Patriots
Broncos
Bears
Chargers

Those are the offenses they played the last 6 weeks. I think that's got more to do with their defensive turnaround than some come to Jesus moment.

I agree. I don't see them being as good on defense as what we just saw in Buffalo & defensively, they haven't really been tested since their supposed resurgence. Last game we played them WFV literally dropped 3 TD's & Stills didn't even play. Still, they should be favored & are hella dangerous b/c of that dude they have under center & b/c they are going to be out for revenge. We're gonna have to put up at least 30 to have a chance.

So you're saying Davis would NOT be in the hall without those 2 SB's?
Yes. That is what I am saying. He only played 4 full seasons. Definitely not a Hall of Famer without his Super Bowls and Super Bowl MVP.

Yes I do. However, I don’t feel comfortable comparing accolades and HOF credentials of players from today and players who played over 50 years ago. Different times.

Not that large a gap between Sayers/Davis or Davis/Watt

Not that large a gap between Sayers/Davis or Davis/Watt
I agree on the Watt/Davis comparison as they both modern day superstars, with Davis having 2 Super Bowls and Super Bowl MVP being the big difference. Sayers and Davis played in 2 totally different eras. The NFL in the 90s is much more comparable to today than to the 1960s.

Doubt it. His career has been way too short. Any other first ballot HOFers with only 6 full seasons played?
If you're gonna be around this board for a while we can put money on it.
If JJ isn't a first ballot HoFer I'll donate $50 to this board. You good for $50 to the board if he does make it first ballot?

No. Two reasons are that I don’t care enough to bet money. And I said he only won’t be IF he retires after this season. If he plays a couple more seasons then I definitely think he will be.

If I remember correctly the Texans had the ball for just under 40 minutes last time and Mahomes stayed on the sidelines scratching himself. Maybe OB should stick with the same plan.

Correct. The Texans had damn near 200 yards rushing in that game and was just eating up clock. 7 of their 10 drives were over 4 minutes long, including every one in the 2nd half. KC ran 47 plays to the Texans 83 and the Texans still only win by 7.

Remind me who the NFL MVP was last year.
Mahomes is a better QB than Watson. Regrettably, Mahomes has the better coaching staff, too.

Mahomes and Watson, right now in their careers, are better than Lamar Jackson. As a Texans fan I would rather face Jackson than Mahomes.

Im rooting for Lamar. Realistically speaking, his career will probably not make it past 6 years. He hasn’t suffered a major injury yet but his size & play style will unfortunately be the cause of one.

as far as mahomes, I said it the first time the Texans played them and I’ll say it again. Deshaun Watson will win this game because he’s mentally tougher than Patrick and besides, he leads the nfl in comebacks which is a great stat to have. that brings so much confidence to your teammates knowing ok, if we’re down. There’s no need to panic. Deshaun has the ability to win it for us. I understand the first go around, Mahomes was injured and maybe chris jones didn’t play but nothing else matters when the best player on the field is #4.

Mess with the bull and you get the horns

Mahomes came back down to earth this season. This season the better Qb between Mahomes and Watson is a toss up. There is no way either is better than what we saw from Lamar Jackson this season. LJ is this seasons MVP. That means based on votes he is the best Qb this season. That is not to say there is a big difference between all the young guns mentioned most but Jackson gets a slight edge this season in my opinion.

I hate to say this but when facing a team the caliber of KC there is no room for a slow start. If we come out flat against the Chiefs the way we did against Buffalo we will look up and in no time at all we will be down three or four touchdowns. We are no nowhere near good enough to overcome that kind of score against anybody let alone KC.

Our defensive front four needs to get plenty of pressure on Mahomes without resulting to a lot of blitzing which Mahomes will pick apart in short order.

IF any team takes another team lightly at this stage in the season... the entire staff should be fired in the offseason.

Unfortunately I don't see them looking past us, but it's a good thing DW spent the offseason being baptized in the Jordan.... cause we will need a miracle.

I have witnessed favorite teams overlooking the obvious underdog in the playoffs. It is uncommon but human nature comes into play sometimes and some teams believe their own hype.

Let's see how our stars overcome terrible coaching and game preparation this time.

Not sustainable, but maybe there's some magic yet. The Chiefs are known for playoff blunders too.

I expect Kelce to dominate us as he always does.
I have a lot of confidence in us this week. Kelce only managed 4 catches for 58 yards when we beat the Chiefs in week 7. Our defense kept Mahomes in check for most of the game except for a few long passes he connected with. We also ran the ball pretty good, came close to 200 yards rushing. I think we can win this week.

I hear ya, but we played the Colts very competitively 12/9/18 last season & they mopped NRG with us on Jan 5

Somebody made adjustments, somebody didn't.

Agreed. I just think a large amount of people (including the media) have already written us off. I think we have a good chance at winning this game.

And because of that nearly 200 yards rushing, the Texans had the ball for nearly 40 minutes, keeping Mahomes off the field, and they still only win by 7.

Give Mahomes more time than 20 minutes and there might be some problems.

The Texans have to have the ground game move the needle for them. You beat dangerous QBs by keeping them on the bench. Especially when you have a suspect secondary.

