State of the O-line

Thanks, but I didn't have to go through the entire document... there is a table of contents that clearly show the lease terms/payments on page 15/16
Yeah, that lease said the total amt due is $1.5 mil plus utilities plus paying the NRG staff. So we're probably talking upwards of $2 mil total.

Doc, you were the exact person I was expecting to shoot down this straw grasping on my part.

Wasn't aware of his weight issues or indeed his less than stellar rehab. Great knowledge on your part.

Almost every time a large offensive lineman like Penn has a series foot injury, you can guarantee that they blow up. It's hard to keep their weight in check when they're laid up on the couch. :)

Some offensive lineman have to focus on keeping their weight up, then you have some who have to work their ass off keeping their weight down. Donald Penn is the latter.

Looks as if Donald Penn has lost his starting spot in Oakland and may get cut.

He's coming off a lisfranc but I wonder if he might make sense as a late pickup to come in and compete at OT.

John Simon another possible target as a victim of scheme change in Indy, could come in and help out with the OLB rotation.

I feel good about Gaine's grasp of the roster. He clearly recognizes the areas of weakness and is actively attempting to upgrade them. So, I feel good (for the first time in the team's history) about adding a couple quality pieces through the waiver wire this preseason. Gained will take advantage of our high wave priority coming off our 4-12 season.

While Gaine was here previously his main job was to find those street free agents like Quentin Demps during the Hard Knocks training camp when we had a need at safety.

It seemed like we had more consistent success with street FAs than late round picks.

The Texans offensive line has been picked to finish as worse as they did in 2017. However, if quarterback Deshaun Watson can stay healthy, it may accentuate the offensive line’s play and keep the team competitive.

More Message Board fodder for the OLine group - the coachs should display a copy of this statement on every olinemans locker door so they see it at the beginning of every day before they dress for practice.

Right?! Maybe that'll light a fire under their ass and wake them up!

Multiple sources are reporting that the Giants big FA signing left tackle Nate Solder is having a poor training camp

Olivier Vernon just made Nate Solder look like a turnstile, coming off the edge. Manning stepped up and scrambled, but would probably have been sacked in a game. #Giants

Alec Ogletree blows past Nate Solder, untouched, would have sacked Eli Manning ... Manning’s pass was tipped up in the air and intercepted by Olivier Vernon.

Count that play for the defense ... #Giants

  1. Olivier Vernon looks unstoppable. Whether it's Nate Solder or Ereck Flowers, whether they have him standing up or with his hand in the dirt, neither tackle could handle him. The only player to have any success stopping him was TE Rhett Ellison on one play.

Sterling Shepard has looked impressive fast all camp, and here he beats William Gay and Eli Manning drops it in over top. Nice throw ... next play Olivier Vernon goes right by Nate Solder #Giants

  1. Nate Solder hasn't exactly looked like the dominant LT he was over the final 8 games of the 2017 season with NEP. It's camp, I'm not going to overreact on OL play, but Vernon has got the best of him more times than I would like to have seen. Entire OL getting used to Bettcher.

Gotta get your LT in the draft unless you just get lucky there is a falling out in organization and a team is willing to deal like Seattle did (Duane Brown, who was drafted by the Texans in the first round).

I’m not going to rag on Davenport or whoever else Texans run out there cause it’s not their fault they’re being miscast into a no win situation. I’ve heard nothing positive so far in camp in regards to the left side.

There is going to be development time for anyone, even a first round guy, to adjust to the speed and physical nature of the NFL, but you gotta start with a solid building block of size, athletic ability, smarts and desire.

Gaine will learn to identify and move up in order to secure this need moving forward, I just hope it’s not too late.

Trent Brown is supposedly looking great in pass pro at LT for the Pats. Sure wish that Gaine would've traded for him.

I was impressed with the Oline last night in pass protection. Hard to tell on run blocking on first blush, but Davenport in particular I though looked really good in pass pro.

I'm not sure who the back up tackles are, but I saw some good stuff in pass pro from those guys too. They showed great discipline in not lunging/leaning too early and letting the edge rushers pretty much run themselves out of the play.

