Texans random thought of the day

Wont be for long with hits he takes.

We know this how?

Roger Staubach's career sack rate was just shy of as high as Watson's and he damn sure never broke.

But I agree, no point in testing.

Why stretch for an hof outlier when the league is filled with so many who had promise and cracked?

This is semantics I think. We agree not to test it. We agree (I assume) the blocking has to get better. We agree (I assume) Watson will mature faster without those hits.

Curious on your stat source. R.S. started in 79. Sacks stats began in 82. He totaled 313 sacks in 11 years by my source (28.45 per year.)

Watson was sacked 62 times last year.

Wasn't a stretch. I grew up watching Staubach. Rodger "the Dodger" also would create time to make plays even when it meant taking a hit. Drove Landry insane.

Watson could have avoided 20-30 sacks last year but the overall offense would have suffered.

Agree generally, just not sell the farm about it & believe there is more than OL which can be done to keep Watson cleaner.

Far more then the ol can be fixed to protect Watson. I'd love to see it but not sure OB can do it.

I know your an rs fan. I never saw him play. Again just curious about your source info.

Neither am I.

Grew up in Austin and Dallas so Dallas fan until I bought PSLs for Houston in 2001 (maybe 2000, as soon as they went on sale). So basic source is watching every game Staubach played along with a lot of other Dallas stars. Think I've mentioned how much JJ Watt reminds me of Bob Lilly. But verified my memory by looking at pro-football-reference.com.

Agreed about Staubach

Without Watson pulling a Houdini act he easily could've been sacked another 20 times. The OL was that bad. Go back and watch the Tacks games and Philly as a point of reference.

Agreed, but a couple of decent OL would certainly help.

Use whatever figure from history we like. A few more seasons like the last and Watson will be a shell of his potential.

2nd rd Lt.
3rd c/g

I'd like to see mancz get a bigger role. If Martin cant cut it, I he needs to sit. I dont give a damn about his draft status.

That should be the mantra for the whole team.
Scouts and coaching staff too.

Which is funny & true but highlights something. Contrary to the "oh no, the Carr is falling" crowd, generally Watson is reacting well and learning.

Every qb has a breaking point. Lets not find his.

Yes & no.

Again I have to stress how much David Carr helped get to that breaking point, & yes DeShaun Watson is following that same path. I agree the Texans aren't helping the situation. I agree better talent on the OL will help. But Watson has the biggest culpability here.

The OL is bad. He has to know this. We do. After 16 games we should not be able to say, "He holds the ball to long." Though the line isn't great it implies they did their job "well enough" that we can see he held the ball too long.

After 16 games (it's actually 22 now right) we shouldn't be able to say, "He didn't see the free rusher."

The Texans need to do better by DeShaun Watson. But had David Carr wanted to be great, he wouldn't have been the bust he was. Blaine frik'n Gabbert earned a 2nd starting job in the NFL. Ryan Fitzpatrick never gave up earning starting job after starting job, even a "franchise" contract. Too many QBs not as talented went looking for jobs they would have an opportunity to start. Not so with David Carr.

I compared attempts per sack. He played 1969 thru 1979 (during which the Cowboys went to the SB 5 times), 14 game seasons except 16 the last 2. Pro-football-reference.com has sacks for each year.

Trivia, in 1964 he was drafted in the 10th round by the Dallas Cowboys & 16th round by the Kansas City Chiefs. His entry was delayed by a 4 year Navy commitment including a voluntary tour in Vietnam.

Is mediocrity in sports writer so well regarded as in Houston?

Considering the dribble I read in most yahoo articles, McClain is Hemingway.

And I don't especially like the guy.

Using proref:

Starbauch was sacked 2.38 times per game. (Which is amazing to me considering his success.)

Watson's been sacked 3.52 times per game.

Drafted in 64 and no stats till 69. Wow.

You saw the part about serving in the Navy after graduating from Annapolis?

I did and was vaguely familiar with it beforehand. Always thought it was 2 years for some reason.

Those extra years in the nfl likely put him the conversation for top 5 QBs ever.

Yeah, I know it's always been before the draft, just haven't heard much about it like it seems we used to.

Wow you know this Draft and the weeks leading up to it are so much more interesting and exciting for us Texans fans than last years when we did not have a single pick until the third round.

After this past offseason... not sure I'm going to make the effort to watch.

New Texans safety Tashaun Gipson on his well-known knack for covering elite tight ends: "Just know that the best tight ends that are coming into NRG, I'm gonna put the clamps on them" Gipson on Texans sophomore Justin Reid: "He's almost too smart. He's the guy who knows everything. I ask him a lot of questions." Gipson on Tyrann Mathieu: "I respect his game, but I'm a different guy. One guy tweets a lot, I don't have twitter."
