Texans Select 3.68 Justin Reid S Stanford

is there a left tackle on the roster im not aware of??? orlando brown and the oregon kid were there. didnt know we had ot locked up!

Best safeties we have ever had easily! Love this pick. BPA at a position of need. Elite size/speed combo and production. If his slide had anything to do with his brother Eric Reid you know Bob Mcnair is going to mention they are "taking a chance" on a kid with first round talent.

I think it's a good pick. I was afraid they would reach for whatever ot was available

so lets bpa and get rudolf and the louletta qb with our other 2 picks. hur dur.

My take
: This was a good pick for the Texans, who needed to improve the secondary after the unit ranked 24th last season in yards allowed per game. General manager Brian Gaine made it clear Houston felt it did enough in free agency to have the flexibility to draft the best available player instead of picking just for need. If Reid was at the top of the Texans' draft board, they were able to do that while also filling a need. Reid was first-team All-Pac-12 and adds another athletic player to an already-impressive defense. Houston has other needs, namely at left tackle, but the selection of Reid makes sense for a Texans team trying to get back to having a top-rated defense.

How he fits: The Texans upgraded their secondary this offseason by adding safety Tyrann Mathieu in free agency and Reid with their first pick. The Texans re-signed free safety Andre Hal last offseason, but Reid should compete with him for a spot right away. Reid is athletic and the Texans will like his size at 6-foot-1 and 207 pounds. Reid started 11 of 14 games last season, with 99 tackles, 6.5 for loss, five interceptions and six pass breakups. Reid saw a lot time on special teams at Stanford and could make an impact there for Houston, too.

Reid said he and older brother Eric, who played for the 49ers, break down film together: “He let me into some NFL strategy and what they were doing against opposing teams so that I would already have a feel for that how process or routine would be whenever I got to this stage.”

The Texans like the versatility Reid brings at safety. “[He’s got] interchangeable ability in terms of playing strong safety, free safety, ability to play the run and ability to play the pass,” Brian Gaine said. “We feel like he’s a fully dimensional safety at the position.”

Now go sign his brother and have a secondary that can compete with Jax as the best in the NFL. The Texans damned sure have the cap space for that.

Justin Reid is 6-0, 207 and ran a 4.40 at the combine. NFL Draft Scout rated him as the No. 1 free safety in the draft and projected him in the first or second round.

.@LanceZierlein on Justin Reid, who he had as a Round 1 or 2 selection: "He has the talent to become an early starter and a good one. Reid's instincts and play traits should make him a safe selection with Pro Bowl potential down the road." #Texanshttps://t.co/KpR0TVjJqC

#Texans Justin Reid: I love being on the field. Kickoff team, you name it.

Justin Reid on playing with Watt, Clowney and the talented #Texans defense: "It's going to be awesome to learn from those guys"

ESPN: Reid grades out as a plug-and-play starter at free safety. He’s a ballhawk with excellent speed and athleticism, who has experience playing safety, nickel and cornerback. While he certainly can handle a versatile role in the NFL, we think he’s at his best working as a center fielder in a single-high safety look.

Rotoworld: Texans selected Stanford S Justin Reid with the No. 68 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. It’s the Texans’ first selection of the 2018 draft. Reid (6’1/207) turned pro as a true junior after earning first-team All-Pac 12 and second-team All-American in 2017 with 6.5 tackles for loss and five interceptions. Reid further caught attention with a blistering Combine, running 4.4-flat with an explosive 10-foot-8 broad jump and twitchy 6.65 three-cone time. The brother of ex-49ers SS Eric Reid, Justin has experience covering slot receivers and tight ends, and playing in centerfield and the box. Reid’s versatility, athleticism, and smarts (31 Wonderlic) raise his chances of becoming an instant contributor.

CBS Sports: (B) He is a solid playmaking safety who will help a secondary that needs help. He will push for time right away.

SI: (B+) Justin Reid | S | STANFORD
There were already two quality safeties aboard with Tyrann Mathieu and Andre Hal, but more teams are playing with three safeties these days. Reid’s presence could lend more flexibility for how Mathieu is deployed. And if Mathieu, who signed a one-year deal, is not retained in 2019, the Texans will have an early jump on replenishing this position.

Scouting Report: He doesn’t bring the kind of linebacker-like physicality of older brother Eric, but Justin has the athleticism and instincts to be one of the league’s better safeties in coverage. He’s at his best in centerfield, but is also capable of matching up with athletic tight ends and has the strength and physicality to play the run.

I've read some insinuation that Justin isn't a big hitter in a few places. That's bunk. He hits in the secondary. He comes up and hits in short yardage. That is not an issue. I don't know of an issue, which makes me wonder if there's an issue the public doesn't know about. That's how dumbfounded I am that Reid made it to 3.68. The Steelers took Edmunds at 1.28 (about where I thought Reid would go). But, I'm convinced Edmunds was picked as a nickel LB to replace Shazier. The Steelers did not take a college LB, but did take a true Safety later in Penn State's Marcus Allen. The Bengals took Jessie Bates, a centerfield type FS with man cover skills. Reid can do that, and like GEICO, gives you more.

Is Justin Reid the best value pick in the 2018 draft? Yes broheim, it's not even close.

