Colts fire offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo in surprise move

The Indianapolis Colts’ first move of the offseason is a stunner: offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo is out.

DeGuglielmo’s exit, confirmed by a team source, comes just after one season in Indy. Originally one of three assistants hired by Josh McDaniels before the Patriots’ offensive coordinator elected to back out of his contract and stay in New England, DeGuglielmo stayed on under coach Frank Reich and oversaw the rapid overhaul of a unit that had for years been among the worst in football.

Not anymore. Before DeGuglielmo’s arrival, the Colts allowed an NFL-worst 56 sacks in 2017. This season, buoyed by the arrival of sixth overall pick and Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson, the career year of center Ryan Kelly and the surprise seasons of right guard Mark Glowinski and right tackle Braden Smith, the Colts allowed just 18 sacks, two better than any team in football.

Is this guy better than our Oline coach ? I dunno maybe he's just got better guards and tackles ?

As pointed out in another thread, he was fired in NE after a couple years. I don't think he is necessarily good, but maybe better than Devlin.

Talent matters

Yes, anyone is probably better than Devlin. This guy got results from a young unit and that's saying something. The Texans seem to have a solid GM in Gaine and I'm holding out all hope that the OL is finally a primary concern for the Texans. If so, I like the idea of adding a few bodies to the OL from this draft and having a OL Coach who appears capable of coaching up young OL. Dave got the Colts OL near the the top in the NFL while Devlin continues his efforts in making sure the Texans have one of the worst units in the NFL.

I don't think Dave G. had much of anything to do with the Colt's OL being as solid as they were

Then, according to you, the possibility exists that Devlin could be a Gibbs type of OL Coach provided he had better talent at his disposal b/c that would be the only reason DG did a bang-up job with the Colts OL. Don't forget, the Texans should be adding some prime college talent to the OL this season and possibly a decent veteran OT.

Wow, don't know how you came to that conclusion, but no

I was hoping the Texans would have gone after Harry Hiestand before Chicago got him.

He already had ties to Chicago so he probably wouldn't have left ND to come here.