There has only been one 3x DPOTY, Lawrence Taylor. JJ is easily a first ballot HoF for the work he's done on the field.
And off the field, too. I'm a Chiefs fan, but I've always bee a fan of JJ. Class act.

Let the fans say what they will....

I just hope DW or JJ print out all that is said and hang it up in the locker room.

The Texans will need to come out with a spark... not spend at least the first half trying to find it.

Hopefully the bye hurts the Chiefs come game day.
All dem sumbiches over yunder on that der chiefs board sounding ruther cocky...... trying to sound as country as possible so they think we're just a bunch of dumb hillbillies shhhhh
And you're not?

On a side no

What's the weather forecast for the game? Looking forward to a good game, close one anyway. I'm hoping Kelce doesn't kill us. Need to find someone to cover him like a blanket all day. And of course hope Tyreek slips and falls on every play. Dude is fast.

I like our chances if the game is a 24-20, 21-17 type of game. Not so much if you guys drop 30+ on us.

If you are from KC or the area, big shout out. I was at the game week 6 with the wife and friends and we stayed down in the Plaza area. Didn't meet one person from KC I didn't like. Great city, and great people. Would love to go back next year. We play there again, but I can't handle the cold, not this South Texas guy.

ARROWHEAD STADIUM

After a thriller at NRG against the Bills, the Texans have to face The Chiefs led by Patrick Mahomes. In the first game, the Texans took care of business and won in Kansas City. This is the playoffs. This will be a whole different environment. Will Bill O'Brien actually create a game plan that will help Watson and the offense get off to a fast start? Will JJ help the defense to keep Mahomes corralled? Tune in Sunday afternoon to find out.

Here are your 2 teams.

Your AFC South Champion Houston Texans!

Offense

Defense

Special Teams

The Kansas City Chiefs

Special Teams

This should be a great game. 2 young premier quarterbacks leading their teams against each other. Watson against Mahomes Round 2!
Let's hope the fired up, dangerous Texans show up for this one, not the ill prepared, lackadaisical Texans.
We should see some serious fireworks in this game. This is going to be the game of the Division round.

GO TEXANS!!!

Texans 37
Chiefs 35

Orlovsky tweeted about that as well. Except he attributed to the coaching staff for not having anything in the playbook to counter the blitz!

when a blitz is coming there typically will be whats called a 'rush route' where its supposed to be simple quick RB slip/flat or something FAST DEVELOPING that has to be read by another player, more often than not the primary/secondary targets. OBrien tries to counter the heavy by putting TEs into the blocking scheme. These TEs stink at pass blocking. I mean I dont think you could find a worse set of blocking TEs in the entire league. The blitz is getting to Watson faster. The rush routes (hot) arent developing. Its already a slow pass scheme.

this is his 2019 splits vs the blitz: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/W/WatsDe00/splits/2019/

normal rush25036611668.312889191361097.826-1287.97.70863944.682800000

that doesnt show me a guy who is struggling vs the blitz. sorry. the eye testers are getting caught up with narrative and "feel" .. not all QBs are going to be successful vs blitz .. thats the point. The offense needs to provide the necessary outlets. Watson can call all the right reads. He already calls out the mike. He shifts the line. He acknowledges the rush route. All these other guys have to execute their jobs also. the offensive line vs Buffalo was PATHETIC!!! They sucked - including Mr 20M dollar man Tunsil. They need to help out their QB. Guys coming free is a cardinal sin and how many times did it happen in a playoff game last week - 3, 4 times?

its an interesting take because didnt Deshaun do all of his damage in the 4th Q vs Buf against the blitz?? Smh.

It's supposed to be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 30s. Shouldn't be a factor, but it's the freaking midwest so who knows.

Just got back from KC sunday. Stayed there 2 weeks. Chiefs fan fare everywhere. I totally.agree and I wore my Texans knit cap everywhere.

Casinos were great especially Harrahs man I was winning like never before. I wish they had sports betting tho but they say it's coming soon in Missouri.

850 road miles back in one day. I had tons of NFL sports analysis and some news on the radio for 11 hours. I say one point that stuck out from one radio sports guy was the the Texans defense rank low vs other teams in most categories. So he went on to say a big key to a Chiefs win is Derrick Henry who is rockin n rollin right now.

That first chiefs game was like 12 game plans ago. Who cares what happened last time

So strange chiefs are the only team from final 8 last year

Im confused on why you quoted me... are you saying that my post is cocky?

Cause I fail to see how implying that my team needs to go out there ready to play with something to prove and I hope that your team is mentally and physically still on their.bye is "cocky".

First in order to be cocky I would have to be convinced this game would be a win... which while I believe anything is possible, I do not believe it is the likely outcome.

Yeah, it just takes a few. Same way over on the planet.
I’ve written I’d rather be playing the Ravens, talking about this being a tough matchup and so far none of the other members of this board has suggested I “eat a bag of dicks”, like someone on the planet suggested another Chiefs fan do when he dared to ponder a competitive game.

That 2nd Chargers' game at home. Rivers were torching them, however, they kept getting penalties that wiped out gains. On defense, Mahomes threw 3 INTs, that were called back on penalties. The Chargers blew that game by being undisciplined.
