I'm pretty certain they could argue, and win, that it's a clear move on the likeness of the Oilers.

I know you want this to be a thing, but honestly the Adams' hold all the cards here.

If anything can happen it's on the McNair's to try and work a deal financially to have some kind of usage rights to the uniforms/logos or likenesses. And they aren't going to do that because they don't give a sh*t to do that.

He asked if we added a color scheme for an alternate uniform that had the same colors as the oliers, and that's where I think it would be an obvious move to try and have an oilers throwback. And I think part of the problem is in the obvious nature that it's the team from Houston trying to hypothetically do so. It would transparent as all get out that it's a move on the intellectual property of the Adams'.

I'm just some dumdum typing away about this. Didn't sleep at a holiday inn or anything. Just seems like it's a pretty obvious attempt that would be snuffed out by any lawyer worth his salt and certainly one(s) on the payroll of a family of billionaires.

Bud did retire the Oilers color scheme, etc so that no other NFL team could use it. Could Amy Adams give them permission? Probably. Would she? I have no idea but I doubt it out of respect for her father's wishes.

Anyway, Earl made a comment in the article about time allowing you to get over things, etc. I know he was bitter like the fans and that's probably why he never would accept Bud's invitations to come out there. He's over it now, I know that I am over it now. I don't even look at the Titans as the x-Oilers anymore. That ship has sailed for me personally.

I was asking, because I figured they could based on what we're talking about. If they took just one color which would be the blue mixed in with other colors then I don't see how legally they could claim that as property to them. I do get the points you're making though with it being the city they left that still wants that identity and everything though. But at the end of the day it is still just a color, and as long as we weren't duplicating the uniforms and they were still different than I would think it would be okay, but like you I'm not a lawyer either. I'm shooting the **** just like you on what I would speculate.

On another note, I'm sure the league itself has some sort of rule about the colors though just to make sure that teams uniforms aren't super similar. A lot of teams use the same colors using at least one in some cases two, so I do think that case would be hard to make for a lawyer but depending on what the league has in place, that would be interesting to find out. I've always thought that the Texans and the Patriots had very similar uniforms other than the silver that is in the Patriots which is the one thing that makes me like theirs and not ours.

The Houston Texans Don’t Have the Rights to Wear Oilers Throwback Jerseys. But They Should.


They're holding onto the Oilers' history merely for spite.

And the league can't make the Adams' do squat with it.

Somehow I totally overlooked this post earlier. There’s your answer and she’s doing it just for spite just like her dad was doing. Very cool that the players appreciate the Oilers history and what it means to the fans. Unfortunately the Texans organization doesn’t share in that. Even if Adams would give the name back I don’t see McNair being interested in it.

Also, Houston did nothing while cities like Cleveland sued to keep the team identity. I remember those days and being frustrated by that. My sister’s father in law back then was Bob Lanier so I was getting a lot of inside info from their point of view also. Anyway that’s all distant history now.

Gah! It would be awesome if we could get the Oilers' history back in Houston. We can't. We won't. What we CAN do is treat our hometown heroes as hometown heroes. The Texans brand is established, to continue alienating the players that helped shape generations of Houston football fans is next level egotism and ignorance. An Adams in Tennessee finally got Earl Campbell because the McNairs are too interested in being the Texans brand ... while 50 miles from Katy I can't get a Texans game if the Cowboys are playing. In the need to both compete against the Cowboys and distance from the Titans, we've become the island nation of Houston Texans.

Don't care about team colors or stats. Put Earl in a "Houston" ring of honor as part of the stadium. Recognize other greats like finally inducted Brazile. We're fans of the players on our teams because they're playing for OUR team. The HOUSTON team. They did amazing things in that former world wonder within walking distance of NRG Stadium ... and the daughter of (if you can't say something nice) has done more to reach out to our players than the guys who built their house next door.
