I don't think I really understand the whole "F/A don't want to come here" line of thought. F/A go wherever the money is. If Houston had offered Trent Brown more than Oakland did he would have come here. If Houston had offered Bell a deal that blew the Jets away he would have come here. I'm not saying they should have done this, indeed they absolutely should not have, but for most F/A where they play is secondary to how much they are getting paid to play there.
About the only team you can say players might go to for lesser money is the Pats but that's mostly just so they can have a good shot at getting a ring then they can go else where to get paid like Brown did. Of course there are other factors, player might take less money if more of it is guaranteed, but ultimately is still comes down to where they feel they will make the most cash. Some players are worth it and some aren't, its up to the FO of each team to figure out if a player is worth the high price that pretty much any player with a name in F/A costs.
The Texans business practice of not negotiating with players during the season must come to an end.
Basically, it lines up with what I said before. Our "biggest splash" got a 1 year contract. It's not exactly what I'm hoping for when we're #3 in cap space. At least KJax was rated #36.
The worst part? - We took exactly zero FA OG/OT in the top 101. I'm all for building through the draft, but I'd like to keep our QB upright in the meantime
We're saying the same thing.
I'm adding imo we'll never be the team FAs want to play for (outside of outbidding everyone else) if we pay mediocre players top contracts.
These one year deals are more conducive to getting us there because we are actually getting talented players much closer to their real value, if they work out like HB.
I hear you. Understand your pain.
But I don't care where they rank Kareem Jackson, you will be disappointed paying him $11M/yr knowing you have no choice but to do it again a second year.
Same thing with Trent Brown. My opinion of course. We're going to find out he is yet another FA that plays better in NE... & we're not going to be NE in the 2nd or third year of his contract.
Is he better than Davenport? Probably. Do I want him as my LT for the next three years? No. I don't.
The money has to make sense. Long term for the health of the team, it's got to make sense. We have to protect Watson better, that is also true.
Watson has a reputation for holding the ball too long. I'd rather teach him to learn to throw it away than be locked in to a bad deal for multiple years. I'd rather get RBs & TEs involved in the passing game than be locked in to a bad deal.
I would love to see us draft Andy Isabella. He can play inside or out. So when Fuller or Keke goes down we don’t loose a step.Remember how the offense looked after Fuller went down last yr.
You will see a very similar thing if Miller goes down.
These are definitely needs, not as much as OL/CB but definitely needs.

Issabella looks llike a speedier, slightly larger version of Wes Welker.Yep, my favorite 3rd rd WR's in this draft are McLaurin/Isabella.
Anyone know if the Texans are interested in any of the AAF players? Other teams seem to be signing some of the players but haven't heard anything about Texans. Was hoping they might be looking at some of the OT's.

I would think (hope) that the scouting department knows most all of the AAF players. At least they should.
Carolina picked up 4 including 3 OL.
Most of the time I don't think it's an issue & works in the Texans' favor. Take a guy like Clowney who has availability issues. Before the season a low ball "bird in the hand" deal looks enticing if you're worried about an injury in the upcoming season will affect your value the next offseason when you will be a FA.
Clowney bet on himself & so far seems to be working in his favor. But had he got hurt again he'd be thinking about the guaranteed money he could have had.
These one year deals screws up that dynamic.
Clowney isn't an ufa. The team still has control of him. Different situations.

Circling back on an interesting story from last week: A bunch of teams wanted former #Patriots character coach Jack Easterby once his contract expired. The #Texans lured him with a 4-year contract, source said, and Executive VP of Team Development title at age 35. A unique piece.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a "Character Coach"?

It's something the Patriots invented.Forgive my ignorance, but what's a "Character Coach"?

I could have used a character coach when I was younger. But I think it's a little late for that now.
We would have told him to fk off
Have had presentations by those type folks a couple times. Makes my smartass knob turn to 12.
Everything I watched, and everything I've read, the olinemen as a group were considered the worst position in the League.Carolina picked up 4 including 3 OL.
No -- it isn'tI could have used a character coach when I was younger. But I think it's a little late for that now.

Nothing new. That's always been a Texans criteria.I just hope it isn't something where they think they can figure out which draft picks are gonna be good based on "character."
Not FA news but all the Texans stuff from today regarding press conferences(all from Aaron Wilson):
Deshaun Watson on his world travels recently: 'It's something I always wanted to do. I always dreamed about it. I love historical stuff.'

J.J. Watt: 'I'm fortunate. I've had a very fortunate life. I don't want to leave the game anytime soon.' Hopeful that two years he was sidelined will add two years to his career.
Matt Kalil on new opportunity with Texans after being released by Carolina: 'I didn't hesitate. They've had a lot of great players who've had setbacks.'
Matt Kalil: 'I like being on a one-year deal. Everybody knows what kind of player I can be. It's about being healthy.' Says he feels healthy and strong. 'That's been the X-factor: health'
Matt Kalil: 'This is the most fired up I've been in a while.'

Tashaun Gipson said Jaguars corner A.J. Bouye, the former Texans starter, is one of his closest friends. Said he and Texans corner and former Jaguars teammate Aaron Colvin gave him lots of advice about joining the Texans. Said it was very helpful in making his decision.
Tashaun Gipson said he's aware the question mark of the defense is the secondary with the talent the Texans' defense has across defensive line and at linebacker. 'I'm excited to be here. I'm going to go to work.'
Wonder what Colvin and Bouye told Gipson...obviously wasn’t too bad if he still decided to come here. More evidence that what’s being said amongst players and the locker room about BoB & the Texans in general not quite matching up with what some posters on this board think is being said/thought.

They aren't signing any good offensive players
I can't imagine a defensive player having a bad thing to say about the Texans.
Now if only BO'b can take the same hands off approach to the offense.
Good offensive players don’t hit the market or aren’t made available as often as good defensive players. The ones who do are often malcontents/head cases (Antonio Brown, Leveon Bell), have run afoul of the law (Kareem Hunt, Mike Vick) or arent really good anymore & past their primes (Andre Johnson, Dez Bryant........Demaryius Thomas). In which case, you don’t really want any of those guys.
But as much as I rail on Lamar Miller, he was a solid signing at the time and a definite upgrade over Blue. I would’ve also liked for them to go after Mark Ingram this year, but the Texans not snagging any good offensive players speaks more to what’s out there & available than any slanted & flawed view you’re insinuating.
Lamar Miller would be good in a system that didn't run him up the middle and is able to get him in space
OL is the biggest need and the only dudes who wanted to come here havent been healthy in years and sucked last time they were healthy.
I agree with you about Miller but I still don't understand this whole "want to come here" mantra. F/A either want to go to the Pats to get a ring or they want to go to the team throwing the stupidest money at them. This year it was Trent Brown and Bell, a couple of years ago it was Oz and, to a lesser degree, Miller. We could have Bell, badger and both Browns on the team right now but you yourself pointed out how that would put us in cap hell for the next 10 years.
Actually I agree with you but it started with someone saying all these defensive signings prove the players want to play for O'Brien. I don't think it shows that.
Bwhahaha so now we're keeping track of all the good offensive players that hit the market verses all the good defensive players who hit the market.
Some fans and the length they would go for ole Bill O'Brien. Bwhahaha

Just about every critical comment about how the Texans coaching staff/FO handle players & things on the field has come from a defensive player.
Coach Reed unloading on Wade Phillips' defensive scheme.......
Swearinger unloading on BoB & the db's coach..........
hell even this year with honey badger low key getting at the FO about their antiquated practice of not negotiating contracts during the season.
