Texans random thought of the day

This was the best complete game by this team all season. No we didn't throw up 40 and blow out the Jags, yes Waton's numbers aren't eye popping, and don't really look good on the surface. But with all things considered this was a very well called game offensively and defensively. Jumped out to an early lead, which let us run the ball and attack the Jags weakness on defense while, not exposing our injured QB to hits. Watson protected the football better, but more importantly protected himself better. He threw the ball away a couple times which is the first time I remember him doing that this season, he slid and got out of bounds when he ran the ball to avoid the hits. This is the type of game we needed, with our QB being injured and going into a short week. I am very pleasantly surprised with how Sunday went.

Along with the win over Dallas I'd say this was one of the two best games of the year for the Texans, and wow what a wonderful surprise because I gave them no chance
for a "W" heading into Sunday at Jacksonville yesterday.

Week 7 in the NFL: By Any Means Necessary
Deshaun Watson rode the bus to Jacksonville, but everyone’s on board for the surging Texans. Plus, what was behind Cam Newton’s comeback effort in Philly, how the Chiefs are working to avoid a letdown, why the Chargers are flying high and more off a wild NFL Sunday
The conversation Texans coach Bill O’Brien, GM Brian Gaine and head athletic trainer Geoff Kaplan had with their quarterback, Deshaun Watson early last week was remarkably short, given what all of us on the outside would perceive as the gravity of the situation.

At that point, the team was still mulling options for Watson to travel to Jacksonville, with the 23-year-old’s rib and lung injuries taking flying off the table. And as part of planning, with 12 hours of ground travel necessary, they had to ask Watson himself a pretty straightforward question:What do you want to do?

“I want to play in the game,” Watson responded.

Simple question. Simple answer.

“He could play, he was cleared to play, obviously he wanted to play, he practiced all week,” O’Brien explained just before midnight local time back in Houston late Sunday night. “And so Brian and those guys got a bus for him, and three or four support staff people went with him. And that’s about it.”
If O’Brien seems matter-of-fact, it’s no mistake. It’s more an acknowledgement that what Watson did on Saturday to play on Sunday in the Texans’ 20-7 win over the Jaguars is closer to the norm now in Houston than to any kind of exception.

Wait, I thought you said they had a bad offseason, because they didn't participate in free agency and address the OL problems?

They had an avg offseason in FA and they needed to spend the $$$$ to have a great one.

They had a great draft considering the mess that Ricky left them.

What mess did Ricky left them that you’re referring to?

An OL, entire secondary,no TE's worth a crap, do you like the rb corps, slot wr etc..

Atleast he fixed the safety position and slot wr position. Also tried to fix the TE position and finally the ST's were properly addressed for the first time in franchise history. So yes Gaine had a mess to clean up and he didn't have first or second round draft picks to do it with.

Quick thoughts on the #Texans vs. Jax. 1) Jordan Akins is a better player since week one. He is a good blocker on the move. He is filling a vacant H-Back role that the offense has never really had. I think he is going to be more involved with the O as the moves on. #Texans
2) #Texans used Keke Coutee, Jordan Thomas and Akins with motions to set the tone in the run game. Their long and short motions and play fakes had the Jags ILBs flat footed. They were lost which created so much space in the run game.
3) Notice the #Texans run game was not as effective in the 2nd half? It was because Coutee was out. His jet motion looks really kept the Jags defense honest and not playing fast.
4) Justin Reid is becoming one of the best year one players the #Texans have had in a while. His instincts are off the chart and his ability to slide down and cover TEs or WRs in a pinch is big.

4 continued) Questions on Justin Reid and his tackling ability were big coming out of college. Biggest change he has made is playing under control and he is a plus tackler for the

5) This was the best game for the #Texans offensive line all season. Controlled the pass rush and moved the Jags front at will in the run game. Davenport is still working but was his best game of the season too.

6) Kendall Lamm since becoming the starter at RT has been a complete 180 from the season before. He has been tested with some top end pass rushers and held his own.

7) It is true Jadeveon Clowney is good at football. It is true J.J. Watt is also good at football. The two are creating so many issues off the edges

8) Lamar Miller was a difference maker on Sunday. Running with purpose and making defenders miss. One game is not going to cut it for him, has to produce consistently moving forward.

9) #Texans are way more balanced on offense after Deshaun Watson was hurt. Limiting his throws and running the football with a purpose now. Sacks + hits have gone down because of it

Texans remaining schedule and QB's

1) Dolphins / Osweiler
2) Broncos / Keenum
3) Redskins / Smith
4) Titans / Mariotta
5) Browns / Mayfield
6) Colts / Luck
7) Jets / Darnold
8) Eagles / Wentz
9) Jaguars / Bortles

I see Smith, Mayfield, Luck and Wentz as problems. The Broncos have good WR's. Has Mariotta ever had a good game against the Texans? As one astute board member mentioned somewhere else, "if the Texans lose to Osweiler, I'm kicking myself in the nuggets!" Darnold is a rookie (I know, I know) but the Texans should win that game. And Bortles is Bortles. Hell, he may not even be around by then.

