Mid season prediction of 2020 draft needs

Great win today!

With the bye week coming up, I thought it’d be interesting to evaluate our draft position of needs.

CB- I think another young CB would be a great addition. Although I’m interested to see how Conley develops for us.

Edge- We need more of a pass rush. I know we will have Ejiofor coming off injury, but we still need another.

OL- we need to solidify the trenches to protect Watson.

Looks like the Texans will draft in the back third of the 2nd round in 2020 (54-64). The positions most drafted over the past 5 years at those spots are:

CB - 12
S - 10
WR - 9
DL - 9

In a perfect world, the best player available would be a pass rushing DL. Which means the Texans will likely draft a TE.

So far the 2020 draft looks strong again at the cornerback position. The Edge rushers / olb looks pretty good right now also. Our second round pick should be the best of the two positions available. What appears to be our only 3rd round pick should go for the opposite. I liked what I saw in Conley this game. As of today I do not foresee picking up significant free agents at either position and we may be in trouble there. A note of hope is my guy Max Crosby doing excellent and was a fourth-round pick. We have two of those.

I guess the way the 2020 NFL Draft is shaping up.....the Texans will have the following:

RD2
CB, DL, LB

RD3 (COMP- Badger)
CB, DL, LB, C
RD3 (COMP- KJax)
CB, DL, LB, C

RD4 (Miami)
CB, DL, LB, C, OL
RD4
DL, LB, C, OL

RD5
WR, RB, OL, DL, LB

RD7
WR, RB, DB, K
RD7 (COMP- Covington)
DB, RB, WR, K

That would sum up my shopping list by position if these are in fact the picks the team may have when the draft rolls around.

I'll start looking at early draft projections for players over the next few weeks. What this team needs seems to be in pretty good supply come 2020.

There won't be a 3rd for KJax

Maybe a 7th if Roby doesn't come back

Roby/KJax cancel each other out.

They will get a pick for Mathieu

I'm going to put out a bye week mock soon. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Roby/KJax cancel out if they both play out the season

Post it and I will give you my thoughts

Iirc, Roby if he leaves does not come into play until the 2021 draft. For example honey badger and Jackson left after the 2018 season and did not impact the comp election for the 2019 draft. I have not seen any suggestion anywhere that we will get a 3rd round pick for Kareem Jackson other than this message board. I truly hope we do.

I am hoping that we try and find a few players who can grow into replacements for some of our upcoming free agents in a couple of seasons. I worry about our cap situation once Deshaun and Tunsil begin to get paid. Here are a few guys I have my eye on in 2020:
Solomon Kindley: replacement for Zack Fulton after a year of grooming to be the starting RG.
Gage Cervenka: replacement for Greg Mancz as IOL depth or, if we were lucky, Nick Martin.
Devin Duvernay: speed demon who would allow us to move on from one of Stills or Fuller after next season.
K'Lavon Chaisson & Terrell Lewis: Whitney Mercilus is my biggest question regarding our own free agents. Either of these guys would be his replacement if we cant afford Merc.
Jaylon Johnson & Darnay Holmes: Either guy would be selected in the event we not bring back Roby.
Naquan Jones & Justin Madubuike: Brandon Dunn is likely not going to break the bank but I'd save a little cap space by drafting his replacement.
