Tunsil - Thoughts after week 5

You have room under the cap to spend big $$$$ on 5 players. Who they spend it on is the key to having a successful franchise in the future.

I'm thinking they will spend the big $$$$ on Watson/Tunsil/Hopkins/Watt. Who's the 5th guy you would spend the $$$$ on, on the current roster or would you look into the FA market to sign a big $$$$ FA to fill a position of need?

Reader would be my 5th guy on the current roster and I love the job Mercilus has done this yr.

BTW, with the new CBA the cap may allow for 6-7 big $$$$ players.
The question may also come down to do what kind of team they want to be. Is it an offense focused team in which case I can see Fuller getting a nice pay day, assuming he stays healthy and plays like he did last week, and maybe Hyde or do they want more rounded in which case I agree it will be Reader or Mercilus. Really its still to early to see who is going to be the next person added to the "big contract" list. We should have a much better idea after the KC game. That's the first game where really everything will have to fire on all cylinders because even a hurt KC is still dangerous.

Next year they have $87 million in capspace. Tunsil and Watson will take about $50 million unless they don't get bumps until 2021

That leaves $37 million to sign Reader, mercilus, Cole, Roderick, boths tarting corners, starting TE, starting RB.

Hard to see how they won't lose key players

Peters would represent a new litmus test standard if the founders son agreed to a player with his colorful resume as acceptable, since don't forget that the first time around
Peters was off limits to the Texans and most other NFL franchises.

So should we just abandon every draft pick moving forward then? And since when did the Rams become the standard of all NFL franchises for management? They've been a laughing stock up until just 3 yrs ago. The 49ers just now got their **** together, and the Chiefs got lucky with Mahomes and failed miserably at fixing their defense in this past off season, so I wouldn't even hold any of those teams as some high standard. Hell, the Patriots have been by far the worst team in the league at 1st round picks over the last 5 years. If you want to trade your first round picks, then good great value for them. Don't get ripped off and throw them away.

The Texans weren't ready to compete for a SB this season, and that trade didn't put them in contention for it either especially when hours earlier we traded our biggest trade asset in Clowney and got nothing for it. There isn't a comparable trade in NFL history for what we panicked and gave up for Tunsil.
You used the Rams and 49ers as examples. I just quoted you. Do you not stand by your own words?

". . .teams like the Rams, Seahawks, 49ers, and the Chiefs have been able to build up really strong teams under smaller contracts for their QB's." (I literally cut & pasted your team examples.)

That said, I agree with you that these franchises did a great job of stocking up talent, which is why McVay could come in an win immediately. Shanny has been working at it for a few years, and his team is 4-0 and playing well with a very balanced team. Chiefs and Seahawks are two of the best teams in the NFL.

And did the Chiefs really just get lucky with Mahomes when they specifically moved up to draft him? Their actions undermine your speculation.

So should we just abandon every draft pick moving forward then?
You're putting words out there I never said. My point is that I don't have a lot of confidence in the Texans FO. Why should I?

They got proven talent with those picks. It's maybe 50/50 if the talent would have worked out if they used those picks in the draft, especially going without a GM.

At the end of the day, time will tell.

It's just a matter of chosen perspective, and it's okay if we disagree about it. I'm just not going to get worked up about my entertainment. It's fun to chat about, but just about everything here is speculations, assumptions, and opinions based on historical examples.

Rookie
He's 25 yrs pld and already one of the best pass blocking OT's in the NFL. You dont think he can improve his run blocking?

I think he's done really well since he's only been here 5 weeks. The OL as a whole hasn't been bad since they're playing Tunsil (Who's still getting acclimated) and 2 rookies. They should get even better the more they play together. I still look at Martin as the weakness in the OL.
Agree with your take on Tunsil. Still very expensive as far as draft capital, but we may have spent two 1sts trying to find someone of his caliber.