Can say this was truly BPA pick without crossing my fingers behind my back, lol. What I like most about him is sound technician in both run and passing games. Should fill a lot of empty holes we all use to scream, “how’d that guy get so open” or “someone tackle that player” :scarygirl:

Justin Reid’s NFL draft drop stirs speculation about Kaepernick effect
Stanford safety’s brother Eric Reid known for take-a-knee activism

Valerie Richardson - The Washington Times - Saturday, April 28, 2018
Every year a few top college football prospects are picked later than expected in the NFL draft, but Justin Reid’s tumble has raised questions about the Kaepernick effect.

A Stanford safety, Reid fell Friday to the third round, where he was selected 68th overall by the Houston Texans, after being pegged as a first-round talent on many mock drafts.

ESPN analysts asked whether his draft status had been hurt by his brother, free-agent safety Eric Reid, who was Colin Kaepernick’s closest ally during the hotly disputed take-a-knee protests.

Draft guru Mel Kiper, who had Justin Reid ranked 29th, said he was “amazed” that the highly regarded talent was still on the board at the start of the third round.

“I wonder if some of that is with his brother, with that situation,” said analyst Todd McShay, who rated Reid 28th. “He’s a late first-round prospect.”

Eric Reid, a Pro Bowler who went 18th overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, is still waiting for a contract after kneeling for the national anthem in 2017, as he did in 2016 alongside Kaepernick when they played for the San Francisco 49ers.

“Eric Reid is his brother, the safety out of LSU who played for San Francisco, and of course was very active in dealing with Colin Kaepernick in the anthem protest,” said ESPN’s Trey Wingo.

Eric Reid told reporters last month that he would no longer kneel during the anthem, but “you wonder if that has affected his [Justin’s] draft status,” said Wingo.

“And that would be a shame, by the way, if something that Eric his brother did has affected his draft status,” Wingo said. “Judge each and every kid on his own merits. We don’t know if that’s the case but it’s certainly fair to wonder when you look at the talent there.”

NFL alleging that team owners colluded against him after he sat out the 2017 season without a contract.

Justin Reid said last month that he would stand for the national anthem, telling the Guardian, “I’m not as much of a vocal person in that situation. I don’t really like drama. I don’t want to deal with that.”

THE REST OF THE STORY

This was a very good pick. I had him more in the 30-50 range but no doubt he was excellent value where he was picked.

If you really want to put a positive spin on this draft -

Rd 1 - D. Watson
Rd2 - Justin Reid
Rd 3 - M Rankin
Rd 4 - Jordan Akins
Rd 5 - Keke Coutee
Rd 6 - Duke Ejiofor
Rd 7 - Kelly/Kalambayi/Thomas

You can look at it this way:

Deshaun Watson for Jabrill Peppers + Denzel Ward. Not knocking the Big 10 DBs, but all 32 teams make that deal, in retrospect. Even the Browns.

With the rule changes should teams even want "big hitters" anymore? Give me the safeties with superior ball/coverage skills over the heavy hitters all day..those type of safeties days are numbered in today's league.

I haven't seen Reid lead with his head. Maybe he has, I don't know. But, you still need to give good legal hits. At least until they start wearing flags.

If he fell because of his brother, then I think we have reached a point of absurdity and the guilt by association is ridiculous.

That's also a way of looking at it. If it comes down to who the Browns took.

If you look at those drafts and who would have been good for us had we kept those picks though, it might look something more like..

Deshaun Watson for Ryan Ramczyk/Josh Rosen.

Now I'd imagine most everyone in Houston would still opt for Watson, as he's looked very good thus far while Rosen hasn't taken a snap in the league yet, and Deshaun is already adopted as Houston's own. But only time will ultimately tell.

Just saying it's not as cut and dry as to who Clev chose.

If Justin fell because of his brother's workplace issues, then hopefully the players have learned a valuable lesson. Doubtful

What lesson would that be? That you will be unjustifiably be punished for someone else’s actions?

You cant be doing that kinda sh!t at work.

Atleast I cant, can you?

Read above he stated he stated he would stand, and he’s not his brother!!!

He's already burned that bridge to the ground and is going to suffer the consequences.

We can all hope Justin is his own man and is smart enough (Stanford) not to ruin his career too.

This is a very interesting take on justice you have where a person should be punished for the "sins" of the brother.

To steer this back to the road, Reid has exceptional athleticism (obviously), but he profiles as an NFL safety with 96th percentile athleticism according to his Z-Sparq. Basically he has the physical tools to be elite to say the least.

Hav the Texans ever had someone with his athleticism at safety? I don’t think so and it’s not even close. Well not until Honey Badger signed but he does not have the optimal size.

This guy checks all the boxes, am I missing something? He tested elite athletically, has the in game production 5 INT's and 2nd team All American honors so he's not a gym rat, has prototypical size, and being from Stanford should have it between the ears, only negatives I've read on him are he can be overly aggressive which can be coached out of him, if he was black balled for his brother's actions kudos to the front office for stopping that madness and reaping the rewards of every other team's stupidity.

He shouldn't/wont be punished for the sins of his brother in the Texans org. The reason he fell is there were some very good S prospects this yr and GM's didn't want to take a chance that he would act like his brother. You may disagree with me, but that's the only reason I can think of that this guy fell to the 3rd rd. I had him as my #3 Safety prospect. James/Bates/Reid.

I had Fitpatrick/James/Reid but agree with you. Certainly above Edmunds either way!

Teams can have very strange rationalizations for dropping a player on their board.

I still think it's pretty cut & dried. Unless you think Rosen is going to produce something close to 21 TDs in his first 7 games.

He can't?

And that's not the only measure of success, no?

And Deshaun's career isn't defined entirely yet is it?

And Josh Rosen in particular wasn't the point anyway.
