Trading down 5 or so spots and throwing in a late 6th or 7th to get a pick 100 spots or so higher gives us a nice chance to have some talent fall into our laps.

I’d rather have a mid 3rd and a 5th than a high 3rd and a late 6th in the draft.

I dont think Lamm makes the team.

I think they can find a starting OT at 68 if they do their homework. I know many disagree with this. But it's happened many times before on other teams.

Bahtkiari/Viatia/Leno/Armstead/Dawkins/Villanueva to name a few.
 
We're the only team in NFL history to trade our starting qb and a 2nd round pick for 16 million dollars.

Maybe steelb has been right all along about the misers on Kirby.

I would. I posted this in the NFL forum when I read he was released:

Bryce Petty released by Jets. Strong possibility Texans pick him up off waivers. Good arm talent/size, decent mobility. Needed time and reps to adjust to NFL defenses coming into league after playing at Baylor. Was a project when drafted but Texans could buy low and have a quality backup...

I'm all for bringing in anyone the coaches think can compete with what we have on the roster (not a high bar at QB after Watson). And Petty does have some plus physical tools to work with, and I remember him getting very positive reviews for his personality, intelligence, leadership, and competitiveness.

But I would stop way short of saying Petty did anything similar to Watson in college. They are both mobile and both played in spreads. That's about where it stops. Watson was far, far more advanced in the passing game coming out of college. He made plenty of advanced reads, was given some control of the line of scrimmage, and threw a variety of routes. Petty played in a one read offense, had zero control in the huddle or at the line, and basically threw only two routes on over half his college throws.

Bring him in and see what he's got. But he is a huge, huge project. And I'm not sure Watson is advanced enough yet that we can afford to take developmental time away from him to give to a backup.

Really depends on how far along Watson is in his recovery to determine how many reps we give he backups. I’d think it would take more reps away from Weeden and Webb than anything.

For now, yes I agree. Once we get closer to the start of the season and Watson is full go I want him getting pretty much everything in practice. That makes it pretty pointless to have a developmental backup.

That's where I stand, at least.

That’s what will most likely happen. The big question is whether he is worth more as a backup with the extra training camp reps than Webb/Weeden. I think he is.

Personally, I doubt it. I think there's too much of a curve for him.

But I'm all for bringing him in and seeing what he's got. It's not like Weeden needs the throws in practice.

I was just pointing out that he ran the spread and is mobile. Isn't that what everybody on this board has been clamoring for, a young guy with talent that's mobile to develop. Plus unlike bringing in a rookie to develop, Petty has starting experience and has a feel for the NFL game, unlike bringing in a rookie QB.

AP) — Devon Still describes his daughter as “your typical, soon-to-be 8-year-old.” Nothing’s typical about Leah Still, who faced long odds against reaching that eighth birthday. Or about her father, a former NFL defensive lineman who retired after last season and has immersed himself in a second career — helping other families deal with childhood cancer.

“We call it recycling our pain,” Still said.

Still retired last December after another foot injury sidetracked his career, deciding that at 28 years old, it was time to move on to something else. It was a difficult moment — he’d played football since age 13 and spent three years with the Cincinnati Bengals and one with the Houston Texans.

“The most successful people know when it’s time to call audibles,” he said.

Even when that means giving up a promising career that began when he was a second-round pick out of Penn State.

“Since I got to the NFL in 2012, I feel it’s been a roller coaster,” Still said in a phone interview from Houston, where he now lives. “I tell people all the time that my life has been like climbing a mountain. When I got to the top of the mountain, the view wasn’t what I thought. Making it in the NFL wasn’t what I thought. I had so many injuries.”

A lot of people have been clamoring for that, yes. I'd rather have the best overall QB than just the most mobile one. My main issue with this thought process of "aligning" the backup to Watson's skill set is that you just aren't going to find any other player with his combination of skills. You'll find mobile guys who can't throw or you'll find accurate, intelligent passers who can't be involved in the QB run game. No matter what you find, we aren't running anything close to the same offense with the backup that we are with Watson, so we might as well just find the best QB possible.

As far as Petty goes, he does have starting experience. But if we're only using his time with the Jets then he's just about the worst starting QB I've ever seen. He has shown zero feel for the NFL game. He's no more developed than a rookie would be.

Petty's has 4 years under his belt as an NFL QB....his developmental period is over. The Jets system may have not been a good match and possibly O'Brien's old system before Watson's arrival. I think O'Brien's adjusting his offense to take advantage of Watson's skill set which would be tremendously refreshing. As for Petty, he's a smart QB with the physical gifts to do some things in the right system. O'Brien's system could be the right fit....it's at least worth a try.

Agreed. Look how much better Goff looked with Mcvay coaching him instead of Fisher.

Look how SUPERBOWL MVP Nick Foles looked when he left the Rams and had Pederson/Frank Reich coaching him.

Jets had 2 OCs in the 3 seasons Petty was on the team. And just made their 3rd OC change this offseason. A change of scenery may just be exactly what he needs.

Ideally we’ll never have to find out if Petty actually reaches his potential because DW4 stays healthy the rest of his career. But I like Petty and his upside at the backup QB position better than the options on the roster.

Development means growth. If his growth period is over then why would anyone take a shot at him? That makes zero sense. Without further growth, he's not worthy of even a PS spot on any team in the league based on what he's shown so far.

The only reason anyone would take a chance on him is because they think he can be developed further than he already has. If this is the finished product there isn't a system on earth that could make him successful.

I would use coached up and who knows, O'Brien's new offensive system may be the right fit. The good thing, Watson's QB1. If Petty is brought in, he's part of the competition. Petty came from the same type of college offense that deemed Case Keenum an UDFA....Keenum finallly got to the Vikings and a system fit, the turnaround was amazing.

Agreed Joker, Watson will get 80-90% of the snaps if he's full ready to go. Especially since Coach has implemented a new system.

Great leader and reads offenses and plays with his hair on fire.
HOF for sure.
 
After Ramsey's rookie season I got the sense that him and Hopkins had a genuine dislike for eachother. Came across this mic'd up segment from the forgettable Jags/Texans road game last season and he was pretty respectful to Hopkins. Maybe it was because they won in a blowout but good to see respect from the opponent for our #10:
