Offensive Tackle from Alabama State.
6'5" 322 lbs.
Has good speed and quickness for his size. Very athletic. Can play either Left or Right Tackle.
Good in run and pass blocking.
Needs improvement in technique and could use time in the weight room to build better strength.
Looks to be a good pick in the first round for our Texans to fill a very important need to protect Watson.

I hear he had the most wins (1 on 1) out of all tackles this past season, and that he’s a damn good run blocker as well. Hoping for the best!
Actually I believe that was solely at the Senior Bowl plus he played at Alabama State so not really talking about top notch competition. So yeah just got to hope for the best. Haven't seen anyone grade him as a first rounder though it is said he has a high ceiling.

So what‘s the plan? Sitting him most of the season to learn, plugging him in at RT for a season or throwing him in at LT if we find out Kahlil is as bad as people assume he is?

Tytus Howard assured #Texans coaches they did not make a mistake.

Tytus Howard on being a former quarterback: 'I know how being sacked feels. I try not to let anybody hit the quarterback.'

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) April 26, 2019

Tytus Howard said the #Texans feel he can play right tackle, left tackle or guard. He’s practiced at guard before.

— Aaron Reiss (@aaronjreiss) April 26, 2019

Don’t sleep on Tytus Howard, man. He was definitely an undervalued prospect and he has Duane Brown potential. Let’s just give him a chance. pic.twitter.com/lIyOly107i

The Texans needed a left tackle and Howard was one of three true left tackles available in the first 50 picks. I have to tell you, what he does and how he plays reminds me of Duane Brown when he came out of Virginia Tech. Needs work, but talentedhttps://t.co/NskHGz03RN

— Lance Zierlein (@LanceZierlein) April 26, 2019

If Taylor is a healthy player, he should be the pick here, but I just found out that he has a flagged knee with some teams. Other teams don’t think it’s bad. Montez Sweat could be a surprise pick as BPA. 36" arms, 4.41 forty, 39" vertical, 22.5 sacks over 2 years in SEC w/30 TFLs https://t.co/TUCu8sZbYV

— Lance Zierlein (@LanceZierlein) April 26, 2019

There is no prayer the Texans see Cody Ford as a tackle. I see him as a guard. He’s 6’3. Brian Gaine has physical standards for the position and it’s unlikely Ford met them as a tackle.

Nothing is better than people on twitter telling me about an Alabama State tackle and how bad he is and what a terrible pick is. I don’t know why I wasted time on his five games of tape as well as the time I spent on him at Senior Bowl. I should have just asked JefF from twitter.

Been a while gentleman... good to post some Texans thoughts again.

BOb and Houston have been one of the highest run oriented offenses since he took over the mantle. Dillard was coming from a Leach Air Raid offense and was known as a mediocre to worse run blocker.

Howard, on the other hand, was known as one of the nastier run blocking tackles with the measurements to become a premier LT.

As noted PFF gave him the most 1 on 1 wins of any tackle in the draft. I know many don’t value PFF, but they are respected throughout the NFL.

For those who wanted Ford, he is more of a guard and we don’t need more guards posing as tackles.

Here is a nice thorough breakdown of Howard.

Good pick....yes

Good first round pick....that maybe a stretch.

This guy would have been there second or possibly even third round. It has all the signs of getting spooked by the Eagles leap frogging them.

Hey Mr Know it all Lz. …. We don't hate the player , we hate the idea of taking a project when there were other options and this project would most likely have been there in the 3rd / 4th round.

Yeah , maybe this project turns into a solid player , that doesn't change the fact that the Texans didn't get "Value" at the pick. They reached and reached FAR. Could have taken the #1 WR or #1 CB off the board and gotten this guy at pick 54 / 55 or later.

This reminds me of the Duane Brown pick. Everybody was pissed for taking a supposedly 3rd round pick in the 1st round. But it turned out ok.

Hope this guy turns out to be that good …. but damn , the grades were from 4th-7th round , why your #1 when you have two picks in the next round and so much talent available on both sides of the ball.

I see a lot of round 2-3 projections. Not many recent boards with him that low.

Hes nasty...I'll give him that.

I feel like an opportunity was missed here. Either trade up to get Dillard or grab Taylor at 23 and trade up in the 2nd to get this guy. I guess they can try to trade up and get Taylor ...

Looks like the medical issues on Taylor turning teams off as he was picked by many to go #7. I'm even more intrigued with round two and three now.

Brian Gaine says he’s "not concerned at all" about the jump in level of competition OT Tytus Howard will make from Alabama State to the NFL.

— Aaron Reiss (@aaronjreiss) April 26, 2019

Brian Gaine mentions Tytus Howard's performance at the Senior Bowl as something that impressed the #Texans.

Brian Gaine on Tytus Howard and Andre Dillard: 'Both fit the bill for what we look for at the position. Both good players.'

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) April 26, 2019

Gaine said Andre Dillard and Tytus Howard had similar profiles. Declined to discuss anything involving trades.

Nah, I had Duane Brown exactly at the spot where he was taken (8th OT overall) and a great fit for the Texans because he was in a ZBS in college.

Medical issues and on field issues. Several of us, including you (at least at one point) and I weren't that high on him to start with.

Brian Gaine on Tytus Howard's backstory: "If anything that's going to be a strength of his. … He'll understand what a quarterback has to deal with, what a tight end has to deal with. That's a very unique skillset."

— Aaron Reiss (@aaronjreiss) April 26, 2019

Brian Gaine said rookie tackle Tytus Howard plays with nastiness. 'He's going to be a good addition to the offensive line room. It's a great story. Quarterback to tight end to offensive line. It's a great story about development. He'll have a full understanding."

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) April 26, 2019

I see why OT Tytus Howard has so many visits, look at how patient and deep he gets in his vert set. Flashes a circle punch then sets the pocket. pic.twitter.com/rrJK8vDY52

His "grades" were assigned by media guys that don't know anything about football. That doesn't mean NFL teams feel the same.

Zero chance he would have been there at #54.

Maybe not but …. could you not get your choice of every corner (or WR) in the draft then trade up in the second to and get this guy ?

Just seems like a wasted opportunity.

No , it was just sarcasm …. LZ acting like he's the Encyclopedia Britannica and everyone else is stupid.
Yeah like many and even some here, LZ tends to believes his own tea leaves. I want to check his round one mock for accuracy. Rob Rang was rated high for accuracy for 2018 IIRC but only got 3 of 32 and two of those were first two picks and hey as a former coach use to say I got those right.

Lance Zierlein had 7 of first 32 correct including four of first five.

Nice article.
He is a fast learner with great measurables and he can learn better technique with his hands with further coaching.
Has high ceiling.

Now we'll wait and see what the Texans do tomorrow night. So far the draft hasn't turned me into a Gaines fan just yet.
