*MORE DETAILS IF/WHEN I HAVE THE TIME [CHECK BACK AT INTERVALS]

HOUSTON

Hamstrings
(Coutee, Fuller, Coates, Ejiofor) tend to be long recoveries, and can easily recur within the same season. At any time, they can turn a star into a dud.

Clowney is likely to now go back and forth from back to lower extremity. Back problems are seldom short term.

Griffin's hip is new

Hopkins' thumb and ankle (from foot) are new. As I pointed out in the last Injury Report is starting (beginning last season) to accumulate a lot of lower extremity injuries.

Jackson's new ankle is his first injury below the waist. He has remained surprisingly injury-free. He doesn't need a wheels problem.

Mercilus has come up with a new shoulder injury. Hopefully, it is not the tendon insertion of his pectoralis muscle which he tore last season.

Rankin's new ankle injury could very well be a compensatory injury following the foot fracture if it is still sore, which is certainly possible. Neither is very good, especially in a big man.

Watt is back on the Injury Report with a "new" knee injury. There is no mention of which knee. But late soreness with swelling would not be a great sign on the fracture side........nor would having 2 potentially afflicted knees (likely compensatory) be any better.

GIANTS

CB ELI APPLE (GROIN)........NEW.........HE COULD VERY WELL NOT BE PLAYING ON SUNDAY. HE IS THE 9TH HIGHEST GRADED cb (78.6) THIS SEASON AMONG THOSE WITH 40 SNAPS

LB CONNOR BARWIN (KNEE)........BARWIN MISSED MORE THAN 2 WEEKS OF PRACTICES AND PRESEASON GAMES WITH WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY REPORTED AS "GENERAL SORENESS," BUT IT HAS SINCE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A KNEE INJURY.........HE MISSED WEEK 1 WITH IT........STILL A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE.........HE HAS A HISTORY OF KNEE INJURIES

OLB OLIVIER VERNON (ANKLE)......... DURING A LATE AUG PRACTICE, HE WAS CARTED OFF THE FIELD........THERE WERE CONFLICTING REPORTS AFTER X-RAYS WERE TAKEN, BETWEEN DHIGH ANKLE SPRAIN VS A DEEP BRUISE AT THE TOP OF HIS ANKLE.......HE HAS YET TO PRACTICE SINCE THE SEASON BEGAN...........FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DISCERN, HE HAS ACTUALLY SUFFERED BOTH A DEEP BRUISE AND A GRADE III HIGH ANKLE SPRAIN...........IN 2013 AND 2015, HE SUFFERED SEVERE ANKLE SPRAINS

WR KAELIN CLAY (ANKLE)
.........NEW........CARTED OFF THE FIELD IN THE 2ND QUARTER OF THE LAST GAME

TE EVAN ENGRAM (ANKLE)........NEW........PLAYED WELL ALL LAST GAME.........WHEN INJURY WAS SUSTAINED HAS NOT BEEN REVEALED

Tweet from @MarkBermanFox26: Jadeveon Clowney on this Sunday: "I will play. It means a lot to me to be back out there w/ my teammates. It feels good to be able to go compete at a high level, very important to me.If I'm out there w/my pads I'm full go.We got to get a win.I need to be out there w/ my teammates"

Tweet from @AaronWilson_NFL: Texans' Christian Covington (knee, thigh) says he should be good to go Sunday against the Giants. Missed the Titans game

COMMENTARY [additions as time allows]:

Hopkins..........now the addition of a hamstring...........new...........this is exactly what my concern has been all along...........his accumulation of lower extremity injuries..........this last one likely compensatory

Clowney...........how limited?............back can be secondary to muscle tear vs disc..............both of these problems tend to become recurrent and chronic, especially if brought back prior to adequate rest and rehab...........I do not feel that Clowney should be put out there this Sunday............it will only encourage aggravation of his back problem and increase his risk for compensatory lower extremity injuries

So every receiver we have other than a rookie UDFA has a hamstring issue. Wonderful.
Ellington is still not yet "hamstrung."

