Texans random thought of the day

Per Aaron Wilson:

McGough upgraded practice squad salary

Although McGough is no longer on the active roster, they are paying the former Seattle Seahawks seventh-round draft pick an upgraded practice squad salary since re-signing him Saturday.

McGough is being paid $320,298 for the remainder of the season at a rate of $29,118 per week.

McGough was previously paid the standard practice squad rate of $20,000 per week.

Texans-Raiders Preview: Houston Offense Should Have A Field Day
Though there’s a lot of new faces on both sides, one thing remains the same—the Texans should dominate the Raiders this week. Houston is the superior team on both sides of the ball. More specifically, the mismatch that Texans fans should be salivating at and rejiggering their fantasy lineup for is the Texans’ offense against the Raiders’ defense. Oakland’s defense allows 376.5 yards per game, which is the ninth most in the league. This is probably the worst defense the Texans will face the rest of the season. The black mark against the silver and black is their pass defense, which allows 289.8 yards through the air per game. They’ve also allowed 16 touchdowns through six games.

The Raiders’ defense features a 4-3 nickel scheme with minimal pass rush and typically a single high safety. The Raiders blitz less than almost every team in the league. In 2018, the Raiders only blitzedon 3rd down 21% of the time, which was the second least in the NFL. WithoutKhalil Mack, I bet those numbers are even lower as the Raiders don’t even try to get to the QB.

The mantra will be, “If they are going to sit back with seven defenders, might as well give them five receivers to try to cover.” If Oakland intends to letDeshaun Watsontake his time and find his targets, this game will be over in a hurry.

This take conveniently ignores the other side of the coin..................our secondary history up to now. At the same time, we may see why the new Raiders DC's scheme played so much against Conley's success.

Can't make predictions on the Texans, because their team is to volatile.

I have no idea what I'll see from week to week. I do think they'll win though.

I agree, go back and listen to the press conference when Gaine was fired. BOB said Cal made it very clear what he areas he needed to improve.

I might be in the minority but I have no issue with the trades, signings, and players we’ve added. I love the draft as much as anyone but we’ve added some really good players and they’re young. I’d be pissed if we traded premium picks for guys in their mid 30s. I love Tunsil and Stills and what they bring to the team. I really like Hyde and Johnson (I’d still look to add another RB in the next draft). I love the potential CB group of Roby, Conley, Johnson and Joseph. As a long time Raider fan ( they’re my other team) I was happy we added Conley, I think he’ll fit our defense really well, and he’s young.

I didn’t like the way the Clowney situation was handled and I think Martin was over paid (though he has played well this year - so far), but overall the FOS has done a pretty good job

I only question the efficacy of "all in" and how far they are really prepared to go. Giving up 2 firsts for Tunsil = ALL IN and a move that even when a guy like myself questions his current throughput, can also acknowledge the greatness of what the finished product might look like. Giving up a 3rd for Duke Johnson for him to be a minor part of the offense? ALL IN in terms of capital given up, but then the execution of the plan was not fulfilled - as of yet at least because he rarely gets schemed into the gameplan. O'Brien turned Duke Johnson into another between the tackles runner. Then you have the Clowney debacle, which basically turned a blue chip pro bowler, into Gareon Conley, Barkevious Mingo, and that Martin guy. Completely unnecessary and the defense has suffered because of it. Overpayment on Martin is just Texan M.O. at this point with their routine and premature extensions for certain players along the line, and their mishandling of all pro type players that they didnt retain. They could have had their pick of the litter among all the nations CBs in the draft last year knowing how slim they would be there, and instead took a project offensive lineman! Cool, its working out with Tytus thats great, but you could have filled that role later with a similar player. Same with the 3rd rounder Warring, WE HAD JUST DRAFTED 2 TEs THE YEAR PRIOR!! What am I missing?? STill they sign Darren Fells LOL who has become the most productive TE on the roster at the most economical price.

All IN to me is making a Chris Harris deal happen, going public in your interest of certain players, leaking info that you are still shopping. Inspire some hope. Dropping 3rds on projects isnt inspiring an "ALL IN" year- it just falls in line with a rebuild.

This team is resigned to its fate as far as the next couple of drafts is concerned and has one foot in the grave already in terms of guaranteed contracts on the horizon, there is no going back now. Lets really go all in.

I'm trying to figure out how the Raiders went into Indy and beat the Colts. Didn't see the game. How did this happen?

Worried that POS Incognito will try to hurt JJ. How he was let back into the league is mystifying.