For me, the weakest link on the line is Scharping, but thats only because he is a rookie making rookie mistakes. There is no excuse for Martin, though he *is* improved this year.

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
My take.......it seems the Texans have the parts for a very good OL on the roster. They seem to be improving week to week which is a surprise since OB/Devlin have moved the pieces around each week. They can get much better and more consistent if OB maintains the modified offense that takes advantage of Watson's skill set (8 games) and locks his starting OL unit in and allows them to build continuity from week six through the playoffs.

You always talk about contract extensions as though it just up to the Texans to decide if they are going to sign a guy or not. News flash, the guy has to agree to the deal as well. Another news flash agents pay attention to the market and tell their client if they should wait about resigning in hopes of a better deal. If I was Tunsil's agent I would have told him "Hell no you don't sign an extension, do you see what the Raiders just paid Brown? That price is only going to go up in two years so you play out the rookie deal then you see who opens their wallet the widest." Same with Mercilus "Man you are making that city forget Clowney's name, you keep balling like that and teams will be knocking down your door so when the Texans come to you with a new contract you call me up and we see if we can't squeeze another 5 mill or so."

That is the reality of business, nobody has to sign anything.

They will have to probably choose between Reader and Mercilus. Or they could let JoJo walk saving another 12 mil. That would allow them to re-sign Mercilus or Roby (I would re-sign Roby and draft another CB.

That would leave Edge as a weak position. That would allow them to draft an edge of their liking in the 3rd or use the 3rd and 4-1 to move up into the 2nd for an edge if they really like one. I like Willikes from Michigan St. in the 2nd.

All of the other guys you listed are vet min type guys.

The CB's I like in the 2nd rd are Amik Robertson Robertson/Jeff Gladney. Cameron Dantzler is a guy I really like.

If Guys like Henderson from Fla or Levonta Taylor (Fla St.) who is a more of a slot CB but is really good I would trade into the top of the 2nd for those guys.

Edge's I like in the 2nd/3rd are Willikes (Michigan St) Jennings/Lewis (Alabama) Anae (Utah) Rector (USC) Weaver (Boise St.)

I didn't mean to hijack this thread but I wanted to show you this is a good yr for CB's/Edge's and good ones can be found in the 2nd/3rd rds. If you would like to take this to the draft section I will be happy to tell you what I like about these guys.

BTW, I will remind you I'm terrible at evals on CB's.

Good points.

Looks like the team for next year is hoping to not lose many key players to free agency and to fill holes through vet min and the draft. I don't like drafting for need though.

We don't have the money to go out and get an upgrade in free agency.

They need to get extensions for Watson and tunsil done too, which will be the priority.

Just like the Colts did with their OL last yr.

This team will only go as far as Watson learning where blitzers are coming from and delivering the ball accurately can take them. After watching last weeks game 2 things were obvious, 1. The Falcons didn't blitz much. 2. A few of the routes were shorter, but Watson hit some long throws just as much as he hit the short routes. I hope Watson continues to learn and use the middle of the field.

Unfortunately he's a young QB and will continue to be inconsistent this yr. But hopefully he will be ready to roll in 2021. Time will tell. Like I've said in other threads I expect another really good week for Watson against a beat up Chiefs defense.

What kind of contract would you give Roby to retain him? He should get an upper level mid tier contract say 3 yrs 30 mil with 15 mil guaranteed or something like that. Not a Watt/Hopkins/Tunsil type contract. IMHO

I definitely agree reader is the priority. I would be tempted to pay him then offer mercilus and Roby value deals. I don't think either of them is elite.

Mercilus is turning 30 so he might start declining anyway. Perhaps Martin can fill his spot.

Roby is a bigger need and younger, so I'd probably sign him first if he isn't too expensive.

Agreed. I'm excited about the team now. Much better than what we thought was going to be the OL at the start of training camp.

Come draft day & we don't have a 1st, I'll be upset.