However, with his history, we've got to hold our breath.:

Dec 3, 2017 Hamstring tear Grade 3 Ellington.............missed the final 4 games

Aug 26, 2016 Hamstring tear Grade 3................Ellington missed the entire season after tearing his hamstring in Week 3 of the preseason

May 5, 2015 NFL Hamstring tear undisclosed Grade (full detail disclosure not necessary since it didn't occur during the regular season)

I thought new strength coach was supposed to reduce injuries?
Actually, I believe that the Texans have the least number of players placed on IR with 5................only 4 for injuries (Hal for Hodgkins Lymphoma). Soft tissue injuries seem to have increased this year, as many teams (not only the Texans) have taken what I consider the new ill-advised approach of trying to "protect" the players by decreasing their exposure to contact.

If I remember correctly Foster had these type of lower extremity injuries before tearing his achillies. I'm also worried about Clowney this Sunday.

Foster missed all OTAs in 2013 with a severe calf tear. He then was again dogged by a significant calf tear in Aug 2015 missing all preseason and the first 3 weeks of the season............he came back to play for 3 1/2 games before rupturing his Achilles. The calf tear set him up for the Achilles rupture. The calf muscles' tendon is essentially the Achilles tendon. When the calf is injured (especially repeatedly or over a long period), it tends to go into spasm and shortens, tightening the Achilles tendon causing microtears over time..........when taking off explosively against the heavy resistance of the the shortened calf/Achilles, something has to give.

Although, an Achilles can occur without an apparent preceding calf injury, at least, a calf tear is not an injury that Clowney has suffered yet.

Speaking of achilles injuries I know this isn't the baseball spot, but I haven't seen you post anything about it over there. Do you have any more insight on Reddick's "sore" achilles that they are holding him out for? To me it seems like there has to be at least some micro tears in it.

There seems to be gobs of hamstring injuries but it's unusual to hear about groin injuries ? Are groin injuries injuries a thing of the past C&D ? I ask mainly because as a young man man (many decades ago)
playing football and competing in track as a sprinter ( quartermiler) I suffered several groin injuries as did several teammates.

Answered that for you in the Baseball / Astros section.

I've noticed that groin injuries are certainly not a thing of the past.............they seem to occur later in the season when muscles and players play while increasingly fatigued.

Tweet from @DeepSlant: Jadeveon Clowney should be good to go vs. Giants, per Bill O’Brien. #Texans

starting to wonder when the Texans are expecting Webster to be ready to go. If they didn't put him on the PUP list you would think it would be before week 6 sometime, but I feel like that is to soon for when his injuries occurred.

Coates and Coutee haven't had a FP yet.........not a great idea to put them out there for a game without.

With Jordan Thomas on the Injury Report for a new hip, we don't need a TE out for this game.

Had no doubt that Vernon and Apple would end up on the OUT list.

As fresh as Clay's and Engram's ankle is, when they play, we may see the effects.
Especially, today was Clay's first PF...........basically on a walk-through day.

same with Barwin's knee?

Barwin's injury is already ~6 weeks in. He played last week and managed 1 tackle, and his knee was no doubt still bothering him significantly. He has not had a FP this week until the walkthrough today and is not listed as QUESTIONABLE.........though I would again expect his performance Sunday to be questionable.

If Clowney ends up playing tomorrow, I will be worried about him. Even a relatively mild back muscle strain (and it's not a disc) requires ~3-6 weeks of rest and rehab.

@PatDStat: #Texans inactives

Keke Coutee, Peter Kalambayi, Roderick Johnson, Sammie Coates, Carlos Watkins, Joel Heath, Kayvon Webster.

@PatDStat: Jadeveon Clowney is active after missing last week vs the Titans. #Texans

Well, looks like my concern was justified.
