Yea from what I've read he's only worked at RT. Where else could he play? He's too weak to play inside. Sad part is no matter where you put him he's probably good for what 2-3 false starts a game? But its easier to swallow a 4th round bust .. if Tytus Howard doesnt work out? Yikes.

At least with Williams you have a guy that can actually show the young guys what it takes to play at a high level. What are Kalil and Henderson going to show the young guys? How to get hurt?

I would actually say Davenport managed to be mediocre at LT at the latter half of last season.

He was a disaster at RT. Kalil is a disaster at LT. Naturally that's where OBrien has them.

I'd start Davenport at LT with Tytus as getting backup reps and Kalil just minimum salary insurance.

It would be the least bad choice

I've personally seen enough of Davenport .. I'd rather one of the younger guy get the reps. Its one thing to have bad mechanics and be limited skill wise, but its another to commit dumb mental mistakes and Davenport just shot drives down on his own with no situational awareness last year, same with Clowney going offsides, except that Clowney is you know ... good.

I'm all for replacing Davenport for someone legitimately good. Hopefully easterby can wheel and deal for Williams.
 
Physical vet


Matt Kalil wasn't an exciting addition to the Texans, but he has been more than solid at camp. He got smoked by Whitney Mercilus on one rep today but held his own for the rest I saw. One play saw him throw a defensive lineman down, then block another downfield as he cleared the way for the running back. If the Texans had to play a game tomorrow, he would be the left tackle.

Not Rankin real high so far


Martinas Rankin is struggling in camp. He is getting work on the interior of the offensive line but he has yet to put together an impressive or solid performance. He disappointed last year after getting hurt and missing some camp. He has seemingly been healthy, but he hasn't shown much. The numbers game is getting tight on the offensive line and Rankin might have to hope the investment, a third rounder last year, gets him some leeway.

Angelo Blackson dominates, slams D'Onta Foreman in goal-line drill

In a physical goal-line drill Wednesday, Texans veteran defensive end Angelo Blackson showed why the team rewarded him this offseason with a three-year, $12 million contract.

Blackson busted through an attempt to block him and slammed running back D'Onta Foreman to the ground.


Blackson, who received $3.5 million guaranteed, is a valuable rotational contributor.

The 6-4, 319-pound former New England Patriots practice squad member recorded 24 tackles and one sack last season, appearing in every game with four starts.

The "red area" offense appears to be in midseason form
 
Foreman might be done. Not knocking him as not many can come come back from an Achilles and still be successful. Here’s hoping he improves, but I’m not holding my breath.
 
Sounds like RT might be our biggest issue. Not sure why we didn't try to re-sign Lamm. He was our best OL last year. (Not saying much but would have solidified the line this year)

Exactly. I understand lamm was mediocre at best, but he was better than Seantrel and unproven rookies. Or find someone better

According to PFF, lamm was the 50th ranked tankle last year.

The last time Seantrel was healthy (2015) he was ranked 70.

Also lamm has been regularly playing and getting slightly better. Seantrel has just been trying to get healthy. And reports out of camp are rough

As a direct response to Solder’s exit, the Patriots drafted Georgia lineman Isaiah Wynn with the 23rd pick of that year’s draft, a player they envisioned starting right away at either left tackle or left guard (with tackle being the more ideal situation, of course).

Interesting that their plan was to start their 23rd pick at LG. It's about time the Texans started doing things like the more successful teams in the league.

Injury wise he's held up pretty good and missed very few games so in that regard his age doesn't bother me. As far as being a two year rental I'm fine with that to as that will give us time and breathing room to get a long term fix, whether it be Howard or someone else, in place if we do have to let him go because of Watson's pay day.

5 yrs and if you have to let Clowney walk after this yr to get Williams, you do it.
 
The coaches on defense have to be smiling ear to ear when they see Reader work in camp. He has been fantastic in all his reps. Rarely is a lineman beating him or pushing him to a draw. He wins rep after rep. If Reader keeps this up, the Texans defensive line could be even stronger than it has been.

It has been to up and down for Seantrel Henderson. Not enough consistency. Physical mistakes are one thing but mental are another. Going to have to clean it up in a hurry. #Texans

Matt Kalil has had a better camp than I expected. Holding up well and a much better run blocker than I anticipated. Has to keep trending up heading to Green Bay. #Texans

The interior of the offensive line appears to be holding up. Issues happening off the edges. #Texans

Quick thoughts on today. More on the site later. One of the more disappointing days for the offense since the start of camp. Easily their worst day of camp. Usually they are able to move the ball consistently but not the case today. #Texans

I'm sorry but I still don't understand. You said Davenport can be counted on for 2-3 false starts a game. Over 16 games that's 32 to 48 false starts for the year, so yes that is exactly what you said.