Under the radar:

Texans' Jahleel Addae contributes in versatile role
Aaron Wilson , Houston Chronicle Oct. 24, 2019

Operating close to the line of scrimmage as the Texans' money dime player, Texans safety Jahleel Addae is involved in a lot of contact.

The former Los Angeles Chargers starter plays the game with a hard-hitting style. He has 22 tackles and one pass defensed.

"Addae has done a good job for us," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "He's a good tackler, very smart guy, he does a lot for us on special teams, really good teammate. He's been a good addition to our team.

"He's helped us in a lot of ways. He's the fullback on the punt team, which is a big position. You call out everything, you're the quarterback of the punt team. Then, he's able to step up and play the money role or be a guy that can come in when somebody goes down. He's done a good job for us."

Chiefs initiated Texans' trade for Carlos Hyde
Aaron Wilson , Houston Chronicle Oct. 24, 2019

NFL teams knew the Texans needed reinforcements at running back with the loss of their Pro Bowl alternate runner.

One of the teams that contacted the Texans was the Kansas City Chiefs. They initiated the trade talks that resulted in the Texans sending offensive lineman Martinas Rankin, who was going to be released, in exchange for running back Carlos Hyde, who wasn't going to make the Chiefs' roster.

Hyde has become the Texans' primary running back, rushing for 461 yards and three touchdowns while working in tandem with backup Duke Johnson. Johnson has gained 273 yards and caught 13 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown.

"We had some guys on our team already, and then Kansas City approached us about that trade, so we thought about it," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "We researched it and it took a while to figure it out, but I felt like that was something that could help our team. Carlos has come in here and he runs hard.

"Obviously, I was familiar with him, coming from Ohio State when I was at Penn State. Coached against him. He's done a good job. He's done a real good job for us, and hopefully it can continue.”

I hope the Texans backfield gets younger next offseason. Generally speaking, I’ve liked what I’ve seen with Hyde so far but only so much left in his tank, if he is even resigned.

I remember on redzone channel they jumped all over them. Think it was like 21-0 early. Big plays. Swear an end around was taken to the house. Just one of those games. Like carolina coming to Houston. Another zone defense with Oakland

Man I thought this a good trade by OB thinking he Initiates it. Lol. Of course KC called and OB said yeah. Could you imagine this year without hyde?

I think you may be missing the important point................knowing that the Texans lost Miller, numerous teams contacted O'Brien regarding their RBs for trade.............O'Brien chose Hyde to negotiate for.

Totally get it. I remember seeing Hyde was gonna get cut before trade. But I thought OB initiated the trade. KC did. This made too much sense for OB and texans to not do when we all thought Rankin was gonna get cut. Hyde is a solid back. Niners let him walk and signed a guy who hasnt seen the field in two yrs. McKinnon? From Vikings.

I just thought OB this was an OB move. But it was agreeing to an offer. Totally different. But OB trades have been solid. Even if not initiated....

I did not like our RB situation heading into season Miller was solid and nothing behind him. I wonder if OB initiated Duke trade?

Funny how Incognito is one of PFF's top rated OG's.

I’ve been happy with Duke so far, but I do agree that he could be a bigger part of the offense. I think he has the ability to be a Ronnie Harmon for us. The Clowney debacle I’m putting equally on Gaine and OB. We could of had the deal KC made for Clark but Gaine waited too long to get back to KC. I blame OB for not sucking it up for this season and trading him next off season. I want to see Warring play for a bit before I get too upset with that pick. TE can be match up nightmare and he was a fast riser in the draft process. I would like to see them add another CB, but not Harris. I read they checked on him and the asking price was too high. Texanswire proposed trying to add Trufant from the Falcons. He’s a couple years younger than Harris and is playing well. I’d be really happy adding him to our roster

Regarding draft picks, looking at our roster we might be in the position of drafting for depth for the first time in a long time. I think Conley will be a player for us (a better fit for our system) and I’ve been happy with Roby. If we could find a way to add Trufant I think our secondary would go from weakness to very solid. I’d like to add better OL depth, a young pass rusher and another RB. Given what we have in picks I think that can be accomplished in 2020

Yeah, Rice only sucker punched his girlfriend... Incognito threatened to kill

I guess you dont believe in 2nd chances. Heck, Rice's wife wanted him to get a 2nd chance but you dont.

Incognito went off of the deep end during the time they were preparing for his dad's funeral. I've seen this happen before and during stressful times sometimes people say/do things they later wish they hadn't done. But if you want to be judge and jury be my guest. I'm just not that guy.

