NFL owners reportedly threaten to punish Jerry Jones over Goodell lawsuit

EvenCowboysowner Jerry Jones' power has limits. Six owners on the compensation committee, following a Monday conference call, have given Jones a cease-and-desist warning less than two weeks afterJones reportedly threatened to suethe league and the owners on the committee, reports theNew York Times' Ken Belson.

The range of punishments includes fines, docking draft picks and even suspending Jones, who has owned the Cowboys since 1989.

The impetus for all this? Jones is at odds with commissioner Roger Goodell, the man behindEzekiel Elliott'ssix-game suspension, and Jones is reportedly trying to keep Goodell's contract extension from going through. Jones, who was a non-voting member of the compensation committee, was kicked out immediately after he threatened to sue, reports Belson.

Meanwhile, Falconsowner Arthur Blank, the compensation committee's chairman, issued a statement on Monday.

"The committee is continuing its work towards finalizing a contract extension with the commissioner," Blanks said. "The negotiations are progressing and we will keep ownership apprised of the negotiations as they move forward. We do not intend to publicly comment on our discussions."

This latest development aligns with what CBS SportsNFLInsider Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday: Some owners are starting to turn on Jones because, according to sources, "his attacks on commissioner Roger Goodell are being seen by his peers as a direct reaction to his anger of Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension and are diminishing his respect and influence among other owners."

In addition to the cease-and-desist warning, some owners are reportedly discussing the nuclear option -- the long-shot possibility of making Jones forfeit his ownership in the Cowboys. Another possible deterrent to Jones moving forward with a lawsuit: If he loses, NFL bylaws contains a resolutionthat would make him responsible for legal fees, litigation expenses, and costs incurred by the league and by its teams. According toPro Football Talk's Mike Florio, that could cost Jones more than $10 million.https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...n-to-punish-jerry-jones-over-goodell-lawsuit/

Ego is a bitch.

Jerry Jones can suck it. He was all about defending the commish during the Brady suspension. His quotes from two years ago are hilarious to read after seeing how he's acting right now.

Old man billionaire used to getting his way is all I see.

Hey kid, watch that "old man" reference. Lol

lol I passed 'kid' long ago, but I just call it like I see it. :fingergun:
Yes, but Jerry and I were in school at the same time, so if he's an old man then it's time for me to bring out a cane. :) In an effort to stay on topic, Jerry probably felt betrayed, and no one can argue him putting too much trust in ones word.

He can feel betrayed, but it's a product of his own hubris. He was nothing but a Goodell apologist and butt-kisser during the Patriots deflated ball fiasco, but now the shoe is on the other foot and he's squealing like a stuck pig.

The commissioner's power comes from the owners, and he's there so they don't have to face the heat. That's why they pay him $40 million+ annually. Jerrah can focus his wrath on Goodell, but the truth is he's pissed off the other owners with his antics. He's not as powerful, or as popular, as he apparently thought.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out there has been JJ & Donald coordination. Very odd for JJ to come out this week in support of Donald's involvement. Even if you agree, as an owner that makes zero sense.

Yup. Goodell works as a shield for folks like Steelbtexan. Goodell just like Tagliabue doesn't make the rules. He didn't unilaterally sign off on Thursday football or international games. Every time folks beotch about Godell making it into flag football etc. his salary is proven worthwhile.

Jones might be angling for a spot in Trumps administration as a cabinet member, maybe secretary of Interior, Commerce, or Energy. As we know the shelf life of Trumps cabinet members is often brief so there may very well be an opening in one of those spots soon.

Not that you'll pay attention but as opposed to your story telling, so are other sports like Nascar which waves the flag as vigorously as possible.

And the NFL is still King.

And falling.

Jones sees how the NFL is trending and is trying to fix the issues. Jerrah is and always has been about the $$$$. I would argue that Jerrah has done more to make the NFL $$$$ than God'ell or any of the other owners. He's the owner who came up with the idea of PSL's/Doing naming rights deals etc....

I'm sure Jones is your current Don Quixote.

PSLs & naming rights make that owner money, not the NFL. For anything that actually benefitted the NFL in your new found Jones man crush playbook?

FYI you might want to ask Anheiser Busch and Busch Stadium how they stole the idea from Jerry when he was 11.

FYI#2 in 1969 when Texas Stadium was built, they had them, Texas Bonds which allowed the owner to buy season tickets.

But swing away for #3.

Good article on decline of NFL which probably could be used for any major sport. In summary - cord cutting and and short attention spans are plaguing the NFL. Why sit through watching an entire game when you catch the highlights and see what’s happening on an app?

