Should the Texans Rethink their "no in-season player negotiation" policy?

We've lost too many players waiting to negotiate only during the offseasons.................players that could be had for much lesser $s and longer term than when they are up against a wall with too much competition and unreasonable monies thrown around once they hit FA.

Is it time to finally rethink a policy that has been thus far set in stone............seemingly simultaneously setting the Texans feet in stone during the negotiating process?

I had no idea they even had this policy. Good lord, that is stupid and puts you at a disadvantage.

Of course they should. They’ve been a largely disappointing franchise. They should rethink everything from their roster moves to their bathroom breaks for employees.

They don’t do a whole hell of a lot right.

Weird how different the OB and the Kubiak eras are from each other, but also so many organizational similarities we're seeing with the franchise as a whole now. Depressing to say the least.

I think Rick is still in charge. If you remove all the variables in an experiment, you can identify which source is affecting outcome. BOB is the only constant but it's clearly not him so it has to be Smith.

Where did I say that.

Did he have constraints, yes, does Gaine have constraints, yes. Those constraints are usually either not wanting to add the Tyreke Hill/Kareem Hunt's of the world, or financial constraints like making your FA plan a plan of going after 2nd tier FA's. Very rarely does ownership put both of these constraints on their GM like the McNair's do.

With that said, the former GM's draft record speaks for itself and there's no way to defend it. To overcome the constraints the GM has to nail the draft and the former GM certainly failed in that regard.

Smith did not come out with this on his own. The part of the job, Smith was excellent at was being the mouthpiece and front man for the organization.

McDuck aside, I'd seriously wager a guess then it is Chris Olsen, Senior Vice President of Football Operations stance in regards to player contract policy. 13 years prior to Texan gig 1999-2006 he was Manager of Labor Operations with the NFL Management Council. Along with conservative ownership this is probably why Texans operate antiquated, outdated model. Only way this changes is if Ownership changes, either by selling franchise or changing way they operate business. I'm not to hopeful of either happening anytime soon

Is having your agent talk about a contract and fill a player in here and there truly distracting to the player? Not convinced of that.

My view of Smith is that he follows direction well (went and got OZ) and even will follow through creatively (Cleveland trade was NBA style unique to the NFL), but that he was not an innovator or creator. The one person (I know) who knows the NFL circles believes that Smith was largely thought of just another GM (decent, good enough guy type as I remember). That info influences my perception overall.

Who? How is this known? Quite a few teams don't negotiate during the season.

The season ended January 5th. Free agency started March 11th/13th. How is that not enough time?

So long as ppl fill the stadium content watching mediocre football,why change?The dough keeps rolling in and those players that want to get paid, get it somewhere else. Why any player would re-up with this franchise is a mystery to me. Well some just want the $$$, but those that want that Ring should be leaving.

If I wanted to win you can best believe joining the Texans org would be on the bottom of my list of teams I would want to join. Look at the wasted careers of AJ/Foster/Watt/DB etc... You probably are going to be able to add Watson because of injury if they dont invest in protecting him and Hopkins for the same reason (Not protecting Watson) to this list.
