Of course there is some "wishful thinking" on my part! But this whole MB is full of "wishful thinking!" Isn't it wishful thinking to think the Texans will get all these O-linemen in FA that everybody thinks they should get and then draft every O-lineman everybody thinks they should draft and then plug them in and they solve all your problems with the O-line? Right now no one knows who will be available in FA and who the Texans will go after, or even if the player will choose the Texans over other offers. And, right now no one knows who will be there for the Texans in the Draft and whether they decide to move up or stay put in the 3rd rd. We just don't know and won't until it happens.
But, here's what we do know:
1. Davenport is here already and under contract for awhile.
2. Davenport has a year of experience now under his belt.
3. Davenport now knows what it will take to play LT in the NFL and has said he will be making improvements in his strength and technique this off season to continue to play LT at an NFL level.
Now, the Texans (Gaine) could find somebody in FA to play LT and plug him in from day 1 and that would be great. But, with this weak FA OT class, I'm not sure they find anyone that will be that good unless they pay some ungodly amount to get him here, and then you've probably depleted funds you will need for other positions plus Clowney's mega contract. I see them going after a good OG and maybe an OT who is OK but not great in FA, and I think they will keep Clark as an insurance policy. A poor insurance policy I know, but an insurance policy none the less. I also think they will keep Allen since he played LT for a game before he got hurt.
As for the Draft, I don't know, at this time, who will be there for them in the 3rd rd or if they will have to try and move up to get someone like Crosby or O'Niell in the 2nd rd. But, even if they did I think whoever they get will probably be put in at RT and have to battle it out with Clark or a FA. I don't think they put an untried rookie in at LT when they already have Davenport who's at least had 2 full games at LT under his belt and played throughout the season. I could see putting a rookie in at LT if this was a great OT class and the Texans got a Joe Thomas type OT in the 1st rd but that ain't happening. There is no Joe Thomas in this Draft and the Texans don't have a 1st or 2nd rd pick even if there was a Joe Thomas in the Draft! Let's face it, it's a weak class for OT's. Yes, there are some good developmental players in there at OT like Senat, Parker, or Cappa. But they're in the same boat Davenport was in this time last year. They will have to be developed just like Davenport was and brought along slowly.
So, maybe my counting on Davenport to make the improvements in strength and technique this off season is just "wishful thinking" but I think it has a better chance of coming true than some of the other "wishful thinking" around here!
