Texans Select 3.68 Justin Reid S Stanford

powda

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
World's largest Taco Bell. They have a tree as a mascot. Oski pees on trees.

But yeah, can't hurt.

Sorry, Cal Bears. Reflex.
If Stanford is taco bell, I'll pet more Chihuahuas and eat more tacos.

I think Reid could have very good career. He is insurance if Mathieu leaves and if he doesn't, we could have awesome backfield. Last contract years for Drummond and Moore should lead to step up from them. Decoud's move to safety increases my interest and positive feelings. Hal's 67 tackles, 2 for loss, 1 QB hit, 5 passes defended with 3 INTs and 2 forced fumbles last season emphatically states he is still in the mix and in only his second year of a very reasonable cost with a cap hit of just over 1/2 of Mathieu's $7 million. There has been some good work IMO on contracts again this year. Thanks Chris Olsen!

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't they play opposite safety positions?
Each can play both IMO. Badger prior to 2016 "He's played 68 percent of his snaps as a slot corner, 24 percent at strong safety and eight percent as a free safety, according to Pro Football Focus".

Reid at 6'1" 207 is perfect for either spot. It will be interesting to see how DBs are used. I think KJ will not be brought back after 2018 and depending on how K Johnson does, I could see KJ traded during season.

Stanford safety Justin Reid 2017 snap count: • 396 - Nickel CB • 218 - Free Safety • 112 - Box/Strong Safety Very smart and versatile player.

I think of Cliff Harris & Charlie Waters. Charlie said half of his INTs were because folks were scared of Cliff. Captain Crash was 190 lbs of mean. (No small wonder Landry saw Cliff as a player, they were twins ). Not the same role. Damn Cliff would hit.

Good comparison I had not thought of..Badger and Reid love to hit. Reid has rep of getting to target early sometimes but that should be correctable. We should have cap $ to get Mathieu to return if he wants..hope he is loyal. KJ is at $9 million this year. I don't see how he can earn that unless KJohnson can't recover rookie form and Joseph is not what I think he will be this season.

KJax will be great at safety. Many of us will say.... "why did we not do this 4 years ago". KJ plays so much better going down hill and he is more reactive after the first initial WR cut or move.
K Jax’s versatility will keep him on the team this season. He’s a jack of all trades, master of none. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. Every team needs glue guys that can plug the leaks when trouble arises.

My favorite game of his as a Texan was last season’s Bengals game. He finished with 8 tackles, 1 sack and 1 FF. But his most important contribution came when he was the last CB standing in a tightly contested game after K Jo and Jo Jo left with injury. He was asked to keep AJ Green from winning the game. He was overmatched but it didn’t matter that night. He got the job done against one of the best WRs in the game when there was nobody left to cover!

Justin Reid, Houston Texans

Nabbing the flex defensive spot on the PFF All-Rookie team, Reid showcased his versatility in coverage by intercepting three passes and breaking up an additional five balls but was arguably the league’s surest rookie tackler at safety. On 76 total tackle attempts, Reid missed just five tackles – finishing as just the only safety to spend at least 400 snaps on defense and miss fewer than eight attempts.

Two things I am liking in addition to the above - he can only get better, and he seems durable.
Great pick for a 3rd rounder.

Texans' cerebral second-year safety Justin Reid taking leadership role
HOUSTON -- WhenHouston Texansgeneral manager Brian Gaine talked about the signing of free-agent safetyTashaun Gipson, he mentioned another important player in the secondary:

“We also think his skill set complementsJustin Reidvery well,” Gaine said.
Reid, a third-round pick in 2018, played so well as a rookie that not only do the Texans think he can take a big jump forward and be a leader in the secondary in his second season, but in some ways, they are building the unit around him.

The Texans’ secondary will have a lot of new faces this season after Houston lost defensive backsTyrann MathieuandKareem Jacksonin free agency and safetyAndre Halretired in April. Houston signed Gipson, but hopes its replacement for Mathieu's production was already on the roster.

Reid played in all 16 regular-season games during his rookie season, finishing with 88 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Perhaps his most exciting moment as rookie came in the Texans’ Week 11 victory in Washington. On third-and-goal in the second quarter, Reid interceptedAlex Smith's pass in the end zone and returned it 101 yards for a touchdown.

Reid did all of that while also playing a key role on special teams by running the Texans' punt protection, playing the part of what head coach Bill O’Brien referred to as “the quarterback of the punt team.”

“Most rookies don't play a lot, [but] Justin got a lot of playing time and played at a good level,” O’Brien said. “He really has good command of what we're doing defensively and he has good command of what we're doing on special teams.”http://www.espn.com/blog/houston-texans/post/_/id/23752/texans-cerebral-second-year-safety-justin-reid-taking-leadership-role

Really think the sky is the limit for Reid. Texans may have found their first bonafide elite safety in franchise history if he continues his upward trajectory. I could see him and Derwin James being thought of as best safeties in league by the time they are up for their second contracts. Both came from same draft as well!