Here's a good article for you:

Mark Cuban is wrong: Here's why the NFL will be alive and well in 2024

Excerpt:

As an Atlantic piece pointed out this fall, it's not just the NFL. Ratings are down for everything except cable news.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just remember: NFL owners have the advantage of the weakest union in pro sports, meaning the lowest player salaries and no long-term guaranteed contracts. College football provides a ready-made supply of talent that far exceeds what the NBA or NHL or Major League Baseball receives. College football has never been more popular, either, meaning the talent stream will run unabated.

This Goodell extension should serve as solid proof that he represents the interests of the owners and they like him being the attack dog and front man so they can continue to hide from public scorn and scrutiny.

You don't pay a man $40 million+ for poor job performance. He's got to be among the highest paid corporate executives out there.

Yep, just found it:

Only 10 CEOs in the S&P 500 made more than $40 million in total compensation in 2016, per available data from the AFL-CIO. Goodell’s potential annual paycheck would be higher than IBM’s Ginni Rometty, who oversees a company with an enterprise value of $177 billion and revenue of $78 billion, AT&T’s Randall Stephenson (EV: $338 billion, revenue: $161 billion) and nearly every other head of a big company.

Shazier has not been reported to have significant improvement of his neurologic status. He has undergone a surgery that has not been identified, but is likely a spinal fusion. A fracture or fractures of the vertebral bones and/or disc rupture has evidently occurred. Stabilization would prevent further damage to the spinal cord. With no good news within the 48 hour period post trauma, return of neurological function becomes tenuous and unpredictable.........and not a good sign.

Maybe. I heard a stat yesterday that NFL revenue has tripled since Goodell became commish in 2006. He's also doing the owners' dirty work of enforcing changes they want to implement, as well as being the face of dishing out punishment.

I'm not sure about college ball. They have their fair share of problems with corruption scandals, as well as ADs and boosters of various colleges running their little rings of power. Finally having a playoff system helps, though.

I personally like pro better for the simple fact that the players are just better as they develop and mature into grown men. I don't have a college affiliation and have never quite understood the cult-like devotion to schools, but that's just me.

To each their own.

I like watching college ball better because of the atmosphere. You should go to Baton Rouge that's like a playoff game crowd every week. I also like watching to see how 18 yr old kids develop as players and how they may develop into NFL players and how they might fit on the Texans or other teams.

Example I've watched Rosen/Darnold, I think Rosen is better but both are going to be great players. Are the Browns going to take a chance on Rosen although he's had shoulder problems are or they going to go the safe route and pick Darnold. Then you've got a guy like Mayfield, is he going to be Brees or Manziel? My bet is on Brees.

Rosen is good, but he is a flaming diva. If he comes to the Browns with his attitude and is not perfect at the get go, the fans and media will tear him apart.

Fair enough, I like my QB's playing with an edge, (See Brady last weekend) it's also why I think Mayfield is going to be good. (Chip on shoulder)

College atmosphere is cool. I'm not trying to disrespect anything from the college game experience, and I understand why folks love it.

But, there is simply no denying that the product on the field - i.e. the athleticism of the players, the unbelievable catches, the elite QB play, etc. - is better when these college kids become grown men and devote themselves full time to being football players.

And college blowout games bore the crap out of me. I don't have a college team, so watching random powerhouse team beat up on some random nobody team just bores me to tears (for instance, the Clemson vs. Citadel game - 61-3).

I do watch college games when they mean something, like the national championship game.

It's just entertainment, so my thoughts only pertain to my own enjoyment of the games.

Back to Goodell, he is about to really be tested as a commissioner over the next few years. Attendance is down, viewership is down, players are increasing disgruntled, another CBA fight is on the horizon, and the tv network contracts will be in the not-to-distant future, too. We will see if the owners placed their confidence in the right guy at that point.

Despite Jerry Goodell just got a new contract.

And the NFL just got $500 mil per year from Verizon to stream games.

The owners (and Verizon) clearly do not agree with the naysayers.

Yep. And Jerry was singing praises for Goodell just months before the Ezekiel Elliott ruling. We know what's up there. So transparent of Jerry.

I heard the $40 million/year thing is overblown. Goodell has a base of $4 million and can get up to $40 million through incentives and milestones.

There is no doubt in my mind that the owners love them some Goodell. Otherwise, we'd see a push to get someone like Condoleezza Rice as commish.

The public feud between Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell could soon take another turn.

The New York Times reported Monday that Goodell plans to "demand millions of dollars" from Jones and to label his actions last year as detrimental to the NFL.