Davenports arms are such a massive advantage. He looks more athletic and stronger this season. The times I noticed him in pass pro the defender had no shot.

Hopefully it'll be time to start giving OB props for developing some guys on that side of the ball.

Those two OT's are so big you need Google Maps to get around .

You mean Mike Devlin, don't you? :shades:

I thought both units did well last night. No sacks given up and the QB's, for the most part, had good time to throw. Saw a few plays where Davenport looked pretty good in pass protection. Didn't notice who was going up against him but it looked like Davenport was not overwhelmed and handled his assignments well. I will be keeping an eye on his, and the rest of the O-lines, development as the preseason moves on.

The 2nd unit didn't look too bad either in pass protection and I'm really pulling for DQ to make the cut. It was just good to see him out there playing again.

Devlin too...maybe especially when it's all said and done...

I'm trying to contain my excitement, but that looked like an Oline that is well coached last night. The offense in general looked like a well oiled machine as far as timing/rhythm.

Need to see how it goes when the real games get started, but if Davenport keeps up this level of play somebody deserves big time props.

You mean maybe like Rick Smith ?

I was unable to watch until second half but #63 Roderick Johnson was horrible. I liked what I saw of Q and Webb surprised me as I thought he should not be on roster. If preseason games don't mean much then someone should tell Andy Reid and Romeo. That end of game pass breakup by Josh Thornton was beautiful.

I didn't hear Wade Smith this morning but the 610 guys said he wasn't keen on Kelemete and Nick Martin's play last night .

Got to watch the game and the T's looked good. Like everything else, it's a puzzle and if the pieces make the puzzle whole, good things could happen.

Last season, Su'a-Filo was such a hinderance at LG, that it took the LT and C to ensure his job got done, if the TE has to slip in and help the T's who are trying to help the G"s.....damn it becomes a mess.

Last night, for the first time in a long time, the Texans OL looked as though the pieces could handle their jobs independently and as a team.....sure was nice to see the TE (JA) catch 2 TD's last night instead of being straddled as the 6th OL.

I believe the addition of Kelemete and Fulton will pay dividends this season.

—The Texans can actually block the second level. Look, I know the Chiefs linebackers are terrible against the run. But still. This is something that hasn’t consistently happened since 2015, when the strength of the Texans’ offense was Ben Jones, Duane Brown, Brandon Brooks, Derrick Newton, and Xavier Su’a-Filo; they comprised an offensive line that, believe it or not, won games on their own. They moved the first level and put helmets on the second level. Since then, Houston hasn’t been able to block the second level at all. It’s been horrendous. However, last night, Julie’n Davenport and Senio Kelemete made some pretty second level blocks. Just getting a helmet on a chest is a celebration after the spotted deer stumbling, drunken wobbling, and pillow fight contact the Texans’ offensive line has had for the last two seasons.

—Speaking of Davenport, he looks strong! Outside on the edge, he devoured bull rushes. He looks wider. He has triceps! There’s reasons to worry about the offensive line (ahem, Seantrel Henderson), but hopefully Davenport isn’t one of them. I’m excited to watch him actually play real football against competition.

Won't be shocked if Mancz takes Martins place at some point this year. Saw it posted that he didn't allow any pressures but I watched one play 3 times that Martin missed his man and there was pressure right up the gut. He missed a reach block pretty bad on a running play that got blown up as well. Kelemete got beat noticeably 1 on 1 inside on a passing play as well. I don't think we're really going to know how improved our OL is until the regular season when we'll see more stunts and blitzing. They're looking better than last year's line at this point though IMO.

I wasn't happy with Martin at all , he got multiple times in the run game and was just "adequate" in pass pro. "the only returning starter" might shoulda lost his starting gig to Mancz.

Davenport …. acquitted himself fairly well. I had my eye on him on every snap. He didn't make any mistakes and looked fluid in letting pass rushers run themselves out of the play using those long arms. Hope he looks as good when it matters.

Why on earth is Kendall Lamm back after last years debacle ?! He looked good in preseason last year then sh!t his pants when the games counted. That dude shouldn't be coaching OT in pop warner much less playing OT in the NFL.

Glad Tricky Rick is gone.
