Texans Talk Greatest ______ of All-Time

So about this time last year I asked folks if they'd like to put together a list of who everyone here thought were the greatest running backs the league has known. Came up a pretty solid success as we had a dozen and a half or so contributors and some nice football talk in an otherwise downtime and nonsensical time of year.

And so I was thinking fellas, same time of year same downtime, same nonsense ... should we maybe then have a sequal? Was thinking if enough of y'all are interested we can throw some suggestions/nominations around for what would be the best idea, and of course I'd be happy to compile and reveal whatever we come up with.

Best Quarterback?
Best Team?
Best Oiler/Texan?
Best Wide Receiver?
Best Linebacker?
Best Coach?

Up to everyone here who gives a rip to decide if and what we should do based on responses. I'll go first and say that WR or QB are what I'd look forward to the most. They're pretty straightforward with tons of great candidates that we can all digest fairly well. But I'm merely getting the ball rolling I hope.

So, blah blah blah ... Texans Talk, what do you think?

I think that best WR or QB would be a pretty short discussion... so how about LB? Ryans/Cushing/Sharpton/ Mercilus/Clowney/Peek/McKinney?

edit: Reed?

LBers have to be broken up into 2 separate catagories..

For instance.

ILBer Mike Singletary

OLBer Lawrence Taylor

Didn't mean Texans greatest of these options, but NFL-wise like the RBs from last time.

My bad... would still like to do LB's... so many greats. Butkus/Taylor/Thomas/Howly/Ham/Nitschke/Lewis/Singletary/Bednarik?

Just to be clear, I wasn't laying out specific choices there. Just running through examples of whatever y'all might like to nominate and decide on.

If you'd like to nominate or make a case for inside or outside lb by all means, bud.

Sorry but Rice may not be the best.catching a ball isn't that hard to begin with, especially 10 yrd dump passes. He' the best because he lasted long enough to catch more balls? That's not best, that' just bigger numbers because you'e thrown a lot

Umm no. He had phenominal hands & routes and an uncanny ability after the catch all somehow done with 4.7 speed.

What you think everyone was stupid when he went to 11 straight pro bowls (plus a 12th after an injury season) and all except which was also All Pro? He only got defended by the best and all but a couple failed.

All you are doing is quoting stuff you read. Phenomenal hands? Lol there's no such thing. That doesn't make him best ever. What's so uncanny about running away from people? I played tag as a kid,it's pretty easy to do. No, I'm not joking. I'm pointing out how stupid, best ever sports arguments are.theres nothing special about running around on a field and catching a ball. It's not an actual skill that serves any purpose to mankind.its an invented distraction once they realized people were dumb enough to sit in front of a tv all day, and call being a jock something important to pay attention to.
Yes ,I watch sports.yes, it entertains me.
But there's no such thing as a greatest ever at doing something as useless as playing a game for money.

Start with crap and just kept crapping. Thru his greatest era I was a Cowboys fan and for part lived in San Fran so throughout I watched a ton of Niners ball sinee the real SB was the NFC Championship Game.

Are you old enough to have watched his best years?

I'm 53. Nothing I said was crap.Just a logic perspective you've never heard before. I talked about perception of reality and you're still just seemingly going on about seeing a jock catch a ball. There's nothing great about catching a ball. Being the best at it is a useless accomplishment. More catches doesn't mean best at it.it just means more catches. If he's open..was that his doing or the coach and play call? He's just another jock catching a ball ( I want to make sure it's understood these are just words on a screen and I haven't done anything to make it personal or insulting to the best of my knowledge..people tend to put negative emotions behind words on a screen ,where none is intended.im sure you're a very likeable person, as am I :) )

So did you pay any special attention to the Niners or pretty much only when they played your team (which was?) or a buddy made you?

Otherwise its just a generic opinion denigrating WRs. Which also means you didn't pay any special attention to them.

Do some people catch better than others, and even to varying degrees of better?
Seeing and committing to lanes and angles of getaway are uncanny abilities of running away from people.
You're talking like people don't show discernible levels of capability at sports than others. And of course they do.
Who gives a sh*t about some better for mankind argument, that has nothing to do with here.
There's a such thing as being greatest ever at any endeavor, irrespective of it's value to anything else at large.