But today, I'm looking forward to Sunday. With hope.

I don’t like Martin but this past week Fulton was the weak link. He wasn’t able to get much push up front and struggled from getting pushed back in pass pro. Hopefully it’s because of the back and he gets better as he heals.

Tunsil was seen as many as the #1 pick when he was drafted. He fell to Miami, aided by marijuana usage prior to the draft. He has character issues that were raised.

He’s a franchise level LT. If he stays healthy, he’s gonna play for another 10-12 years.

But it was a franchise defining type of gamble move. If it doesn’t yield you a good 7 years, or a deep playoff run , it will hinder the the franchise for years to come.
He has character issues? Tell me more

Enough struggling to go around.

Someone posted a gif here were Seth Payne (or somebody) was gushing over Tunsil mauling a defender on a 3 or 4 yard run.

What I saw was Tunsil & Scharping screwing up a double team block. Had they played it better, even without the mauling, just blocking the RB could have gotten 7 yards untouched.

According to Spotrac they'll have $92m.

Best case is that they extend Watson and Tunsil but their payday's don't hit the cap until the following year.

Mercilus , Roby and Reader are the big three for next offseason.

Have to find another corner and see what it takes to keep Hyde but the cap situation for next offseason isn't dire. Cole & Johnson are RFA and there probably isn't a huge market for Fells being a 36 year old TE.

Now 2021 is going to be tougher with Watson , Tunsil , Fuller and Cunningham all coming up at the same time.

Yeah it will be interesting to see how they will structure Watson and Tunsil contracts. Should be done before next season but they don't necessarily need to get big increases the first year.

Joseph and backup NT are also free agents.

$87m was from texanscap, not sure where the discrepancy is.

They may have to let Fuller and Cunningham walk in 2021. They're replaceable. Not easily but replaceable. Unless the new CBA gets done and the cap goes up as much as I think it will. About 20 mil.

People forget that the Texans can get another 12 mil in cap space by letting JoJo walk. I would put that $$$$ towards re-signing Roby and draft a CB in a deep 2020 CB class to replace JoJo.

They can find another WR to replace WFV. Look at the Raiders, they lost AB/Tyrell Williams is hurt and they traded for Trevor Davis (A fast guy) and Zay Jones and haven't missed a beat. (Late rd picks) They're changing the way they do business down on Kirby. (About time)

Do you think they can find another Stills type WR in trade in 2021? I do

He's certainly no Duane Brown. What's really grinding my gears is we still don't know what we have with Howard and never will. As the second lineman taken in the draft, somebody thought he had talent. Instead of exploring that talent to see where he fits in the NFL, he (and everyone else) was given the Sua'Filo treatment, and half way into the season has the coaching staff decided where to try him (and everyone else) next? Tunsil might have been completely unnecessary if we had real coaches, but we'll never know. Howard might have been a real LT if coached properly at the position, and instead we could possibly have thrown a couple second round picks at a mauling RT to compliment him. As only one person continues to draw my ire, and consistent coaching failures, I call Tunsil a fail so far in that he hasn't been worth two firsts. I'm not pointing to any faults because he's been ok, but 2 firsts needs to be "that's who we lean on for 10+ years" - not "could be better and contract".

We've spent so much money and picks on linemen, and they all turn out the same way. Fix the root of the problem. I mean no ill against Tunsil, it's not his fault how we got him. He's good ... strong hands, good feet, position and leverage are solid - hardly a flaw in his game. Better hips and drop than he has drive, but still solid. He's really good, and at this point is 100 miles from special ... in my opinion. I saw more out of Charles Spencer's preseason than I have with Tunsil. He's still young and has potential to grow into special (with coaching), but at the moment, he's "good".

86 JoJo and keep Will V. We saw last week, and a couple of other times, just how effective he can be. The only issue with him so far has been injuries and that's looking better. Question though, is Stills better than QT in the slot? They seem pretty equal to me, but Stills is the bigger target.