My crystal ball sees 5-4 with what's left and the ol 9-7 season again. "back to back AFCS championships Brian" I really want to say this team should finish those 9 games 7-2 (losses to Wentz and Luck), but my glass is half empty with this team until proven otherwise. 9-7 again and a home playoff game against a WC team, Chargers, Steelers, Ravens, or Bengals would be my best guess.

Denver and Washington away games as well as Philly away will be very tough. NYJ in NY will be no cakewalk either. Dolphins are iffy. Titans rarely easy .

Texans could likely go 3-6 over last nine

The Texans are as likely to go 6-3 as 3-6. Every team on their schedule currently is the same sort of mid-level, average football team as the Texans, especially on a given week. there no guaranteed wins or losses left. The Texans are on the get in the playoffs and hope to get lucky plan, again...sorry

So 4-5 is probable? :D

I don't think so.. ratings are up, because so many teams are still in divisional races.

or is it the bounce back the artificial drop from the flag stuff last year...When I have talked to fans from other teams, no one seems to overall enjoy it regularly, just staying fans out habit

I normally hope for the best. Against that schedule, I'd convince myself we could go 9-0.

Then the 4 game losing streak kicks me in the gonads with steel toed pointy Cowboy boots.

So this year, I'm going to try & convince myself O'b is who I thought he was & we go 0-9.

Then maybe, instead of that boot to the nutts I'll get a happy ending.

The Cardinals becoming desperate have signed OG Oday Aboushi to their active roster

Yikes.....that's another team playing for draft position. These teams with problems seem to be pretty much in the same shape as the Texans, in regards to the OL. There's going to be a run on OL in 2019.....I just hope the Texans don't play themselves into a position where the scraps look great.

7-2 with the only acceptable losses to DEN & PHI (and even those teams are quite beatable) ... so that would make an 11-4 season .. umm something is wrong .. gad dangit there I go being a fan again with my battle red blinders on. Im sure that scenario is too good to be true, Im not accounting for the one or two Buttchin Losses, so I'll change that to 5-4 which puts us in the more realistic Bill OBrien zone of 9-7. Okay order is restored.

5-4

Broncos/Redskins/Eagles and 1 game on the road against an underdog.

9-7 which is really overachieving when it comes to their talent level and playing with a QB that cant even fly with the team because of injury.

# Realistic expectations during a rebuilding yr.

Well he only wasn't cleared to fly for 1 of our road games, they already said barring any setbacks he will fly with the team to Denver

Only 1 game? LOL the point is this rarely happens and even if he's able tp fly it doesn't mean those ribs/lung will be fully healed. In fact they most likely wont be fully healed which will hinder Watson's performance.

They dont know if he will be able to fly or not, it's just a guess at this point. Punctured lungs are hard to predict.

Von Miller against anyone on our line is scary.

Chad Kelly, backup QB, got released by the Broncos. Broncos are going to trash the rest of their season. It's over for them. Von is going to be taking his foot off the gas pedal. He has nothing to prove and won't risk injury. My thought.

I'm not sure the releasing of Chad Kelly would be reason enough for the Broncos to throw in the towel.

Rebuilding with a top 5 defense, top wideout, top 15 QB and finally a top 5 special teams unit? Someone needs to train the team on how to pick and choose their spots.

I define a rebuild as selling your current assets for new ones. We are NOT doing that. I don’t know how you call this season as a “rebuild”?

They finally have the GM in place to do a small rebuild of OL/CB/Depth all of which were lacking. In Gaine if his 1st draft is any indication is the man to do the job. Do you think the Texans are SB contenders? If you do then you need a reality check. The talent level is certainly lacking.

You dont believe in letting the new GM build the team that is his image?

If no, did you have the same standards with Ricky?

It all depends on your definition of "Superbowl Contender". IMO, a SB contender is any team that makes the playoffs. I think the Texans can make the playoffs, thus I believe they're a super bowl contender. I'm pretty sure you disagree with that definition, which is reasonable.

I think the talent level is fine. No, I don't think we're the most talented team in the league, but it's good enough to win the division and make playoffs. I believe what's holding us back the most is the coaching. BOB does not have the credibility to be both the HC and OC. The loses against the Giants & Titans this season were due to lack of preparedness and poor game plans, not lack of talent.

I don't think Chad Kelly was released to tank Denver's season... Kelly was released because he spends to much time in the tank... drunk tank... well and strangers houses

One of those rare cases where signing a head case (fighting high school kids while your in college) didn't pan out and make the team better :D

I think his release has as much to do with how he conducted himself at the teams annual party, and how the rest of the team viewed him as it did with his arrest. Apparently he tried getting into a fight with a guest, and had to have security escort him out. His teammates were not happy with him, and how he conducted himself at the party.

Question, do the Broncos have a back up QB now?

The talent level is fine if you like seeing bad DB/OL play.
