State of the O-line

Offensive line overall grades and pressures allowed for #Texans vs Jags Davenport: 54.1 (4) Kelemete: 49.1 (3) Martin: 54.9 (1) Mancz: 65.8 (3) Lamm: 56.3 (3) 14 total pressures, three QB hits and one sack. Not a terrbile showing against the Jags stout D
I see Mancz rated highest.
His rookie year had him graded around 9th in the league for centers - why he is only a backup just befuddles me.

Despite some What the hell plays by Davenport the line did enough to keep injured #4 productive. Mancz at OG doing so well surprised me. Kelemete was horrible and not what is needed next to D. would like to see Rankin gets time this week at LG

I really don't see how that's not terrible. Isn't that more than half of dropbacks under pressure?

Devil's advocat here, even if our offer was the exact same as the Giant's ours is considerably better money wise due to their state income tax. He would take home over $1.5 mil a year here compared to what he takes home there. He also very easily could have done to us what Osweiler did to Denver. Had us both bidding back and forth with each other, as soon as the team he wanted to go to hit the number he was targeting he cut off lines of communication with the other team. Elway stated this happened to him, so it's not out of the realm of possibilities to think that Solder who wanted to stay in the north east for personal reasons could have done the same thing. The Texans FO isn't as vocal about these things as Elway is so they wouldn't come out and say it. Solder was AWFUL last game though, let's see how he is tonight

So far, Solder looks like Davenport's understudy.

This has been one of my biggest peeves this season. I just want to hand out "DUNCE Hats" for sideline wear to both O'Brien and Devlin. They would both come with cautions printed on their shirts:

CAUTION: These two morons are HAZARDOUS to the Texans Offense and Viewers Health. They have proven to force viewers into fits of disbelief and sudden outburst of kicking a garbage cans.

Outside of that one year(which was not his rookie year btw) Mancz has either battled injuries or looked terrible

....but he started that 2016 season and was the #9 ranked Center in the NFL, as a first year starter. His injuries slowed him down and O'Brien/Devlin have slowed him down even more. He's healthy once again, had a nice start and was the Texans best rated lineman for the week.

The biggest mistake O'Brien/Devlin made....not having Mancz penciled in as starting Center for 2017 and starting the grooming process for Martin as RG last season. I think both players would've been further along come 2018.

I thought Mancz played guard vs Jags?
Yes he did and that indicates he may be one of our better linemen if he can do well at multiple positions.
What credit? Texans tried as hard as they could and offered ridiculous money of their own. Solder chose NY. More divine intervention than professional aptitude.
Or they could have paid ridiculous money to to beat out NY.

he didn't look very good at LG against the Giants if my memory serves me right. Maybe it was the switch in sides, maybe it was not practicing as the starter all week.

Money was close if I remember. NY offered more guaranteed. Either way with the tax benefits of playing for Houston would make the deals comparable after the atrocious taxes of playing in NYC and if Solder really wanted to be here he would be. He didnt want to play for the Houston Texans.

RG might be his better side - for mine you utilize the players at their best position/s.
This mix'n'match is frustrating as the players need time to adjust but we gotta do whatever we can to help Watson and the running game is key here.

Correct, for all we know....Martin may be the better OG and Mancz based on prior knowledge could be a better than expected OC.

I just want to get the best OL on the field.

Mancz is one of the best provided he can stay healthy.

Mancz is an example of the Injured/Troubled but talented kind of guys I want the Texans to draft in the late rds.

Im not even sure Rankin can play inside anymore. I was crazy high on the kid, but he's getting tossed around like Tina Turner on New Years Eve. Im hoping he gets stronger and meaner and at least puts up a fight moving forward and hopefully he can play somewhere on the line.

Mancz is hot and cold too though he needs to become more consistent and not go from good games to bad games.

FYI - taxes are paid based on where the games are played, e.g. Giants come play the Texans, there's no income tax on that game check. Flipside Texans go up to play the Giants they'll have to pay NY taxes on that game check.

Net effect is home state's impact is reduced.

Rankin will be fine, he's got the strnght/dog in him to play in the NFL. He doesn't have the feet to play LT in the NFL. Whether he makes it or not comes down to Devlin because I think he's got the work ethic to be successful in the NFL.

Jags OL was thought to be a strength coming into the season but injuries have derailed that. Same with Vikings.

Just goes to show you can sign as many high priced free agents as you want but most important factor at that position is continuity. Need to have the same starting 5 playing together for long stretches to perform well.

Well Rankins need to stop causing penalties. He was yanked right after his false start. Kelemete is clearly not healthy

October 2015, Mancz suffered a significant nondisclosed knee injury that required surgery and IR. He came back strong in 2016. But in Sept 2017, suffered a re-injury to his operated knee, and dealt with resulting significant issues through the entire 2017 season. He was limited in practices throughout this period and was not able to hold down any OL position effectively.

Didn't that injury happen when he was playing RG?

that is what I've been saying for seven weeks. Each position is a little if no a lot different than the others. I think D would have been better if left at left (pun intended). OT Jonah Williams who started all freshman games at right tackle for Alabama then was switched to LT for the next two seasons imo can be one to play all all positions with minimal training but there are few who can come out of college especially as a junior and make it work in NFL. We should also remember that some of the teams we played were thought to have very good defenses until we beat them.

well he will not make any if not on the field. There were vets making those mistakes this week seven. Yeah it looks bad, same with D but they need snaps. I'm more disturbed with a guy named JJ Watt who also was off side in that game.

Any opinions on why O'Brien and Devlin had him at LT?

Rankin also had the foot surgery this offseason which he probably has lingering effects from. That combined with being a rookie OL leads me to little expectations this season... but hope he continues to learn and pushes for the starting LG job next season!

Not to disagree, I like your line of thinking & agree 100%

To go a step further, imagine Ben Jones, Mancz, & Martin as our starting interior OL. True, Ben Jones wasn't a fan favorite (or coaches for that matter). But he wasn't as bad as some of the clowns we've been begging for them to replace. & unlike the guys we let go last season who are currently unemployed, he's got a job.

ATL, CLE, PHI, SF: 54
HOU: 75

(So the second worst OLs are closer to the second best OLs than they are to Houston by this metric!)

@Brickwallblitz: The Texans actually managed to only give up 5 QB hits this week...but still gave up significant pressure against Jacksonville.

@Brickwallblitz: Also: Lions offensive line has taken a massive step up this season.

(Wow it's actually possible to improve the OL after one year, don't need 3 years of alignment!)

Lions have finally found a running game. Adding Frank Ragnow to the mix helps as well of course.

It was dumb to start Rankin at all and to move Daveport. People can come up with reasons but it's still dumb.

When the alternative is starting Kendall Lamm you do whatever other option is on the table first. Even if it’s wheeling Rankin off the trainer’s table and moving Davenport to a position he hasn’t had any reps all offseason...

He was 1st team all SEC LT. He had foot surgery this offseason.

His size worked for him in college and he was ALL SEC. His size would work against him in the NFL at LT. It's still damn good pick if the team moves inside to LG and he becomes an ALL PRO.
