Patriots trade Brandin Cooks to Rams for 1st rounder

The Los Angeles Rams have acquired receiver Brandin Cooks and a fourth-round pick in a trade with the New England Patriots, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported. The Rams are sending their first-round pick in the upcoming draft (No. 23 selection) and a sixth-round pick to the Patriots, Garafolo added.

Cooks lands on his second new team in as many years, being dealt from the organization that acquired him via trade last offseason. The speedster who was sorely missed in the latter stages of Super Bowl LII leaves New England after posting a 65-catch, 1,082-yard season that also included seven touchdowns.

Cooks has one year left on his contract. Who trades a 1st round pick for a guy on an expiring contract? Crazy.
 
Might be a wink and nod deal where the extension is pretty much worked out. Otherwise, you are correct, it would be dumb. Rams sure seem to be in a win now mode.
 
And the Pats are getting picks to get back what they lost in FA. I think they have 4 picks in the first two rounds.

Supposedly there have been no talks. And Cook turned down a long term deal from the Pats last season saying he wanted to test the market.

The Rams have Cook, Suh & Donald up for contracts next year, and Butler the year after.

Some might think the Rams are on market winning flash over smart.

The Rams will have a projected 81M in cap space for 2019 according to Spotrac. That would currently give them the second best cap situation next year. These new players will have to produce this season to keep their bargaining chips on their side of the table...good for the Rams.

The Rams should have no problem getting most of these guys re-signed but the wildcard will be Suh's contract. It could simply come down to the type of season he would have playing next Donald and how much money he could live with if the Rams have a very solid season. For Suh, it could come down to money or playing for a ring....and the Rams are putting things together for a strong push towards that ring.

But Draft picks are so valuable, especially first round picks, lifeblood of an NFL organization. So like others I've wondered what Clowney might fetch in a trade but after seeing this I'm very confidant the Texans could score a first round pic for him. Not saying they will trade him or even try, just speculating bout his market value.
Generally speaking a stud edge-rusher is more valuable than a stud WR.
Both guys 25 going into the '18 season, to the right team Clowney should be atleast as valuable as this guy is to the Rams.

Almost $20 mil of that flies out the window to exercise 5th year options on Peters & Gurley. Suh isn't on there either and keeping him will be another $14+ mil. So not quite as easy as you make out.
 
Birth of a Rams dynasty?? Got Goff, Donaldson picked up Suh now get Cook Talib it's pretty clear the Rams are looking to take over while
New England declines till the next rising, thankfully Dallas does not have to play them saves me the headache of the beating they would
impose upon Dallas

My post mentioned Suh would be the wildcard in trying to retain.
 
According to the NFL channel, it seems the Rams are working on a multie year deal with Cooks. I figured they wouldn't trade a first for a one year rental. Seems the dollars were too high for the Pats and that's why they let him go. Its also a bit strange that Brady isn't too broke up that he is leaving. Seems they didn't really click.

Economics: It was hard to find someone in the Patriots’ organization over the past year who didn’t appreciate all that the 24-year-old Cooks brought to the team.
