Trading Clowney and the FA period isn't done yet.

I'm rooting for a comeback win. If they can trade Clowney and not sign any more FA's along with trading down in the draft, while the Colts sign 4-5 more FA guys and trade up in the draft the Texans or can pull off a comeback salary cap championship like the Pats did against Atl in the real SB.

We've gotta root for somekind of championship and the Texans org is alot closer to winning this than they've ever been to winning anything on the field.

BTW, The McNair's and the man behind the scenes Olson are the very definition of bland. I'm mean what decent FA would want to come play for those guys longterm?

You have no idea how Cal & Olsen are behind the scenes. For that matter no idea about other front offices or player impressions either. All we know is end results and occasionally some offer info. You're just filling in to fit your narrative again.
 
Four Big Questions About The Houston Texans After Free Agency

If the outset of NFL free agency is a fire hose, then we are most certainly down to the point in the free agency calendar where the faucet has been turned off, and all we are seeing, hearing, and feeling are small droplets from the free agency hose.

And while some teams got soaking wet in the free agency fire hose, the Texans, by and large, handled free agency like they had five umbrellas and a plastic slicker on. They caught a few drops, but still nearly their entire wardrobe is dry and intact. (That's a metaphoric way of saying they still have a BLEEP ton of salary cap space.)

So now, barring a lower level signing here and there, we wait for the NFL Draft to get here on April 25, the night when the Texans will presumably tab their left tackle or cover cornerback of the future. As we wait for the next three weeks to tick away, here are the most pressing questions around the Texans right now:

Are the Texans a better football team now than they were on March 13?
In the end, this is what really matters — are the Texans moving in the right direction? If you look at each of their individual moves in free agency, I think you can make an argument that each of them marks some level of improvement. Swapping out Tyrann Mathieu and KareemJackson for a total of $25 million per year, and swapping in Tashaun Gipson and Bradley Roby for a total of $17 million per year makes sense. I'd be really worried about the implications of having Mathieu on this roster as the highest paid safety in football. Darren Fells should supplant Ryan Griffin as the third tight end. That's good. A.J. McCarron is an upgrade over Brandon Weeden at backup quarterback. The thought of Matt Kalil for 16 starts at left tackle is slightly less terrifying than the thought of Julien Davenport back there again, so I GUESS that's improvement? Anyway, the moves all make sense, but their collective impact doesn't change my concern level that this coming season feels more like 8-8 than 12-4 right now.

Has Brian Gaine placed a big, fat target on himself?
So as we sit there with over $36 million in cap space and with some glaring needs still existing on this roster, there can be no doubt — Brian Gaine is the Texans employee who is under the most pressure right now, and quite honestly, he has chosen the route that's created this pressure by eschewing free agency. The fact of the matter is that Gaine's approach, valuing the draft exponentially over free agency, is probably the right way to approach roster building, but it's the method that creates the most angst in March. If Gaine's first draft in 2018 is any indication (Justin Reid, Keke Coutee, the two rookie tight ends), then we should be excited for the upcoming 2019 draft, in which the Texans have four of the top 86 selections.

Why are they hoarding all this cap space?
As of this typing, the Texans have around $36 million in cap space, according to Spotrac. As highlighted earlier, Gaine's frugality in free agency has been a source of much frustration for Texans fans, but with the Texans having the ability to carry the unused cap space into 2020, fans need to understand the potential shopping list and internal contractual to-do items next offseason:

I get people's frustration, but there is a big picture at work here that needs to, at least, be acknowledged.

As unlikely as it is, the Texans winning the Super Bowl is much more likely than the Jaguars and Ravens winning it.

Honestly, I see no problem with the odds we're getting. 8-8/9-7 is probably where we'll end up based on the schedule we have to play, and we're not winning the super bowl, so I really don't care what odds we're getting there. Our schedule is SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult this coming season than last, even considering that typically it's hard to gauge the true SOS until the middle of the season.

They also signed Crowell and Ryan Grant. /J.J Nelson and have 3 of the top 25 picks in this years draft.

They are sending themselves up for Vegas.

OB hasn't figured out how to coach what his team does best, much less take away what another team does well. TY owns RAC too, for that matter. I do believe that I could scheme a defense that would shut down Hilton. I might give up 70 points to Johnny Football, but TY wouldn't beat me.

Against the Texans - "Those numbers add up to 32 catches for 734 yards and six touchdowns. On a per game average, Hilton is averaging 5.3 receptions, 122.3 yards and one touchdown against the Texans on the road."

I just saw the Cowboys preseason schedule, and will be playing the Texans in week 3. I will probably make that trip since that should be the dress rehearsal and I will be able to recognize the players on both teams.

He’s had a lot of responsibility, especially last year,” said O’Brien. “He ran a lot of the unit meetings, the offensive unit meetings. He will have more responsibility but it’s not like we’re dumping it all in his lap because he’s already done a lot. He’s earned the right to be where he’s at.”

Kelly spent two seasons with O’Brien at Penn State before riding the wave when O’Brien was named Texans coach in 2014. Kelly was an offensive quality control coach until 2017 when he was named the team’s new tight ends coach as incumbent John Perry was moved to receivers.

The Texans have announced their preseason schedule. Houston will have joint practices with the Packers before their first preseason game. Week 1 at Green Bay Packers Week 2 vs. Detroit Lions Week 3 at Dallas Cowboys Week 4 vs. LA Rams

The Lions have signed Tom Savage to compete with Connor Cook for backup to Stafford. This may especially be important for him in that Stafford's wife will soon be undergoing brain surgery. An MRI revealed a tumor consistent with an acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor (and/or its surgical removal) that can still result in significant damage to hearing, balance and surrounding brain tissues and cranial nerves that control facial movement. Prayers for Stafford and his wife.

Stafford may need to take some time off depending on how the surgery goes........there can be many potential complications associated with this condition and its surgery.

We not uncommonly put follow ups of ex-Texans in this section.

I'm assuming snarky comment directed at certain posters who believe Rick Smith was terrible at his job (and the reason for the Texans failures) and said his (RS's) wife was an excuse for him to leave the org without being 'fired'.

Just a guess but I read the last line as - "Isn't that what "time off to be with my dying wife" means?"

This is not a new concept. When I was fencing in college in preparation for the Olympics, my fencing coach (French Fencing Master Stanley St. Pellicer [Maitre d'Armes]) had me fencing in a dark room with strobe lights going at various speeds. It's an amazing tool to better anticipate and to accurately sharpen reflexes and reaction times.