The root of the discipline was Jones’ challenging of Goodell’s contract extension and public opposition to the six-game suspension for Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Who knows if it's Goodell, the owners, or both who want more of ole Jerrys azz ?

I lost respect for the NFL when it started to let refs decide outcomes of games. They had an agenda and they crushed fair play making even Texans games unwatchable.

No wonder football junkies are gravitating to other sports or quitting all together.

What legal fees has the NFL had?

Jerrah didn't file a lawsuit, so there shouldn't be a need for legal fees reimbursement.

Elliott's lawyers filed suits against the NFL/God'ell not Jerrah, so Jerrah isn't responsible for the legal costs of the NFL.

This is God'ell and Blank trying to exact a pound of flesh for Jerrah daring to oppose an extension for God'ell.

The NFL is losing interest because of crap like this. (Deflategate/Rice/Bountygate/Punishing Jerrah for going over the cap in an uncapped yr. (I still dont understand how this could happen.) And now this.

John Mara/Godell are ruining the NFL.

https://sports.yahoo.com/jerry-jones-won-fight-NFL-commish-Roger-Goodell-045522023.html

“Jerry, do I look like I take it personally?” Goodell asked a grinning Jones “No. That’s the answer to that question.”

Extension and money? Yes, end of the road for Gilligan at the end of that 5 years? Yes, see Jerruh got what he wanted which was
Goodell to step down after the fact, Jones wasn't about to fight the other owners on the contract, But he was going to ensure that
he got compensated for the Ezekial Elliot fiasco that put his star on the shelf for 6 games for NO reason at all

breaking it all down what does it mean?

Well, the big thing is? That once Gilligan is out the door and a new commissioner is "appointed" the safety measure of owners doing the decision
making on player discipline goes into effect! NO longer will players be suspended based on an accusation regarding the cases vs Ben Rothlisberger or
Adrian Peterson/Zeke where nothing is actually psychically "proven" that leads to arrest/prosecution

this also allows actual law enforcement to do their "Job" in conjunction with the prosecutor's office who will determine "if" the evidence warrants them
to intervein in the matter? Lastly, It NO longer shields "players" or coaches in a private status, Bad decisions off the field will lead to an arrest, possible
jail plus loss of job status as it did with Aaron Hernandez and Ray Carruth

The same as it would be for you, me, Or? anyone else facing that situation now this isn't dismissing behavioral issues on the field cheap shots or other
idiotic things. That land a player in hot water, once again the same it would land any of us in hot water when something is wrong on the actual work
site/place

bottom line

The NFL is corrupt with power Gilligan spearheads that charge fat is getting trimmed Gilligan is out good riddance to a bad commissioner

This is what Jerrah gets for having his head so far up Goodell's butt that he couldn't see the ground.

Roger "Gotta' Protect the Shield!" Goodell could not give a rat's ass about Jerrah after his contract extension. He's rich, biatch!

And I'd imagine Robert Kraft is laughing his ass off about right now.

The NFL does not have "lawyers" working pro bono they are getting paid for arbitration cases along with any appeals or motions that need to get filed in higher level courts the kick is? That it's factored in, so what is this really all about?

Corruption of power mixed with arrogance my boy! at the end of the day, the NFL is not going to be made a fool of by one of its own! IF Jones had left it alone, None of this happens. Kraft hung Brady out to dry over deflate-gate, Rooney hung Rothlisberger out to dry when he was accused of rape which
never happened. Ziggler hung Peterson out to dry when AP was accused of child abuse, Modell hung Rice out to dry when he struck his g/f in the hotel
elevator even after it was clear she was the aggressor at that point, Mara hung Josh Brown out to dry when it was discovered that Brown was beating his wife

the difference here is? Nobody saw Zeke place his hands on her, police and prosecutors failed to buy her story, which is why Zeke was never charged
in any of the matters. it's all a matter of he said/she said, and the owners like Gilligan ignored the recommendations to not act and wanted something to be done? So, they got what they wanted, Zeke took his 6 games despite my protests, They thwarted Jones retaliation by threatening expulsion IF
Jones insisted to continue with his pursuit against Gilligan

Sounds like the bumbling incompetence of the OJ trial that saw a man being wrongly accused of 2 counts of felony murder, found not guilty then is
made to pay restitution for something he never did

it is this sort of idiocy that makes people question and not trusts that the system is doing right by its code of ethics, That things can go any way they
want all in the name of greed, This is why people have lost interest in the NFL, stopped attending games just look at how they handled the anthem
protests? (further proof)

I for one cannot wait till it all comes crashing down around them, the sooner the better I say! these clowns got to learn that playing with fire only gets
you burned, so burn baby burn