I agree let JoJo go and that Fuller had a great game but I say wait to see who is still standing at the end of this season before picking who our #2 WR is. The advantage we actually have is Fuller, Stills or Coutee would all fill that role just fine so we can afford to be picky.

What makes it such a bad match?
Well for one thing even if you still have to follow league rules not having to worry about being arrested can make people be more willing to risk that they might pop a drug test. We have the same issue in construction, always get more people that pop positive on randoms in legal states because the fear of arrest is gone so people that might not have tried it before will be more willing to try it.

Dudes in the nfl that get high are going to get high regardless of where they live.

In fact they all already know when testing occurs and what the most reasonable way to go about it is.

And as for the latter, and more specifically with Roby here, he's never been popped. So what does his being in Denver or Seattle or Houston or wherever have to do with his play in any sense that we can reasonably point to?

We're gonna' be alright. Actually, potentially much better than alright in the long run (assuming they sign him to a long term deal, which I would be shocked if it didn't happen):

LT Laremy Tunsil is getting comfortable in Texans offense

Since Week 1, Tunsil hasn’t allowed a sack. According to Pro Football Focus, he has allowed just three hurries in the last four weeks, no sacks and no hits. Over the previous two, he has allowed zero pressure on 86 pass-blocking snaps.

------------------------

Over the past three weeks, Tunsil has a combined 86.0 blocking grade, per Pro Football Focus, the analytics-based website, That ranks Tunsil third among all NFL offensive tackles during that span.

Duane Brown was not Duane Brown after three seasons. He didn't become a pro bowler until his 5th season if I remember correctly which was 2012. Tunsil had a bad game one with Houston, since then he has been very good and if it continues at that level he could be a Pro Bowl nominees in his fourth Season. I think after only 2 games at the same position we have a pretty clear idea of what we have in Howard. Not sure what you been watching. Everyone has been talking about how good this o line has been since game 2. As you said Howard may have become a good left tackle but he is a good right tackle. I'll settle for what we have. Don't forget that we have tunsil starting at left tackle protecting our franchise quarterback for a whole season before that first round pick in 2020 is selected. Also picking even at middle of pack I don't think any left tackle would compare to tunsil going into his second year 2020 on our roster. Another point is his cap for 2019 is actually a bit less than Howard's. Your post would have made sense immediately after game 1 But as time goes by it loses any validity.

What makes it such a bad match?

I'll just say this - being one who thinks it should be legalized:

If you cant not smoke pot before the draft , knowing you are gonna piss in a cup and knowing millions of dollars are on the line …. then your decision is suspect at best.

Don't know how many we see fail that pre draft pisser every year …. and they fall a couple rounds costing themselves a pile of dough.

About 1 month ago I introduced two of my neighbors to each other. One has a job making approximately $9 an hour the other owning a million-dollar company and wanting to hire him at a minimum $16 an hour. The one wanting job was up front said he is a heavy pot smoker but could clean up and would immediately submit an application. As of now no application submitted. Of course it could be more than just not giving up the pot but it does look suspicious.

IIRC, he didn't fail a wizz quiz at the draft, but was photographed with the mask some time in college. Could have been his freshman year or...... Certainly a dumb thing to do. Seems like stuff like that always makes into social media these days.

It was supposedly his step dad who posted the picture . He was mad at Tunsil who beat his butt for mistreating his mother .

What does that have to do with Bradley Roby?

The fact that you think you saw more out of Charles Spencer than you've seen out of Tunsil says it all. Not that it's a be all end all but you should go check out PFF's OT ratings.

If you consider Tunsil worth a 1st and he is, then they really only gave up an extra 1st to get him. Not two 1sts.

I also think they found out pretty quickly in TC that Howard was a RT. They started him off at LG to get him some experience and the plan was to move him to RT eventually. That plan got sped up do to Henderson's suckage.
