Texans Position Improvement

Now that Free Agency and the Draft are over. Lets look and see where we improved and where we got worse from 2018-2019. I'm only taking into account Player additions and subtractions, no year by year improvement from players.

QB-Improved
RB-Stayed the Same
WR-Stayed the Same
OL- Improved with 3 new additions
TE-Improved

DL-Stayed the Same, possible slight improvement/Regression
LB-Stayed the Same
Safety-Regressed
CB-Improved

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
Did safety regress?

Reed will be better. Gipson is better on te's which regularly kill us and cheaper.

Wr will be better if they stay healthy.

Lb's are fairly young and should naturally get better.

Special teams should get better.

Will the schedule show that? Idk.

Hard to make a thread about position improvement if we're not factoring player improvement going from rookie to year 2 development which is usually when NFL players make their biggest jump.
I did it because every fan base thinks ever position just gets better. If we did that then you could say that every position on the Texans is better then last year with another year of experience.

Rookies are almost always TBD, especially when none of them are considered day 1 starters or even definite future starters. This entire class needs development time.

Also, Clowney very well may hold out all year so that would be a huge downgrade.

I don't think the Chiefs are thinking their WR room is better than last year right at this moment with the Tyreek Hill situation looming.

Doubt the Steelers think their WRs are better either.

I agree safety is weaker on Texans than last season and obviously if Clowney decides to holdout...

Yes because its taking into consideration a addition or a subtraction like I said..

Texans fans would say.
QB-Improved
RB-Improved with Foreman back
WR-Improved with coutee for whole season
TE-Improved cause of young players
OL-Improved because of additions and young player growth

DL-Improved
LB-Improved because of young player growth
Safety-Improved because Reid improves so much
CB-Improved

So fans think just about every area of the team every year will be better. But in reality the Texans really upgraded just a few position. OL, CB, TE

Oline has to be better CB is still a concern and I expect it to be a position of need next year as well. We have 3 CB's on the roster on 1yr or the last year of their contracts we really need to find 3-4 CB's this weekend and next years draft to fix it.

OL improved. Howard is an upgrade, so is Scharping. Both look like guards though. Howard has the size and feet to be a right tackle. Like the TE and CB too. Hoping we get away from that soft zone mess

Fortunately all 3 are starters and Chris Johnson should get looks TC at corner and although I prefer him at safety, Lonnie Johnson was drafted. Still possible Clowney could bring a vet.

Way too early to think about next year, but I wouldn't be surprised if Edge Rusher or DB was our top pick/need next year. Maybe interior OL. Roby will almost certainly draw TY Hilton this year, and if he can lock him down, I see him getting a nice contract to return here

We have to wait at least 5 games into the regular season to make a definitive case on these positions. Right now all we're doing is playing the guessing game. Yes of course we the fans have a strong habit of throwing out there this got better and that got better. Using me as an example, I quickly came to the conclusion that our secondary would be much improved with the addition of Badger ( took out the honey because I remember catching hell for using that part of his name) bwhahaha and Colvin. Oh how I was completely wrong. Therefore, I'm going to stick to the golden rule of waiting until at least 5 games are played to gauge these additions.

Are we reading the same MB? Looking around this place you'd think the only decent players we have are Watson, Hopkins and Watt and even they are questionable at times.

IMO, that's not a valid assumption. We pretty much know Alfred Blue, Kendall Lamm, Ryan Griffin, JJo, Watt, Clowney, Kareem Jackson, Honey Badger, et al, may have good years but have likely topped out. They may get smarter and cagier, but that won't always make up for the ravages of age, wear, and tear. That's why a lot of those guys aren't here any longer.

  1. OL room: big jump up in raw talent and potential, but who's the Center? That concerns me. Time to churn the bottom of the OL roster.
  2. DB room: better, but by how much is TBD. Big learning curve for the new blood. Upgrades are still needed. Can RAC maximize what's there?
  3. TE room: better, especially if Ryan Griffin is no longer there. The young guys will have to grow up fast.
  4. FB: definitely better than last year, seeing that we didn't have one. He'd better be a terrific lead blocker and QB protector, plus decent outlet receiver. He could be an unexpected boon and difference maker to the offense for a few plays per game.
  5. RB: TBD. Addition by subtraction with Alfred Blue gone, but what's still there is mighty thin. Hopefully there will be new blood that can block and average 3.5+ ypc.
  6. WR room: TBD, really depends on health, learning curve, and play design.
  7. QB: Better coaching couples with experience to keep Watson on the upswing. The backup QB hopefully won't be needed, but if he is, the impact is TBD. I would love be to see RG3 in that spot.
  8. DL: TBD. Need more push up the middle and better scheming for Mercilus. Gonna miss Covington, so it's time for the younger guys to shine as rotational players.
  9. LB: Unchanged. Could stand a big upgrade in speed. Maybe next year.
  10. Special teams: TBD

If Roby does well then this will be another HB situation.

Yeah I’m stupid to think we’ll pay him. We let good talent walk because of “the market” and then we’ll go and throw stupid money at a bunch of guys that suck. Like, letting Bouye walk and bringing in Colvin. Out with Quin, in with Ed Reed. Letting brooks walk and “replacing” him with Jeff Allen/Zach Fulton/senio kelemente..trading brown and replacing with julien Davenport...I guess we’ll see if Gipson/tytus/Roby are good.

Damn, I’m pissed again.

The problem with free agency is it takes 2 to tango.

All they had to do was pay up. I mean, Antonio Brown demanded a trade from a super bowl contender to a bottom feeder just because they’ll pay him. I’ve said it in another post 99% of these guys care about primarily money and the opportunity to play. Winning a super bowl is the goal during the season but getting the best contract possible is the goal of every player in the offseason considering most careers last less than a decade and you’re lucky to get a 2nd contract. If you can get a 3rd contract you’re as lucky as they get. So you get what you can when you can

To be fair Pats and other teams were in on Brown as well. Pats reportedly offered more draft compensation to Raiders but the Steelers sent him to Raiders because the Pats are more of a threat.

Yeah and I mean just going back to the point 99% of these guys really don’t care where they play in their prime. They want the money, and opportunity to showcase their talent. The only time you have a player choose a team offering less money (and it has to be real damn close) is if they’re a veteran in the last year or two chasing a potential ring, the opportunity to play close to home, or a young guy who feels they can come here and play well for the short term to get a larger contract the following season. Our problem is we weren’t aggressive in free agency, or the draft. And you usually have to be major players in one of the two to advance into that next echelon of teams
