Takeaways from the Colts Game

Let him take his bumps and learn from his mistakes - even experienced QBs make mistakes against quality defenses and besides, how else do they learn?
I'd be most interested to know your solution to obtaining a quality, experienced QB who does not make mistakes if you want a better option than Watson.

Exactly, a few great examples : Brady against the Giants twice and the Eagles in the playoffs. Brady made all types of mistakes during those games. This season against the Bill's. But hey it's only Watson. You have to understand the blogger. He believes the HC/OC deserves a pass. While Watson doesn't get a pass even though this is basically his 2nd season. His rookie year he went down with an injury after playing 7 games.

I also stood up for OB for a long time but have gradually soured on his offense.
He needs to try a new OC - could help him out big time.

This really comes down to do you think Watson can learn from his mistakes and stop doing things like drifting to his right when he faces pressure. So far after 3 yrs the answer appears to be no.

I dont have an answer to your question because I dont know who's going to be available. The Texans are between a rock and a hard place. What I do know is right now they aren't going to win a SB with the current level of QB play.

Thing is, when he rolls out to his right, he is quite gifted at throwing an accurate pass on the run and I count this as one of his strengths.
Not many players have that ability.
As far as current ability goes, yes, he could do with more polish, but that will come with time.
Think of it like this - Peyton Manning also took a little while to hit his stride.
Obviously, improved play by his team mates who have only been together for a short while in many cases, would also help.
Personally, I think we have most of the pieces in place - now we just need time for them to gel and some appropriate coaching will go a long way towards that.

Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Phillip Rivers, Mathew Stafford, Matt Ryan and even Aaron Rodgers said to tell you it takes more than QB play to win Super Bowls.

Agreed, but if a QB turns the ball over in the playoffs you're almost guaranteed to lose in the playoffs.

Hope you're right.

My takeaway from the Colts game:
  • The OL has regressed. Maybe it's the injuries to Tunsil and Howard, but I'm not seeing the same push from early in the season. Howard looks very slow with that brace.
  • Compared to early in the season, Stills does not seem as explosive. I think, he is still limited by the hamstring injury
  • Fuller. When he is healthy, is a game changer. However, I cannot understand how the offense is so bad when the #2 WR is out. It's one of the great mysteries of the OB offense.

Fuller is a really good player. So is Watson. When both are out there with Hopkins they can overcome OBriens schemes by going off schedule

Spot on. People in the know, realize OB does and will continue to hold this team back.

As we can see, we're not the only ones seeing that stuff. A few of these members thinks we're just hating on OB. Not the freaking case. And to top it off I can't believe one member is trying to blame Watson for O'brien's downfalls.

Edit: It is actually two members because one dude agrees with everything ole buddy says on here.

They had already snapped the dam ball when the zebras whistled it down because a TO was called at the last instant.

O'Brien has nothing to do with Watson's lack of pocket presence, he doesn't step into the pocket.

Who's the other poster you're referring too?

Look at tjis video and tell me he's not stepping up in the pocket on some these plays. Again please stop the nonsense. Just the Saints game alone he stepped up into the pocket at least three times and delivered.

Some, true

Consistently no

We have a young QB that is making mistakes against quality defenses and a HC that's trying to limit those mistakes. I wish BOB would fully open up the offense too. But that probably means missing the playoffs while the young QB learns. You OK with that?

Why did you unlike this post Nate?

We have an exciting young QB and a boring, unimaginative play caller.
Just seems to me we are not capitalising on our best asset.
What makes the whole thing even more frustrating is that we waited for so long for a guy just like Watson.

Very very interesting how you both see this and how it brings to mind how our 'perception' from the armchair shapes our opinion. Very very good points to you both.

What did you think of that play he came up with after the TO?

Don't really have a problem with the playcall as a premium was placed on the security of the ball. In that regard, u want things to be simple. As long as we keep control of the ball, we still run 30 secs off the clock.

This is not a shot on you Texansballer74, but a shot on the tv hosts. I 100% agree with there assessment on OB‘s coachingand our offense, BUT F this BS about the Colts being at a disadvantage due to injuries. Was Brissett hobbled by a MCL? Yep, but so was our starting RT. Was T.Y. back off a strained muscle? Yep, and so was Fuller. The difference Fuller played well, TY did not. Were they missing Mack? Yep, and we played with out JJ Watt. Plus, we played without Reid, Roby, and Johnson. Let’s also not forget we lost Miller for the season before it even started. How good would our RB rotation be with Miller, Hyde and Johnson? I get sick and tired of people giving other teams excuses for injuries while ignoring our injured players.
Nick Wright is an idiot

I am just glad Frank Reich wanted to show everyone how smart is was and stopped running the ball after the Colts scored their only touchdown of the half by running it down our throats.

