Alliance of American Football (AAF)

I was sort of watching the Arizona/Memphis game tonight while doing other stuff on my PC, but I'm pretty sure I saw a lot more tackles behind the line of scrimmage than I normally do in an NFL game. And from both sides I might add.

Arizona seems a well put together team. San Antonio is in their division and will have their hands full with them.

you know I have seen a couple of female officials, now that you mention it.
Maybe they're getting OJT for the NFL...?

I've seen only one game from start to finish, that was the first weeks San Antonio game. But I've seen pieces of about four games so far, and I've seen female officials on the field in two of them, and one of them had a female for the "9th" official in the booth. They say they also have female coaches, but I haven't noticed them. Female coaches will probably be harder to pick out on the sidelines than the officials on the field. You have to wonder, because someone is going to do it, when a female will be on the field as a player. Will it be the AAF or the XFL that tries it first?

You know somebody will try that, just for the ratings if nothing else.

Probably so. There are three professional 11 on 11 full contact female leagues.

Do you know where there is any video on these? I like to see that.

Steve Spurrier sure has that offense going in Orlando, they made a good comeback against San Antonio. This league is fairly entertaining, but other than the two San Antonio games, I haven't watched any other games in full yet, but I think Arizona and Orlando seem to be the top of the pack so far.

Hard to watch when I don't know jack about the teams or the players. Saw some of it on last night, but don't know of anyone out there. They need to promote who is who a little bit better. I had no idea this league was even about to broadcast so soon.

You will learn more about the players in time.

I would like Stockton from Tx Tech to be a guy the Texans bring into camp. He's got speed and good hands and runs hard. Much better than Blue.

Report: Hurricanes owner gave AAF $250 million after league was 'running short on cash'
Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon will be announced as the Alliance of American Football's new chairman Tuesday after making a nine-figure investment into the league, The Athletic reported late Monday night. The AAF, which is now two weeks into its inaugural season, was "running short on cash" before Dundon stepped forward with a $250-million investment, Dundon, 47, became the majority owner of the Hurricanes in January 2018.....

Cash strapped already? And some folks think the market can support TWO minor spring leagues. The AAF and the XFL will not both survive, there isn't enough demand for it, and certainly not enough money to go around to support two minor leagues.

I like the AAF, but I suppose that could be it's the first out of the gate and still has a shiny new-car smell to them. If you were to bet me a nickel both leagues will survive, you'd lose that nickel.

The NFL should invest in the AAFL and use it as a minor league and QB developmental league. It would be a wise investment. That's why the NFL will never invest in it.

I like the idea, but the NFL is probably still dubious about minor leagues after the European Football League they promoted so much failed. I always thought the European league was a bad idea, and their money instead should have been in a North American league.

Just like playing games in London, the NFL is all about expanding their brand overseas. T%heir ultimate goal is to put a franchise over there. The EFL was a trial balloon and predictably failed. Just know the NFL owners could care less about what's good for the game.

They are interested in $$$$ only and what can make them the most. See

1. Fighting the concussionlawsuits and changing the rules of the game.
2. Kaep
3. Moving games overseas
4. Failing to invest in the sport by forming a minor league here in the US where it will work.
5. Keeping God'ell employed even though he's obviously rigged investigations to conclude the outcome he desires.
6. Allowing outcomes of games to be decided by officials missed calls.

I could go on and on but I will stop here.

You think Kaep was good for the game?

Nope, I think he was bad for the owners bottom line so they paid him off to go away. This lawsuit was never about social justice for Kaep it was about $$$$ and the owners found an acceptable price to pay Kaep off and make all of this go away. 30 mil is what's been reported or less that 1/10 of $$$$ made off of the gate/concessions/parking of 1 game. Yet, the owners will use this as a reason to jack season ticket prices up 10/20% again. Why? Because they can.

How often do you raise the prices you charge and why?

Not as often as I would like.

Unfortunately in my business pricing has gone the other way because unscrupulous business practices by other owners. Gotta do more work to make the same $$$$. These guys are starving and reset the market. (I'm talking about doing commercial accts.)

A business is interested in making money.

Imagine that..

You obviously dont get the point of my post.

I have no problems with owners making $$$$ but the % should be based on the type of product that's put on the field. I just want owners to put what's best for the game above profits. Like Wellington Mara/Art Rooney etc... did. Their descendants have failed in this regard.

So it should subjectively be what steelb prefers? Ok, got it.

Ratings went up last year as profits soared. But I'm sure you'll find fault there as well.