It seems that you have missed the entire point ,of my point. I don' worship jocks and catching balls is not a special skill.
Only tv has made it important. There' no best ever at anything. You watched a guy catch balls on tv. That doesn't mean anything g about greatness. You've been told to think of him as great because he caught balls.

Well there can be a worst post ever, so there is that.

MeatBear, is that you??!
Don't feed the troll.......

It' simply an adult, critical thinking perspective, that you don't understand.
Just because you can't
Grasp a viewpoint, doesn't mean there's any trolling. I hate that childish internet term.

So you can answer my perfectly reasonable and relevant questions then?

I disagree, but I never mentioned Rice. Are you trying to start a new thread? Or just start an argument? If so, in either case, that's trollish

You left out a few for each list, but I get your point, which coincides with the point of this thread which seems to have eluded @BwhiteshoesJ

Best Quarterback? Dan Marino
Best Team? 85 Bears
Best Oiler/Texan? JJ Watt
Best Wide Receiver? Calvin Johnson
Best Linebacker? Dick Butkus
Best Coach? Vince Lombardi

Answers above based on ability at prime of career judged against their piers, not career

Jerry Rice smoked every receiver in every category other than speed. WTF are you kidding? You are too young to have watched him or any all time greats for the most part. You have no clue.

QB and WR have no debate. Brady and Jerry Rice smoked so far past the competition that you'd have to be drunk on moonshine or worse to suggest otherwise. That, or just hate the Pats or 80/90's 49ers.

Lol I'm 53, I saw him every weekend.
There's' nothing important or spectacular about catching a ball and running with it. Being the best at it is a useless accomplishment in life. It's only tv that made it important. Getting paid millions to do it is 50 times just as dumb. There is no greatest ever jock.

Appreciate the feedback, but this isn't really what I was getting at. I was proposing another greatest ever list, such as last year's running backs edition, and tossing out some suggestions for the particular would-be topic.

I can actually have that perspective and still like watching sports. It's still entertainment. But that's a it is entertainment. It's not important and does nothing for your life.
Yes, but just because something is not important does not mean that someone can't be better at that unimportant task than other people. Movies are just entertainment, but Anthony Hopkins is a better actor than Pauly Shore.

BTW, I hope you do realize that Billy Johnson's shoes weren't actually white.

Your very existence in this thread is the definition of internet troll: "to antagonize (others) online by deliberately posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content" Merriam-Webster

See, I'm not a fan of country music. I despise it actually. That said, this might be the first time in 14+ years I've said it in this forum, in spite of numerous threads and posts about country music. As a freakin' adult, I understand that entering a conversation that I have no interest in just to post irrelevant and stupid opinions is bad internet etiquette.

I suggest you just avoid this thread if you are unable to comprehend fans having a fun discussion about an entertainment medium. Otherwise, bug off. We have simple ways of dealing with simple minds.

Country music sucks.

Although he was great at what he does/did I cant stand Garth Brooks, because he destroyed my favorite type of music. Southern rock

Good thing all country music ain’t bad:

Nothing difficult or greatest ever about catching short passes.

Lol you are way off the mark. Nothing I said is irrelevant or trolling.its simply that the common man has no critical thinking skills anymore..
Don't worry honey,I'm done in this thread.
The fact is I gave you a basic logic lesson but you're thinking with emotion and couldn't' grasp it.

I haven' thought about him for years. I have to go see if I've got some old trading cards. My favorite was Harold Jackson

Your arguments are silly on every front. Others have pointed out that you can still hold your views and be off base with regards to the context of this thread.

I’ll actually Come from another angle.

You call it entertainment and then say it’s not important in the next sentence.

I don’t know about you, but entertainment is very important for a lot of people. It’s the reason entertainers make so much money. It’s an escape for people. It helps people bond. It helps with anxiety for some folks. Just about everyone seeks entertainment in some form. It’s essential for beings with complex brains.

As far as football as entertainment and not requiring any special skills to “run and catch a football” that’s about the biggest crock of **** you’ve said here and you know it.
