A different take: What Bob could do to earn his HC position

TripleTap

Dead Wood
I'm thinking this could be a positive only thread, just what Bob could do to make the team a winner and make his position as HC a valuable one. I've got just a couple ideas:

1. Give up the OC position. He can't possibly think he's a great OC. So step aside and bring in someone with wit and imagination to take over that role and develop not only Watson but the rest of this tepid offense.

2. Forget his pals and hire an OL coach with some ideas and some proven results.

3. Get 3 new quality OL folk. No matter what the cost.

4. Romeo? Frankly I just don't know. Somebody else will have to handle this. Seems to me with the talent we have at and around the D-line we ought to be much tougher.

5. DB. Get three of those, too.

The simple fact is Bob's had plenty of time to turn the Texans into a winner. If his ego keeps getting in the way we're going to have the same "nearly there" team forever. Same as it ever was.

How about when a tough team comes to town his scrotum and brain does not shrink?

This man has not found a way to put up a fight against good team in the last 5 years not named the Bengals.

90 thousand screaming Texans fans............. this man finds a way to lame it out!!!!!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All legitimacy to Texans football went to the garbage dump when he was not fired immediately after the wildcard game. Gaine missed a serious opportunity. Opportunity he will regret big time.

He lost the city and the locker room already. Nobody in their right mind thinks this guy has what it take.

IF I had the chance to give my advice to OB would be.

Learn your instincts and trust in them.

NOT that he follows those instincts... God no.

But that he learns to trust that his instincts suck and do the opposite.

IF he were to do that there might come a day that we sing his praises.

Oh and a positive about obrien... he doesnt eat chocolate cake on the side lines...... that is not a chin you want to eat chocolate around.

I think, honestly, if he would do more of the things that work, & less of the things that don't he'd go a long way towards being a really good head coach.

But for whatever reason, if something seems to work he puts it on the back shelf. Oh, we got TEs we can use to create mismatches? Eh... don't need that.

Oh, we can run around the edges if we stretch the line? Let's stop doing that.

Hey!!! Martinas looks better with no practice at LG than Kelemente... we'll make him our LT.

Build on the offense we saw in Buffalo, at the end of the Jags game, against Dallas.

Keke Coutee... looks really good. DeAndre Carter was a decent substitute. So if I have both in the same game, you'd think the creative juices would be flowing. But, nope. Three completely independent routes that plays right into the Tampa Two.

Think about it. If he would just put together all the things we saw that worked, that we know this team can do, just imagine.

It doesn't matter what we say here. It isn't going to change a thing. Nobody from the coaching staff or FO is an incognito member of this forum.

I'd politely ask him to get the TE's involved in his offense.
Yes, there are TE's on the roster, I checked.
Yep...always wondered why that very same thing. If we’re not going to utilize the strength they represent, or CAN represent, then why not go the old “run and shoot” offense the Oilers ran?

Mods just go ahead and combine this thread with the fire thread now, they are going to look alike within 5 pages or so. Besides I'm curious if that thread can stay alive till he is actually gone whether by firing, leaving or retiring. Yes I'll admit I'm easily amused.

"We just need a coach that yells at people!" That's what I heard for the last 20 years. Me: "How about someone who can outsmart people?!" He would be fine if he took a pay cut and brought in someone creative who can scheme mismatches, misdirection and hell a screen pass to RB every now and then never hurts. Of course then that person would eventually leave for a HC job

There are multiple aspects involved with being a head coach. BO'B does well in a few and poorly in others. Most HCs are that way. Hell, Kubiak exhibited a lot of the same shortcomings in his Super Bowl year with Denver that he exhibited here in Houston.

This team started 0-3 and they never gave up. That's a good sign the team is buying in to what the HC is selling. Someone upthread said his team has not put up a good fight against a good team at all; I disagree. The playoff game against the Pats was a damn good showing - better than that against this year's Colts. But that team had Osweiler at QB, so it just wan't going to happen. O'Brien has done really well making crappy QB play work. He's also chosen those crappy QBs. So like I said, good in some areas, bad in others.

I think if he was involved in the offense during the week and not on Sundays, this team would be better.

There were screen passes, remember the screen in the Washington game that Watson threw the int that lead to an easy TD?

The super cool triple fake screen that would require our already bad offensive line to hold their blocks longer than a normal screen because of all the misdirection and fakes? lol yes I remember

Side note, I have seen that play ran by numerous teams this season with all the same misdirection and fakes, I think it only worked one time out of like the 10 or so times I saw it ran. To me it's just way to much going on, and takes way to long to develop. You might get lucky against a bad, undisciplined defense with it but any defense worth their pay should easily be able to blow that up

Honestly, there really isn't anything interesting being discussed. The Texans shown that they are happy with O'Brien with a new contract which has been justified with an 11-5 division title season. Plenty of fans have made up their mind that O'Brien sucks and always will. Any poster says anything between BOB had great year or he totally sucks is ignored or labeled with as one or the other extremes.

Yeah this board is turning into HTMB, but with good mods that don't ban you for a differing opinion. What happened to attack the post, not the poster?

If obrien worked on:

-developing an offensive system that is more modern
-was smarter in playcalling (aka no back to back wr screens or triple fake screens at the wrong time with wrong personnel)
- learned the intricacies of tiemouts, challenge flags, and when to go for it on 4th down
-had his teams better prepared at beginning of the seasons and playoffs
-anticipated adjustments from other teams and had counters
-was better at player evaluation and didn't do things like start the linemen in wrong places or used his RB as a power back instead or a zone back
-didnt fall in love with players in the draft that turn out to be busts, aka jaelen strong, xsf or two TEs who can't block so can barely play and instead trusted his scouts and any data they may have (if they have any such analytics department)

Then I could consider him maybe being worthy of a spot, but he needs more seasoning. Ideally he gets more experience as a QB coach then an OC job to see if he really learned to build an offense.

If he shows he's one of the best OCs in the league then he'd be worth a look.

We now live in a world of absolutes, to the vocal minority you are either an OB lover or an OB hater no in between, just like you either have to be a conservative or a liberal. Of course this way of thinking is wrong, but to the vocal minority that now gets to loudly voice their opinions all over the internet they can't serperate logic and reason from emotions so if you disagree with them on 1 thing than you have to be apart of the other side, the "enemies" if you will

Not only that but now people can just live in a bubble and don't have to consider any view point except their own and those that agree with them. Don't like what someone has to say, just block them and you never have to read anything they write again. We even see it on here, someone disagrees with you, just put them on ignore.

LOL,

BOB already has 1 more playoff win than Marvin did in 1/3 of the time.
5 years and one playoff win is nothing to brag about. Especially when 2 of his wins are against the guy we’re making fun of and the other was against a horrible rookie QB thrown into action because of an injury.

So we're qualifying things?

11 wins, not good enough
Playoff win not good enough
SB win probably not good enough for some.

I forgot to add there was an incompetent GM who greatly contributed to your post.

To be fair up until this year, his sixth year, Andy Reid only had 1 playoff win with KC.

I will grant you that your point still stands but just putting this out there since people have lately talked about how much better a coach Reid is. Of course that one playoff win was against us so.....yeah.

Think about it this way 16 yrs and the Texans have only beaten a Marvin Lewis coached team and a Connor Cook QB'ed team in the playoffs.