Spring wanna-be pro football: "Don't care, don't care, don't care...."

Seriously. I barely give a **** about NFL and College football at this point and I've been watching it long enough to finally understand that every few years people talk about other leagues and every decade (sometimes every two decades) some dumb bunch of millionaires get together and decide to collectively burn a bunch of their money on something nobody really wants all that much.

Here we are again.

The size of the pile of money being thrown away varies from league to league. The cities involved rarely change much. The crowds are always small and the end result is always the same.

Merge the two leagues and do what I stated from the get-go...quit trying to compete with the NFL and put the focus on becoming a legitimate minor league for professional football.

I'd open the league to any HS football athlete who would like to focus on football full time but he would have to have 3 years minimum in the MLoPF or be the age of 21 to become eligible for the NFL Draft.

Most important, quit these dang summer leagues....play the games on the odd days during the NFL and CFB seasons. Football fans can't get enough football in season, so go where the crowds will be.

The games are on CBS/CBSSN/NFLN and are played on Saturday's/Sunday's.

I like the spring league and some of the innovations they've made. Like the Sky Judge and having to go for 2 after TD's. I miss the kickoffs though.

That's the worst option possible. Why in the world would you have them compete with college & the NFL? Put them in the spring qhen football fans are dying of thirst.

I dont know how that quoted me. That was part of OT's post.

I'm in total agreement with you. I think or maybe hope the AFFL makes it. If the TV rating are any indication I think it will.

I don't think they've ever intended to compete with the NFL. They're not drawing top talent like the AFL and USFL did. Their rosters are made up mostly of 54-90 guys, basically a league of 4th pre-season game NFL. I do believe their ultimate goal is to become a developmental league and get the NFL behind it. If that doesn't happen though, I don't see it lasting very long considering they already need a cash infusion. Probably a bad idea to play these games in 65,000 seat stadiums. Should have rented MLS stadiums, something much smaller. And then they go head-to-head with the XFL next year. I don't see either league lasting very long unless the NFL gets behind one.

And no way should they be playing it in the fall. You've already got the NFL playing Monday, Thursday and Sunday, college is playing Tuesday - Saturday, there's High School football, there's no room for them. That's too much freaking football. Nah, spring is where it needs to be, and they probably should have waited 'til at least March to start instead of a week after the Super Bowl. Nobody's even had a chance to miss football yet.

Lop the nfl is the one who started the league in the first place. They are television games. They made the league to test expansion..and maybe if lucky, find a guy or two..they have nfl coaches. This isn' some rogue or separate thing.
...and the uniforms and team names suck..

Yeah I can't say I'm too thrilled with team names/uniforms. One of the reasons I can't really get into the Texas team they have a weak uni and name, I'm more into the Apollos they have a pretty sweet look/name. Hopefully the XFL will do better.

I think the San Antonio helmets are pretty cool looking, the rest of the uniform not so much. Over all I like the Salt Lake uniforms the best. I'll watch the AAF while it's on, I'll also be waiting to see what the Houston XFL team looks like. If the XFL ever hits the ground. I have Zero hope that either of these leagues last, but the novelty of them while the NFL sleeps is something I'll probably always be a sucker for. LOL

It seem to me that he NFL is giving support to the AAL.

Televising games and coverage of the games on their network seems to bear this out.

The games are entertaining.

If the XFL starts out attempting to compete against the NFL their chance of survival is bleak.

They would require a long term commitment from one of the major networks to even have a slim chance.

Has anyone watched any of the Orlando games? Does it bother any of you to see Steve Spurrier hobble up and down the sidelines like that? If any of the players run out of bounds and hit him I'm afraid he'll break in half. If I was over 70 and had a bad back like that, I wouldn't be within miles of young football players running about in full gear.

yeah, I cringed watching him.

but then I figure the NFLN is compensating him well or he wouldn't be out there, sooo...

Finally got to see a AAF team finally try their new fangled onsides try rule, and they pulled it out. Only to throw an interception on their next play. LOL

Anybody still watching this? I've seen all the San Antonio games so far, and bits an pieces of a lot of other games. Orlando is definitely the class of the league. I think San Antonio is one of the upper half teams. Birmingham definitely has a kick ass defense, but a pathetic offense.

Eastern Conference
Orlando Apollos 4–0
Birmingham Iron 3–1
Memphis Express 1–3
Atlanta Legends 1–3
Western Conference
San Antonio Commanders 2–2
San Diego Fleet 2–2
Arizona Hotshots 2–2
Salt Lake Stallions 1–3
