Takeaways from the Patriots game.

I wonder, if we didn't play prevent defense there at the end, would Brady have scored sooner, leaving more time on the clock to get a 2nd posession without having to resort to an onside kick.
There's nothing wrong with prevent defenses. The purpose is to kill clock. Allow them to gain yards, but make them spend time doing it. Just like any other defensive scheme, it requires players to execute.

Where the Texans screwed up is they let the Pats drive the ball 82 yards in less than 1 minute!!! They had a 21 yard pass play, 5 yard penalty, 36 yards on a dump off, then the 20 yard touchdown!!!

On the 36 yard play by James White, it looked like Hargraeves and JJo simply didn't want to tackle. Guys were moving like they were playing in the pro-bowl. It was embarrassing TBH.

How Texans borrowed from an AFC rival on touchdown vs. Patriots
Dec. 2, 2019

The Texans borrowed a wrinkle from the Ravens' playbook, executing Baltimore's version of a three tight end formation for a touchdown in Sunday's win over the Patriots.

When the Patriots lost to the Ravens earlier this season, they struggled like most defenses to contain versatile quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The Ravens used a pistol formation with three tight ends and did damage with a read-option play during which Jackson handed it off to running back Mark Ingram for a first down. They call the two tight ends in the backfield brawny look a bully formation.

During a 28-22 win Sunday night, tight ends Jordan Akins and Darren Fells lined up in the backfield split across from quarterback Deshaun Watson with running back Carlos Hyde lined up behind him. Watson faked a handoff to Hyde and kept the football as both Akins and Fells bolted into the secondary on the left side. Fells was left completely uncovered on a 13-yard touchdown catch. Tight end Jordan Thomas was lined up as a traditional in-line blocker on the right side.

Earlier in the game, the Texans lined up in the pistol with three tight ends and ran the ball for a short gain. By running the ball earlier, the Texans made the Patriots respect the possibility of a running play.

THE REST OF THE STORY
A month ago, Chris Simms made the comment that the Texans don't "steal" enough plays from other teams. It's good to see they borrowed this play from the Ravens. Now, someone tell Watson, Kelly and O'Brien to borrow some plays from the 49ers' offense.

Carlos Hyde's run fake makes this play work. After Watson's fake, Hyde kept running looking like he was trying to find a hole. The LB(s) who would have covered Fells totally bought Hyde's run fake for a sec or two, leaving Fells wiiiiide open.

Brady is still slinging it - he leads the league in number of attempts. However, he's #29th in completion percentage. Not sure if that means he's missing more often or if his current receiving corps can't catch.
Some of both most likely.
The narrative use to be look what Bradys doing with these guys off the street, now it’s whose he throwing to. The fans who follow the game are aware he’s on the decline. Not taking away from his accomplishments that’s here to stay but as for this season, imo he’s looked bad. Andrew luck has never beaten Brady btw

My take away...... Watson and company are better at drawing up plays than OB.

Now, to give credit where it is due, at least OB is an honest man as I heard him in post game say that Watson and company thought up the play and brought it to him.

Its easy to push that it was someone elses idea when it fails... but he pushed credit on the guys when it was successful. I have to respect him for that... as much as I say bad about OB the coach, I have to respect the character of OB the man.

You do realize that was one play in a whole night of good play calling right? I mean if you are serious about giving credit where it’s due then you can’t say they are better at drawing up plays because one trick play worked.

BoB and RAC game planned about as perfect as you can ask for and the players executed about as perfect as you can ask for. No one play was the difference maker. That being said it was funny watching BB’s team get owned by a trick play like that, usually that kind of thing is stupid to try against the Pats.

I DID however see the play, so I CAN speak on tthat because I DID witness that.

IF youd rather me speak out of my butt on things I didnt witness or have any experience with but speak as though I am an expert on... thats what the rest of the internet is for, have fun.

IF I werent serious, I wouldn't have said it.

Nice to see OBrien HUMBLE enough to "borrow" plays from other offenses. Its the way this league works. Copycat the hell out of whatever is successful because it wont be long before the great DCs figure it out. I thought the whole RUN/RUN/PASS thing was gone with Gary and as a DC you can GAMEPLAN for the Texan tendencies. Defenses have clued in on the "OBrien System".