According to the link I provided he only commented 5 for the whole year. That's one every three games give or take.

Are you saying that's too many?
 
Defense wins the day


The defense were the big winners today. They got to Deshaun Watson a few times and were terrors to most of the wideouts. This is to be expected with question marks at some of the spots for the starting offensive line and the defense having almost every starter from last year back as well. They're ahead but the offense was able to rattle off some yards. It wasn't smooth for the offense as much as start and stop.



Tytus the key?


Tytus Howard had a day off and will be back working with the team Saturday. The various players filling in for him didn't bring his level of success against the defense. He is really carving out a nice role for this team. If you had said the Texans would draft a starter with their first round pick, we all would have been happy right?



Whitney's way back


Whitney Mercilus is in the final year of his contract with the Texans and after a down year last year looks poised to punish offenses. He has worked the Texans tackles all camp rarely coming away with a loss in his rep. Today he flashed through the line forcing Watson to step up into more pressure. He could be a key player for this pass rush if he rushes more than last year.



Ball security issues


I wouldn't put this on Deshaun Watson as much as the right side of the offensive line but there were a couple of forced fumbles. J.J. Watt shook loose and knocked the ball out of Watson's hands. Another couple players got a forced fumble or affected the throw by Watson. Not a good showing for the right guards and tackles today.



Backup spots up for grabs


Not only are there plenty of starting spots up for grabs on the offensive line, the players who don't end up starting are battling with each other for the few backup spots. The Texans always keep an extra tackle, extra interior player who can snap the ball, and another lineman. That would be eight. It is hard to see them keeping nine. Plenty of spots to be had if someone can separate themselves from the pack.

Texans' defense excels, forces fumbles in goal-line drill

The Texans' defense was dominant again during a training camp goal-line drill.


Running backs D'Onta Foreman and Damarea Crockett lost fumbles. Undrafted rookie Karan Higdon scored a touchdown.

The ball security needs improvement, as does the blocking.

"I just think it one of those days where I felt like it would get it going earlier get the energy going, and it was good," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "The defense did a good job. We got to hold onto the ball.

"I think we fumbled twice down there, two or three times. So, it was good to get the energy going, but the execution wasn't great."

I am not sure who will be scoring on the Texans defensive line. They have rarely been pushed by the Texans offensive line on the ground. When Watt and Reader are leading the pack they just smash people. I can't wait to see them work against other teams and better offensive lines. Green Bay could be a fun test. If you want to score on the Texans in the red area you better throw.


Watt vs the world









J.J. Watt showed off for his parents at practice today working over just about everyone he faced. I feel bad for the Packers linemen. Watt bull rushed Matt Kalil almost into Deshaun Watson on one play. He has looked great in camp and frankly needs some days off so the offense can actually work. Kalil looked solid on his other reps. He's had a nice camp.

Play of the day


It felt like the first goal line rep of the day and the Texans defense was fired up after forcing a fumble. It looked like a few different defenders ended up contributing to the play. On offense, Keke Coutee kept moving when Deshaun Watson extended a play and extended out to make a great snag.

Howard credits his teammates and coaches for getting him to this point. He is using all of that information and support to produce on the field.

"Just going out each and every day I feel I have got better day-by-day," Howard said after practice. "I've been taking in a lot of Coach Devlin's techniques. He has been teaching me and I'm just going out on the field and applying it. I got guys like Greg Mancz, Nick Martin, Zach Fulton, Matt Kalil. Guys, vets that are helping me out along the way. I got Max (Scharping.) beside me, Me a Max and compete against each other, to make each other better. "

This tweet was in response to a tweet saying that Howard was playing with the "expected sloppiness." Starr was saying the sloppiness was not a surprise.

After tonight we are still playing injury musical chairs with our two centers. Hopefully one of them can play next game.

Thats a little infuriating honestly. How indecisive these coaches are with developing talent is such a disservice to the team and the players. Not really Howards fault there since its a completely different set of skills necessary to play LT in the NFL. He commits the cardinal sin of lunging and thats all she wrote. Im sure at Alabama Tech it was much easier to catch up to those guys, but on Sundays? Forget about it. If these yahoos on kirby dont get this kid more action on that island, between he and Kalil - Watson is going to get hurt. I'd ALMOST say he's better off with Davenport out there and Im probably going to go the mirror after hitting "post reply" and look deep in my eyes and slap the piss out of myself, but what I saw from the LT play last night was that bad.
