2018 coaching carousel

Pat Shurmur is a very interesting candidate to me. First he's with McNabb as the quarterbacks coach. Then improves the last place Rams' offense. (I can't hold being with the Browns against anyone). Back to the Eagles putting Foles on the map. And most recently winning with Keenum, and helping to put together an offensive line for the Vikings (experience as offensive line as well as tightends coach).

Cardinals request to talk to Mike Munchak.

Vance Joseph stays Denver HC. Didn't think they'd fire him after one year.

Jim Harbaugh declares himself out for this year.

Dallas Cowboys [9-7: retaining HC Jason Garrett]

I wouldn't go believing all the spew you hear regarding Garrett, the truth is? Players along with fans are fed up with the lack of abilities Garrett brings to the team. Jerruh, has said that his position is safe? but the reality is, Garrett is very much on the chopping block in 2018, after this pitiful season

Amazing he stuck around as long as he did, Dom's had a ton of talent to work with and couldn't get them to the next level.
He won a Super Bowl early on as the Packers DC.
That will give you a lot of leeway and job security.
If not for the Super Bowl he'd have been gone a lot sooner.

Amazing, I wanted Capers as DC for the Cowboys before they decided on Marinelli personally if that was my choice? Dom is the man for the job but
the clown in charge didn't get the job done. Makes me wonder if Dallas would have interest in him now that his time with the Pack is over?

Patricia is favored in Detroit supposedly. Rumors of course.

Does McDaniels stay or go to Colts or Arizona?

So Patricia to Giants, Nagy to the Bears, rumor is Shurmur to Cardinals.

I wonder if McDaniels is staying in New England and wait out Belichicks eventual retirement or if he is going to the Colts - maybe even Titans if that opens up.

I am thinking the Colts since surprisingly New England made traded Brisset there.

took this from another thread on the giants

Most likely, sometime next week it'll be clear that Patricia is the Giants' guy, and if not, they'll end up with McDaniels or Shurmur. It is hard to see the Giants losing out on all three. But if they did, it would be a huge hit to their image, which is already of a dysfunctional franchise in disarray. They'd look clueless as they scrambled around for coach everyone would know would be at least their fourth choice.

so maybe locking onto your guy isn't as dysfunctional as this??

I'm 98% certain that Belichick does't lose coaches, he purges. That is Craft's contribution to the team ... reaching out to media and other owners telling them how great Vrabel and Patricia coaching two of the worst defenses are ideal candidates for HC jobs. He sells owners like McNair that O'Brien and Josh McDaniels are key reasons for how great that offense is. These coaches learned so much about how to build and run a team, the Patriots would barely survive without them ... except he actually means it this time with McDaniels. Do it the Patriot way - hire our fractionally informed underlings so that we don't have to worry about you for a while.

Thank goodness our entire 2018 season hinges on a near-rookie injured quarterback and 3 (2 injured) defensive linemen. Our Patriot's coaches (and his gm) have got this .... right?

The Pats defense was pretty good the last 10 weeks. Which makes sense since they added so many new pieces this offseason. I like both Patricia (A rocket scientist) and McDaniels (If he grew up and learned form his mistakes in Denver) They're different from most of the past Pats that got HC jobs. Brilliant people, but that doesn't assure success. I really like Patricia and think he's really going to be good with the Lions. They already have most of the pieces in place.

In 13+ years there hasn't been a successful Belichick assistant, but surely Patricia with the Lions is the one. And there's at least a decent chance that McDaniels lasts more than 2 years this time as he destroys a roster in familiar fashion.

Sounds like McDaniels has been given assurances of becoming Pats HC whenever Belichick leaves. Or, he finally met Jim Irsay. Either make sense.

That's my biggest issue in all this. McDaniels doesn't just screw the Colts here, he screws those assistants, and he screws the incoming coach since the Colts are doing the honorable thing and offering them contracts anyway.
He also screwed himself if the Pats job doesn't come through. No one forgets this.

Dan Graziano of ESPN.com has reported that McDaniel's agent Bob Lamonte has severed his relationship with McDaniels over the Colts fiasco.

Frank Reich agrees to become next Colts head coach

One of the guiding forces behind the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl victory will be the next head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich agreed to a five-year deal Sunday to become the Colts' head coach, a source informed of the talks between the sides told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Indy's decision wraps up a whirlwind coaching search for the Colts after New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels withdrew from an announced agreement to become the team's head coach on Tuesday.

And a brand new reason to enjoy beating the Colts!

Reich is probably a better hire. Whatever advantage McDaniels may have in X&Os, he gives up in leadership.

I’d have taken Reich too over McD

I agree, but I think that's also because McDaniels has failed as a HC before. We don't really know what he's going to be like next time. Reich is a first time HC.

I also agree that Reich is a much more exciting reason to hate the Colts all over again.