My biggest takeaway is still that this team is so Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This was the game I was expecting to see against the Ravens. This game plan would've beaten the Ravens.
I'll give credit where credit is due, OB had this team ready to go and called a very good game. Well done. Please do that for the next 8 games.
I understand this has been the case under BO'b. I believe the main issue has been lack of continuity. Hopefully we've got a core in place that can stay healthy where we can build on actual success.

Ummm actually no he didnt "mastermind" anything. That trick play came about because the players recognized it earlier in the year (Chicago- offensive whiz coach) and wanted to include it in the playbook/gameplan for the week. If you want to give OBrien a cookie for "allowing" them to run it. Okay give him macadamia nut.
Had that play not turned out well, it wouldn't have been Watson or the other players who supposedly brought the play to O'Brien taking the credit. The origin of the play would have never come to light. Rather, O' Brien would have been left alone with only a mold-ladened cookie to show for it, while being credited with another "Stagger Lee" type of rap in silence with no one ever knowing who was really behind it.

RAC's brilliant play designs and coverage camouflage baffled Tom Brady!! I LOVE to see smart, THINKING coaches. Its chess not checkers.

Very nice to see what RAC can do with competent deep secondary personnel. Creative! We may not have a Ramsey, but I am starting to like the strength in numbers because of what it allows RAC to do if we get to 3rd down. He can mix it up because so many of the guys can cover slot or outside, and have man/zone ability. I think some of the guys tackling is probably the biggest weakness and due to injuries and collective bargaining I don't see this getting much better during the year. Late in the game saw Roby, VH and Jjo either whiff or not put the shoulder in there. Up 19 points, maybe I get it. Save it for the playoffs or close games, but looked rather weak

Your "cookie" comment towards O'Brien which spurred me to respond was more than unnecessary innuendo. Watson and the other players should indeed be deserving of thinking up the play and executing it, but O'Brien undoubtedly reviewed the concept and oversaw the details in running it successfully.............and is deserving of more than a "cookie."

#52 needs more snaps on defense. More reps, more results. Guy might turn out to be really good.

Duke producing in the passing game. He needs more than just a splash play a game. Get him matched up 1 on 1 like that play Sunday night. Not a LBer in the league can cover him.
Should we be concerned with the running game? Hasn’t been up to snuff last few weeks. Good run Ds or Oline?

Rac can only do that with the right personnel to execute the plays. You can thank the mastermind of OB for getting the right players.

What was it that Devlin said? I do a better job with better players. (Not that it is an endorsement on his job and he should stay)

do you mean #54, martin, or really 52 in mingo? martin got 40+ snaps which is good against a team that is weak running the ball

Tom Brady is the greatest of all-time.

But he is close enough to the end that we all see it. All except him, that is.

He has said he wants to play until he is 45, but it is difficult to imagine he would want to go through three more years of this.

Sunday night, ol’ Tom Brady didn’t do what old Tom Brady would have done. Forget being the best of all-time. This Tom Brady wasn’t even the best quarterback on the field.

That nod goes to the Texans’ Deshaun Watson.

Wayward passes to receivers who couldn’t shake Texans defenders and facing near-constant pressure behind a shaky offensive line, Brady did not have much fun at NRG Stadium. By the time he willed the Patriots to three second-half touchdowns, it was too late.

Watson, on the other hand, had a ball in becoming the first Texans quarterback to beat Brady, as Houston walked off with a 28-22 win.

OK, technically, Matt Schaub did that with a win in 2009, but that was due to the Patriots’ generosity. Bill O’Brien was the quarterbacks coach for New England in a game in which Brady was replaced with Brian Hoyer for the final drive of each half.

Otherwise, the Texans had been 0-10 against the Patriots with a streak of eight straight losses.
That came to an end in large part because Brady didn’t look like himself. He looked old.
Football is a young man’s game.

The new age of quarterbacks is here. It features flash and dash, razzle and dazzle.