Run defense needs to get better or we are not making the playoffs.

After seeing how the Ravens took care of the Rams last night, I am convinced they are just that damn good.
I was thinking without key injuries to their OL or LJ they look to be the best team. The showdown against the best DL in the league with the 49'ers will be fun to watch next week. Titans and Bills may be physical to try to trade shots with them, but the passing game looks to be clicking now too. Need a league wide D coordinator meeting to brainstorm how to stop them!

I'm convinced coaching matters. Above average coaching with above average talent is a mutha

Teams were hiring the boy wonder Sean McVay's Starbucks barrista for HC based on what he was doing in LA with the Rams just this past year. A year later, teams have started to figure out what McVay has been doing on offense & he & his offense looks kinda like ours actually lol. Did he all of a sudden become a bad HC? unlikely. Check out their MB though..fans swear up & down its coaching.

So coaching does matter, above average talent and a few other things matter more though & that's been the hill i've been choosing to die on repeatedly on this message board when it comes to criticism of BoB.

It was just last year that Harbaugh was thought to be on the hot seat. Then he inserted Jackson & now all of a sudden everyone thinks he's this great coach again b/c the Ravens look so dominant now....Funny how that works. but give it time. NFL defenses will start to figure out how to defend Jackson and their offense. Injuries and FA & coaching departures will do the rest. might take them this full year, but they'll get it figured out.

Which is where the Texans should be after mortgaging two drafts.

They will only get worse until they have draft picks and capspace again.

Funny how a hurt ol makes McVay look like an avg HC.

Agreed about the Ravens and Harbaugh.

That’s what we did. A gamble we had to make. Hopefully it works out in the long run.

Losing a 1st rd pick in the 2020 draft, which is all they really lost, in addition to having two 3rd rd comp picks and a high 4th rd pick in addition to their own pick in the 4th rd is hardly mortgaging a draft. Plus you get a useful WR in addition to a franchise LT that you badly needed to protect Jesusincleats.

The 2021 draft comes down to this, do you think 2 yrs of Stills is worth a 2nd rd pick?

Do you think using two 1sts on Tunsil is worth the price it took to properly protect Jesusin cleats? Remember Tunsil is just 25 yrs old and should get better as he ages?

Only time will tell is my point. If the big fella reups, heck yeah it was worth it. If he doesn’t then no sir it wasn’t worth it. You could’ve used those number one picks on a left tackle.

Not sure what you meant there? Why aren't you including the 2021 1st & 2nd round picks we lost as well?

As others have said, only if he extends with Texans, which I expect him to do.

I expect Tunsil to go to the highest bidder. Hopefully it will be us for a change.

You guys are making the playoffs. The colts are currently too banged up to do much. Hilton may have reaggravated calf in his failed attempt to play against you guys. Meanwhile funchess and Campbell still don't look ready to return and by the time they do it may be too little too late.

The key for the texans is if you lose to the Patriots you just need to win the rest of your games especially the ones versus the titans otherwise both the texans and colts may be sitting at home watching the titans.

You don't?

I'm calling that coaching. What do you call it? Coaches adjust or they don't. They get better or they get left behind.

So coaching does matter, above average talent and a few other things matter more though & that's been the hill i've been choosing to die on repeatedly on this message board when it comes to criticism of BoB.

I'm one of those that believe the Texans matched up well, top to bottom with every other team in the league for a while. No team hits on all their draft picks every year. No team hits on all their FA acquisitions every year. Every team has holes.

Most here, far as I can tell, don't believe we've been coached to our strengths.

So many things we see other teams incorporate on gameday, we don't understand why we can't successfully incorporate them on gameday.

Understanding we haven't had a playmaker at QB. Some of us thought if we ever got a play maker at QB.... well.

Watson tried to overcome Obie's scheme by ignoring him and running a play quickly. But Obie stopped him by calling a time out that could have cost the game.

I think that the role of coaching relative to a team's performance is more significant in football than any other sport and by a large margin. Secondary, LB's, DLine, OLine, TE, RB, WR, QB all have different position coaches teaching technique specific to a grander scheme laid out by the head coach which differs from team to team. That alone is much more sophisticated to orchestrate than any other sport by quite a bit IMO but when you add play calling into the equation of team performance, the significance of coaching in football relative to other sports widens exponentially. There is just much more room for creativity and sophistication in football play calling vs basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, etc. There's also more room for the game to be impacted by game management such as clock usage and play challenges in football than the other sports. I would argue that coaches input in talent selection relative to the coaches grand scheme is more significant in football than other sports as well. All coaches in all sports are going to do better with better talent. But more so than any other sport, good coaching in football is needed to pull it all together to get winning results.
