State of the O-line

Did the Colts rookies suck last yr on their OL?

Well they started two rookies, one of whom was the #6 pick and one a second rounder.

What they did is rare and they were not planning to start the second rounder.

If that's the plan... Good luck because it doesn't happen very often

The Texans may have a player evaluation problem.

Tweet from @PFN365: .@TonyPauline: The #Texans had Tytus Howard graded better than Andre Dillard. Furthermore, if both were there, they might've taken Howard anyways.

This was also confirmed to me by a league source.

They were planning on starting the 2nd rder at OG but moved him out to RT when Goode got hurt.

Obviously you dont know what your talking about.

What's funny about that tweet is it says they "might" have drafted Howard if Dillard fell to 23.

Why is it a question is the Texans had him higher?

im really trying hard not to believe that report. reading through the comments the veracity of that statement and who it comes with should be taken with a grain of salt.

with that said does it sound like something this regime would be capable of doing? Absolutely.

Probably would have been better drafting Josh Jacobs. At least OB knows how to run the RB up the middle. No developing required.

Other teams have done this too.

Ever heard of Zack Martin/Tyrann Smith

So the other example is 5 years ago? Yes sometimes it happens. But statistically it's rare.

Also those guys were legit first rounders unlike Howard and Scharping

There are other examples I just thought I would try to pick out an example of a team that you might know with your limited knowledge.

Smells a bit like OBrien overruled the scouts because tytus is more versatile and used to play qb

Well I dunno where those two played their collegiate ball because chances are they saw much better competition before coming into the NFL than our rookies did ?

True but I was just pointing out that it does happen

I'm more concerned with the "might've" part.

If they had Howard graded higher there shouldn't be any "might've"

Whether the transformation happens or not, BOB has given Watson the best tutor he could possibly get. Now it's on Watson to improve.
I'm actually giving O'Brien credit for recognizing he wasn't the best guy to develop Watson. When I look back every QB O'Brien coached was a pocket statue ...Hoyer, Mallet, Savage, Brady, Oz... not one of them had close to the mobility Watson has. At least BO'B recognized his limitations and went out and got the right man for that job.

...see... I can say something nice about O'Brien

Agreed. These yahoos picked Hopkins over Patterson & Kjax over Wilson.

They do it all the time.

Smartest guys in the room.

In theory Watson's protection should be much improved this year:

Offensive line should definitely be improved.
With Fells & Paulsen our TE blocking should also be significantly better.
Duke Johnson is supposed to be a good blocking RB.

Granted all of this is just on paper at this point but I hope we can at least cut Watson's sack total in half.

"Pretty good idea"?

Really?

Fulton has turf toe and while that sounds minor, can have serious implication to effectiveness of play. Howard has a broken finger. Depending on how this is taped up I could see it effecting his ability to grab. Martin has returned from his injury but is he in playing shape?

Injuries always have the potential to play havoc with a starting line up.

Martin didn't look ready in preseason. Got pushed back easily

It was a pre-season game. If you were a coach would you not want to see you OC, from the previous year, under game.conditions with the starters.

I still have some hope, admittably tiny, and depending on practice this past week, that OB will start Fulton at OC if his turf toe permits.

Fulton is back at full participation today.

Correct, but this doesn't mean he's 100%. Effects from a serious case of tuff toe can linger all season but I don't know how serious his injury was. Certainly need CnnD.
OB recently said they know who’s going to start Monday. Implied it’s the guys they have been playing the most. That would seem to rule out Martin but yeah, the toe.

If Dillard was the guy many on this board feel he is, why was he there in the 20s? Normally, no questions asked left tackles are taken top half of 1st rd, correct?

I'm gonna say something I haven't before. People might not like it. As Dillard dropped in the draft I thought we might/should trade up for him. The closer he got the less I felt the need for a trade.

When he was 1 pick away with a team that didn't need ol I thought we damn sure better NOT trade up for him.

How many people here would've been pissed to trade a 3 to move 1 (1 damn spot) in the draft for dillard?

It's easy now with hindsight to say we shouldve. At the time I thought we'd be stupid to grab someone already falling.