The Lamar Jacksons and Deshaun Watsons make plays Brady can only dream about. You have never seen Brady diving into the end zone after taking an option pitch on a trick play as Watson did Sunday to score the Texans’ fourth touchdown.

That’s not Brady’s forte. Never has been. His praying mantis-looking, 40-yard dash at the NFL combine is still played on blooper reels.

On Sunday, Brady did have one of the 10 runs of 13 or more yards he has had in his career. It took so long for him to cover that distance, NBC could have cut to a commercial during the sprint and gotten back before it was over.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson almost checked out of DeAndre Hopkins trick play pass
Avery Duncan

The H-Town special almost wasn’t a special.

The Houston Texans’ creative Duke Johnson handoff to DeAndre Hopkins pitch to Deshaun Watson nearly didn’t happen. Watson didn’t like what he saw on the play, as the New England Patriots were playing a zone defense rather than man.

“Honestly it wasn’t the perfect look,” Watson told reporters after the 28-22 win. “We wanted man coverage where the safety was one backer here. They went kind of like a two-high look. It was funky at first. I wanted to check out of it.”

Watson wanted man. He didn’t get it. The timing was right, so was the personnel. Despite not getting the right defense, he went for it.

On first-and-goal with 9:58 left in the fourth, Watson handed it off to Johnson, Hopkins sprinted behind them, took the ball, hauled towards the end zone, then, at the last moment, he pitched it to Watson. Touchdown Texans.

“But I was like, ‘No, this is a perfect time.’ We got it here. If we don’t run it now, probably never run it. So I was like forget it. Me and Hop (DeAndre Hopkins) will make something work. He pulled up. The safety, the corner was sitting out there, I think it was J.C. Jackson. I saw Hop tuck it, took one step, and I knew he was going to pitch it right out. I just know Hop like the back of my hand. He just threw it up in the air, I got it, scored. It was cool,” said Watson.

Ultimately, Watson did not check out of the play. The result: six points, confusion and a score that would eventually finish off a monumental win, drop the Patriots 10-2, and relegate New England to the No. 2 seed for now due to Baltimore Ravens having the tiebreaker over the top team in the AFC East.........................

.............If Watson checked out of it, who knows what would have happened?

Lot of stuff to unpack here, for one it’s showing Watson is becoming more comfortable about trusting the other guys to make plays happen instead of trying to do it all himself.

The other thing is puts to rest the long running question around here of if Watson is allowed to change things up at the line and call off plays.

Overall great play and happy for Hop finally getting that a TD pass. :gotexans1

WAIT A SECOND!

Does this mean OB isn’t fully responsible for the play calling since Watson can change it?

Does this mean Watson does have some accountability for reading the blitz and changing things depending on what he sees?

Here I have been told that all the sacks were on OB and lousy play calling and nothing was Watson’s fault.

So.... does anyone think Josh McDaniels forgot how to call plays or Brady forgot how to read defenses?

We've got better talent at receiver, different problems, but similar issues. The QB not seeing what he's expecting more often than not
The Pats outgained the Texans 471 to 292.
The Texans were penalized for 19 more yards.
The Pats dominated the TOP.

When I saw the Vegas line only between 3 and 3.5, and with this being a prime time game, I told myself anything can happen here.

I would have taken the Texans if I was still a betting man.

Doubt RAC "baffled" Brady on anything. What those plays were are examples of how Brady looks like when:

A. he doesn't have protection - Always has been the story with him..when you can get to him he can look pretty damn average/bad.
B. when he doesn't have a guaranteed mismatch to go to like he had with Gronk all those years.
C. when his WR core is trash.
D. when you get old.

The Pats had to settle for a FG when Brady missed a wide-open man in the end zone with no pressure (Texans rushed only 3).

Brady threw a bad pass on the INT with no pressure on him either.
But most likely, the WR ran a very poor route. Too short and a terrible stem on the quick in.

All of those things will effect any QB and age will have nothing to do with it. One of Brady's best seasons was in 2013 when he posted his lowest stat totals over the last 10 years. Its just one of the dumbest things a GM/HC could do to an old QB though. A QB that is 40 years old or more needs to have a lot less responsibility to carry the offense than adding more to it.