Justin Reid ranked 25th in the PFF "Top 25 2nd Year Players" list: https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-pff-rankings-top-25-second-year-nfl-players-week-7-2019

25. S JUSTIN REID, HOUSTON TEXANS
Reid hasn’t quite played up to the level that he did as a rookie when he recorded an overall grade 77.0, but he has still been a steady force on the Houston back end in 2019. Part of the dip in grade to 66.9 this season (30th out of 70 qualifying safeties) stems from missed tackles. Last season, Reid missed only five tackles all season. That number is already at eight this season, tied for the 14th most in the NFL. With Reid patrolling at free safety, the Texans have done a good job of limiting deep success for opposing offenses, though. As a team, they have allowed just 11 of the 37 passes 20 or more yards downfield to be completed against them. That completion percentage of 29.7% is seventh-best in the league.

The Texans worked out another CB today.......... former Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Picasso Nelson. Working out CBs this late in the week tends to be a sign of how the Texans feel (with all the injuries) feel about their CB situation.

How rookie lineman Javier Edwards spent his time waiting for Texans' call
Aaron Wilson , Houston Chronicle Oct. 25, 2019
Cut by his hometown Texans after a solid preseason, rookie defensive tackle Javier Edwards got creative while waiting for another shot at the NFL.

When the Texans cut the Ben Davis graduate after the preseason, Edwards was determined to not fall into the trap of not working out enough or eating right.

His plan ran into a snag, though. Edwards didn't have a gym membership. So, the 6-3, 335-pound gamed the system by signing up for guest passes with a local gym with several different emails. When the Texans signed him to the practice squad Tuesday after defensive lineman Albert Huggins was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles' active roster, the gym had just discovered that Edwards had been working out for free for two months.

"Actually, it was a funny story," said Edwards, who's bench pressed 225 pounds 31 times, squatted 550 pounds and run the 40-yard dash in 4.97 seconds. "I was working out and trying to do everything I can to stay in shape. I had like six different emails to get those five-day guest passes. The one time they caught me was the day I got the call from the Texans."

I don't remember who posed the question in what thread..........."how many years in advance can you trade draft pics?" But I found this:

According the the league office, trades conducted before the draft begins can include draft picks in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Once the draft starts (i.e., the moment the Commissioner declares the draft to be open and places the team with the first pick on the clock), trades can include picks from 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

This was written right after Cornell Armstrong was drafted by the Dolphins in 2018.

***********************

Strengths

My takeaway from his college career was that he’s just one of those zero fear kind of guys. He plays like he loves those jump ball situations and that style made him really annoying to deal with for opposing offenses. He plays guys really tight, which comes in handy defending deep passes. Plus he’s not too shabby at defending the run when they bring a sweep at him.

Weaknesses
Remember how I said he loves those jump ball situations? There have definitely been a few times where he gets a bit too physical before the ball gets there. That could be a problem in the NFL. Also, I get he’s a DB, but he just doesn’t have the softest hands out there. If you watch any of his tapes, there’s been a number of times where he does a great job of jumping in front of quick out routes and they should have been pick-sixes, but he drops the ball. It’s a good, not great kind of thing.

Where does he fit?
He’ll definitely be useful on special teams right away, I think. He had the speed to block a few kicks in college and he loves to hit. Throw him at gunner this year and see what happens, I say. Give him a couple years and I think he could be a decent nickel guy for Miami..

What is his ceiling? Floor?
Here’s the way I see it: OurLads has him as the ninth-best corner on the Dolphins right now, and I guess that’s fair considering they probably hadn’t seen too much of him before the draft. But I think pretty quickly he’ll show that he’s better than that. That being said I’m not expecting him to be a starter, at least not for a few years or make a pro bowl or anything like that. So I guess ceiling: occasional starter, fairly reliable depth guy. His floor: gets some time at special teams and then disappears from the league in a few years. Nothing against the guy, but that seems to be how it goes.

3 first rounders??

not sure even that would do it

The first round picks is a lot …. but I wouldn't even answer the call , well maybe I'd answer to laugh hysterically at whoever was on the other end.

If this franchise is playing to win Championships RIGHT NOW , you don't trade DHop. Those picks don't make you better today and we're playing for today - at least I'd like to think we are.

If I could turn those 1st for other players before deadline this week , I just might do it. Maybe get 3 really good at a position of need

I just cant get excited for this game …. Last week was such a letdown , I almost expect another and it seems every time I raise my expectations of this team , they just don't play well.

I went into this season with a small amount of expectations. That way I'm not to upset when they lose.
