Any of you gonna admit to owing Jadeveon Clowney an apology?

Lol, it's not like this is some master plan. They've been trying to sign him to an extension.

They said that months ago, they still haven't got a deal done. Why do you think this is?

Could it be that unlike under Ricky, Gaine doesn't want to extend a guy with Clowney's injury history. Maybe the Texans Dr.'s are seeing what CnD has been telling us and dont want to sign off on Clowney's health so Gaine has put off the extension talks. If Clowney gets an extension it will be McNair's call.

But go on and continue to believe what you want, I'm certainly not going to change your mind.

Nope or they wouldn't be trying to extend him at all. Your attempt to slag RS while promoting Gaine is illogical on this.

What are most likely sticking points are length and guarantees.

Bottom line, play out the last year was not Gaine's original strategy so don't pretend it was.

Nope the bottom line is Gaine hasn't extended Clowney, and you know Ricky would have.

We aren't going to agree so lets move on.

Personally, I'm hoping that some calls have been made by Gaine to shop him. If someone wants to pay a ransom for him, let his knee be someone else's risk. I'm not sure we can trust everything we've heard on what's going on behind the scenes.

“These things take time,” Gaine said. “It’s a work in progress. They’re developing. So it just takes a little time with contracts.”

So they're still working on a longer term contract.

Which very well may not be offered until after this season, if at all. This statement at the end of the story still seems to be a more realistic outcome to me.

As a doctor I would think you would get the difference between goal and outcome. If their goal was play out this year they wouldn't be talking and their desired outcome would be assured. The only reason to do different is because the goal is otherwise, i.e. extend him just like they say they are trying to do.

Hey, I wish they would cut off talks, play him and then franchise him until the inevitable knee injury, chancing he miracle walks after getting too expensive and becoming someone else's problem. But just play out this year is not their goal. May be the outcome, but not the goal.

If you say so it must be true.

Or maybe McNair wants to do a long term deal with his fellow alum and Gaine doesn't

Clowney hasn't lived up to his RD1-001 selection....that's the bottom line. Clowney has not had the overall impact that JJ did when he came to the Texans. Clowney has been injured goods but he's a very good defender against the run but doesn't come close to being the same disrupt-er in the passing game. Last season there wasn't enough pressure in the passing game and the DB's were roasted. Even the few times Watt and Clowney took the field together, Watt was still the dominating factor.

I mentioned a while back (before the draft) that I would've traded Clowney to recoup picks for the 2018 NFL draft. I still think that would've been a very good move for the team. If Clowney is signed long-term, then goes Cushing on the team, everyone will be calling out Gaine for being a bad GM. He's not going to win in this scenario regardless. If I'm Gaine, I cut my losses now, get a couple of good picks for 2019.....then draft smart. A good to great DE or OLB will make everyone forget Clowney. That's the better roll of the dice in my book.

No doubt goal and outcome can be different. However in this case, I would not be surprised if the present goal discussions are to placate Clowney in such a way that a true extension can be delayed until after the upcoming season plays out, and Clowney's condition's effect on his performance and availability is better defined. I would also not rule out that one of those options being discussed with Clowney is who he would consider potential trade partners.

There can be a lot of team PR effort that can go into trying to maintain at least the appearance of "good faith negotiations"........in order to avoid being forced into a bad outcome. We'll find out soon enough.

Actually, no we won't. Happens all the time that folks try to get a contract done and don't. Not just the NFL, generally.
Since it's almost a forgone conclusion that no contract will be signed this year if not prior to the regular season, "We'll find out soon enough" was referring to being signed or not.

Once Smith was gone, I thought people would sit back and see what Gaine actually accomplishes. I didn't think I would see posts promoting Gaine by simply saying Rick Smith would have done this or that incorrectly. I guess the obsession with Ricky lives on. SMDH

More evidence Ricky isn't in charge anymore.

Let it go man. This offseason, you've probably mentioned Rick Smith more than Gaine. I thought you would be happy with Smith out of the building.

BTW, on his way out the door, did you take a second to thank Ricky for drafting Watson?

Just pointing out that hopefully the way contracts are going to be done is changing under Gaine. Even if the way the Texans org isn't changing the way they get players in the draft/FA.

I'm supposed to thank Ricky after 10 yrs of abject failure for getting me a QB that has 2 busted knees after 6 games as a pro? OK Thanks Ricky.

So far Gaine has accomplished signing a bunch of backup OL in FA and had a good draft since he didn't have his 2 highest picks. The best thing he can accomplish is talking McNair out of extending Clowney. If he can do that he will have had a successful offseason even if only 2 of the 5 new OL work out.

Isn’t that what he already did? As far as the OL, he didn’t have better options anyway. The serviceable offensive linemen wanted to be paid like they were franchise guys, which they weren’t! He got the best he could with what he had to work with. Now, next year should be a different story. I think he knows we need to improve the line and there’s no doubt in my mind that he will do just that, unless there’s another defensive freak (Watt/Clowney-like) or shut down corner that is there for the taking when we’re on the clock.

The Texans are being extremely careful with the former top overall pick after he missed the entire offseason on the heels of arthroscopic knee surgery. There's nothing wrong with the knee at this point, but Clowney is working his way into football shape. Getting to be full-go in practice is expected to happen soon. A contract extension, though, is unlikely to happen at this point as the team has leverage on its side and can have him play this year under a fifth-year team option and then make him their franchise player for 2019 to control his rights. Things can always change in a negotiation, but there's been no momentum toward striking a compromise. This isn't an acrimonious situation, though.

Clowney will always be compared to ballers taken after him. Such a fruitful draft and we ended up with clowney and that guard

There is nothing wrong if a player taken later ending up being better if the player you took is a pro bowl talent. The problem is if the player you took that high ends up being nothing special at all.

I hear ya but man I will always wonder what if with that draft. Throw in the injuries and him not really having a true position. He shows signs but others have proven to be the real deal. Throw in what would RAC have done with those others. Oh well. It's his contract year. Here's to him breaking the bank next year :wesmantexanfan:
